finally enough
Sylus x f!non-mc second in command part 2
snow didn't fell in N109 zone. she had always wondered why... she still remembered the day when sylus had pointed at the sky, while they both lay on the ground. telling her it was because of the wanderers and their polluted aura, how this land had become barren now.
'just like my heart' he had whispered absentmindedly.
that day, she had decided she would do her best to nurture both his heart and the legacy he was building and allowed her to be a part of.
that was the day when, for better or worse, she somehow decided that as long as onichynus and he flourish, it would be alright, even if the cost is breaking herself in pieces.
that was the day when she realized she had fell in love with the crimson eyes man.
that... was also the day she did the biggest mistake of her life. falling in love with someone who had destroyed entire planets to find the one - the girl that held the other part of his soul.
it had been ten long years since that day.
she had sustained countless injuries and bullet wounds, scars now littering her arms from the missions that pushed onychinus to the top.
she had spent countless nights discussing strategies with him, eating when they get tired and staying with him silently when his aether core acted up.
it had been ten years since she had started chipping away pieces of herself to build this- this all - onychinus, their reputation, him everything.
all of this... that he had build for that girl.
and frankly speaking, she didn't knew if she had anything else left to chip away now.
not without losing herself anyway.
not since the day he had showed her a mirror and the truth of her position beside behind him.
the files were heavy in her hand. she wasn't used to carry so many of them, let alone at once.
she put them on his desk with a careful motion, straightening up her hand unconsciously brushing against her right forearm with a wince.
what a funny thing. of course, that wound had to be poisoned.
she let herself look at his office one more time, a long glance like she was trying to memorise a place, she once thought meant more than it was credited for.
"aren't these more than usual?"
his voice made her shoulder tense before she forced them to relax and sighed. she was really hoping to get all this done before he came... then again, she had never been able to detect his presence.
no-no do not think about him. anything about him.
"these are all the reports for the past three months' mission," she saw his gloved hands brush against one of the files, his crimson eyes furrowed as he glanced over the titles. "and all the notes, plans and strategies for the next three months of missions, sir. i have sent you all the corresponding emails too."
she didn't need to look away from the window to see the question in his eyes.
"i thought," her voice was soft and quieter than she realized. "i should do all this before leaving."
her words left a loud silence in their wake.
before it was broken by his soft whisper. "leaving...?"
"yeah, that's why i would appreciate if you can check the topmost file first," her blue gaze met his crimson one, and for the first time in ten years they held something breaking instead of admiration. "its my... resign, if you will. the end of our... partnership."
something seemed to break in his gaze too, as he took a step forward his hand half raised as if to hold her. "you can't-"
his hand had barely brushed agaisnt her wrist when she felt herself step back. oh, how she would have waited for this moment a few months ago? for him to hold her.
not now though.
"i can, sylus," she spoke, tugging her jacket over her wrist. "when we formed this partnership, it was a mutual understanding that we both can leave whenever we want... i am choosing to leave now."
the faint creak of his leather gloves when he clenched his fist was the only sound she could hear in the room.
his jaw clenched as he looked out of the window. "why?"
for a second, something passed through her eyes before she sighed shaking her head. so he havent even noticed the sign and let alone how he treated her.
"that is exactly why," his gaze turn toward her but she didnt looked at him, staring at his desk instead for a moment before she met his eyes, a small smile - that was too broken in place- on her lips. "dont worry. you made me realise my place was behind you, i am just going... behind that you won't feel my presence anymore. no need, right? you can just look forward and keep moving."
his lips had moved. maybe he would have said something but she had stepped out before he could.
closing the door behind her.
and yet, even then, she had allowed herself to hesistate and lean agaisnt that door for a few minutes more than necessary.
something in her still waiting- something pathetic and desperate still wanting him to atleast see it now and ask her to not go. to stay.
he didn't.
she wondered why she thought he ever would. and so with a discrete wipe of her eyes she had stepped out of the zone and legacy she had built with her hands. stepping out of a place that never faced snow and yet had taken all warmth from her.
and somewhere, inside the tall headquarers of onichynus, a man who had destroyed galaxies and planets alike with his hands, sat in his chair staring at the file in his hand and wondering why it felt wrong to let a woman who wasnt supposed to mean anything leave.
6 months later
sylus couldn't understand it.
when had it started going so wrong. from which point of time exactly?
onichynus was still running. N109 zone was still standing tall... and yet there was a undercurrent of tension that was never here before.
missions had started failing in small ways - not outright collapsing but needing reinforcement and changes more than they did once. negotiations and deals pile up more and more that lead him to wonder if there was always so much work here.
everything was still working, yeah. but it was not... efficient. nobody anticipated problems like she used to do.
nobody was here to share his workload just because they want to.
everything was good... just not as good as when she was here.
he could hear them now. the whispers when he would walk pass departments without information. people mentioning how this would have been easier if she was here, how now everyday there was a tension coiled in everyone.
"you built this place, boss man, yeah" kieran had once said after the twins had returned from one another mission, a bit wounded.
luke who was patching kieran's hand had not looked up when he had continued. "but she held it together and made it... easier for everyone else."
"without her, everything feel so off." kieran had mumbled looking down at his hands.
right, she was here when he took them under his care.
he had forgotten she was like a elder sister to them... he had forgotten once upon a time she used to be his best friend too. his first confidant he could trust with his life. the first person he would kill someone if they disrespected her.
when had he exactly forgotten it?
was it when he finally found her? the passionate girl from the hunter association who made his heart beat faster than it ever did, when he finally saw the woman he was looking years for, when his hands finally touched the other half of his soul?
but then when he had forgotten the woman who used to patch up him before he even met the other half of his soul? the woman who gave peace to the soul he did have?
when did he started thinking of her as just a coworker and his second in command?
when did her place become behind him
no. no... no.
he couldnt think like this. she had disrespected the hunter who gave his soul meaning that day... thats why he had snapped. thats why he had said all that.
since how much time he had been doing that?
in these six months, there were few workers who had resigned too, the one's who were talented in their fields. even though he never asked them outright, he knew it was to work with her instead.
everything felt fine and yet it felt like there were small pieces of onychinus that chipped away everyday.
... it all felt heavy in his head. and so he started spending as many mornings he could, in linkon, waking up beside the woman whose eyes shone brighter than anything.
she was everything. she reassured him, comforted him, even made food even when she had to watch reciepies for hours for them.
she was his world, his life, his love and yet... even being with her didnt erased the space that had been carved into his life for the last six months.
something was missing.
not love... no. it was something else. it was the one person who stood beside him when he had nothing. who still cared for him when he was nothing in this world.
it was the ever present presence of the person who always had his back. who allowed him to indulge in peace when she worked.
and that was one role, one, that not even his soulmate could complete.
could anybody ever complete that role except her? it had been such a night. when after yet another difficult mission he was in linkon, choosing to walk in the light drizzle of rain as he navigated to go to her house.
it was then... that he saw her.
there she was, outside a restaurant that glowed gold even in night, streetlight catching on her black hair as she brushed them back absentmindedly. she was wearing a red dress that ended on her knees alongside a black fur coat. her teeth nibbled on her lip as she looked at her phone and then at the watch on her hand.
she looked... light.
he realised that in hindsight.
she looked unarmed, bright, like she was regaining colour he didnt realised she had lost.
despite himself, he had felt himself raising his hand, his lips moving to call out. atleast meet once, maybe... talk.
but they stopeed when he registered the presence behind her.
he watched as she blinked softly when a bouquet of white lilies were presented in front of her, her fingers softly brushing agaisnt them before turning around to see the man who had forwarded them, a soft small smile already on her lips.
the man with black hair pushed up his glasses as he presented them to her. he was wearing a fitted black shirt and pants alongside a coat. sylus glanced at the bag in his hands to see a stethoscope peeking out from where it was left unzipped.
a doctor.
sylus had watched his hand dropping back to his side when she looked at the flowers, before looking back at the doctor, someting hesistant in her eyes as she pointed at her.
he had nodded firmly.
she had taken those flowers softly like waiting for something soft to disappear. and when she looked down on them something in her expression broke.
not loudly. but it was enough to notice.
how her eyes teared up just a bit, lips pressing more tightly. as if she didnt thought she could ever have something so... thoughtful.
it looked like the man with her noticed that too. he said something sylus couldnt hear as he softly brushed a kiss to her forehead.
he had watched her duck her dace, cheeks red as they both entered the restaurant. her eyes wide and bright as she listened to him.
sylus looked away, something misty in his gaze, as he shoved his hands in his pockets and walked away. the drizzle turning cold as it poured.
it wasnt until he reached his hunter girl's home and layed down when she took a bath that he allowed himself to dig a bit.
she was... a jewellary dealer now. a legal business, though no doubt still acquired by her connections in jewel smuggling. she had started a small, luxury business that had turned reputable quickly.
that man, he recognised him now, from one of the photo on the bedside. he was zayne, the doctor at akso hospital who mc knew. she must have met him during a treatment.
... what a weird thing, he thought, to want her presence when she had already walked away.
all due to him. due to his carelessness. due to his cruelty. all because he had taken her for granted.
and now he had no one he could trust just the same.
that night snow fell in linkon, covering the streets in a white blanket. and somewhere in a restaurant, the same woman who once bleed for a man who didnt looked back was sitting with a man whose hand though cold still contained more warmth than sylus gave her, a man who had told her he would wait.
snow hadnt felt that lighter in her life.
