look at this boy right here. this boy. not this man. this young immature selfish teenager. look at him. think about it.
he had his issues before the reapers game and he knew it. he had it shoved in his face daily. he wasn't doing well in school. his younger sister had all of this ambition and talent and he had nothing. even when he tried he was always second best. he started to give up because every time he'd try, every time he would get even a little bit better he'd be shot down. never good enough. never.
he skateboarded. and yeah, sure, maybe he was decent at it, but even something he liked and he was never the best. he was never even close. if he left the world it was like no one would miss him. no one would remember to miss him. he started skipping school to be by himself because that was all who would ever want to be with him that he could handle; no one that would make him feel like shit with snarky comments or degrading lifestyles.
his parents flipped. obviously, it was given. but he had given up months ago and they just noticed then. he was pissed. who wouldn't be? he left. he was done. his sister went chasing after him. rhyme. she was always this target he couldn't reach. she was everything her parents wanted and everything he wasn't. he couldn't hate her though. how could he?
maybe he deserved to die in his mind, but there was no way rhyme did. but he killed her. he was stupid and immature like always and he took her down with him. he tried to save her but like he said, he can't stop a car. when he heard of that second chance, and he saw rhyme there he was overjoyed. he could bring her back. he had a chance. and he would do whatever it took.
but she didn't remember him. and to add onto that, that wasn't her value. no, he wasn't even a person worth a shit to his own sister. he was once again scum that was the butt of everyone's jokes, even to the people he called friends. he was a loose canon that was on the back of everyone's minds as someone who can't handle themselves. someone who has to be taken care of.
and then rhyme died saving him. he fucked up again at their final chance. her final chance. even if he wasn't what rhyme valued most, even if no one valued him he had more heart than anyone to try what was right for someone who wanted to live who needed to. and yet he still managed to fuck it all up while trying his best.
just like everything else.
by the second week he was sick of it all. hanekoma had saved him, but he didn't bother to know why. he didn't care. he wanted out in the most miserable way possible. he became what he hated the most. he became a reaper, the absolute definition of death and a constant reminder, just on that one hope that it would bring rhyme back. his life was no longer in the question. and he did all of this alone.
he found out how to get rhyme back. or at least, partially. he would work for centuries until he got her back. he was so close, then yet again, he'd have all of his mistakes thrown back in his face and he'd lose everything and be that one extra person and the only one who couldn't laugh. the game was meant to be lost and he knew it, and the reapers toyed with him; they wanted to remind him of everything he did wrong. every moment he had fucked up. all in a matter of seven days.
he made it through. he was stronger than he knew by far. he kept a straight face the whole time. no one knew. but he came back to the living, and with rhyme back too, but that was all a matter of time and place. any other game and they would not have ended that way. he got lucky. but rhyme lost her dreams permanently.
and it still wasn't good enough.
i love beat and i think he is probably the most underrated character in the whole game. sorry for long wall of text filled with emotion.
