Joan Florence Wechsler was born in Salt Lake City, Utah in 1897 as the only child of a mormon family. Through a mix of luck, raw ambition and way too much confidence, a tween kleptomaniac managed to cheat her way into the organised crime web of downtown New York by the time she reached 23.
If that sounds somewhat interesting to you feel free to read my borderline insane ramblings about her on the ever-growing Memento Mori Wiki ! But I'll do a teensy dump of information on here for my oomfs who want to show they care but don't want to waste that much time.
Author's note:
Midas, Joan, and John are all the same person. If I refer to her with one specific name over the other, it's more so to reflect how the characters in that specific context would have referred to her.
I've been unhealthily obsessed with this woman since February of 2024, wether or not this illness will leave me is a fate only god may know, but as of now its as strong as ever.
Joan was the textbook definition of a swindler, she fell in love with the idea of great financial reign and was willing to take any measure to achieve what she deemed to be success. Due to the constraints of her time, she took on the fake name "John Wagner" and carried out her professional and personal life crossdressing to fit the role. Though she lacked ability in quite literally any other field, "Midas"--a nickname that would eventually come about thanks to her singular gift--was an incredible salesman. She had unmatched attention to detail when it came to social interactions, a genuine love for all things money-related and enough conviction to put those things to work.
Another important note about her is that she was a total hedonist; drugs, women, alcohol, she adored indulging in a lifestyle that was never meant for her to have.
Scott Charles (on the left) was Midas' closest friend and the owner of her most frequently visited bar: "Scottie's Speakeasy". In contrast to his companion, Scott was an incredibly genuine individual, only ever resorting to selling contraband (alcohol) due to Midas herself convincing him to. Charles was born in London and migrated to New York around the late 1910's in search of new financial opportunities for himself, his pregnant wife Margaret and his firstborn Annie, only to eventually reep the consequences of involving himself with the protagonist. Personally, he's my favourite, but thats just me...
Louise Wagner was Joan's childhood friend turned lover; a kind, generous woman who fell victim to the one huge scheme that was her marriage to "John". Louise's father, Chuck, was a huge face in the organised crime scene at the time. And so where Louise might have seen a genuine opportunity to spend the rest of her life with a woman she'd unfortunately come to fall in love with, Joan only saw the potential millions that stood behind her.
