Sorry to talk about Harry Potter again but when it comes to the slave race that Rowling put in her books, she said she based the house elves off of brownies. You know, those creatures in British folklore that clean your house for you because they like doing it and are offended if you try to pay them?
Why not just put brownies in your story then? Almost identical effect without all the slavery.
If you wanna make the Malfoys look worse just idk maybe they put a spell on Dobby to bind him to their house and he can’t leave unless the malfoys break the rules and they’re bad to him but don’t technically try to break the rules until Harry tricks them into paying dobby with some clothes.
There. Problem solved. You can have hundreds of brownies living at hogwarts even. And when Hermione misinterprets their situation and tries to thank them and start paying them the brownies start getting offended and leaving and this causes an actual problem for the school. Much easier to make a subplot about not listening to the people that you’re trying to help.
Just another way you realize as an adult that these books weren’t really thought through very well.
Be warned, this is not a well-structured thesis or anything, just some thoughts I have:
Throughout Worm it's evident how the labels "Hero" and "Villain" are used to signify support or opposition of the establishment more so than actual morality. Heroes use it as a thought-terminating cliche whenever a villain starts making too much sense -- "but you're a villain!" -- and ignore the many heroes who break the rules once they've already secured their place in the system. I mean, I love Defiant, but would he ever have gotten a chance to become Defiant if he'd done what he did as a villain? I have a strong feeling he'd be either dead or birdcaged.
I know there are lots of examples but the one that comes most to mind is Flechette's confrontation with Skitter and Parian - The entire Brockton warlords issue is emblematic of what I'm talking about here, honestly. Villains are providing for people where the system has failed. Heroes turn a blind eye to the matter for the time being, but the fact of the matter is still that the Villains are operating outside of The Institution and thus Order must be restored as soon as possible. Villains using force to police their territory is barbaric, if only we had Heroes to use force on behalf of the state!
This gets even more absurd in Ward, where the old establishments have functionally collapsed and heroes are split between a multitude of teams vying for jurisdiction. Financial feasibility of a team is a major concern now, collaboration between hero teams is spotty. But they still cling to the label "Hero". The one issue they unilaterally agree on is the continued practice of labelling people "Villains" to wield institutional power against them. Everyone gets amnesty, but it only takes one (independent) hero team to sound the alarm that you've gone back to your villainous ways and boom, you're a capital V Villain once again. You no longer have The Birdcage to worry about, but pack your bags and call Bear Grylls because Vicky just invented The Birdcage 2.
Hollow Point gets abandoned before we really get to explore this, but you KNOW that if it had stabilized more into a self-sufficient community the powers that be wouldn't have let it exist. It's been labelled a Villain Town and hero teams are going to keep provoking it until they can justify moving in to sweep it up.
