On Tagging

So there was quite the Discourse the other day about shipping Batfam members and tagging. The long and short of it is that there are people who don’t want to see any Batfam shipping at all, which is fair enough. People shouldn’t be made to see content they don’t want to.

Someone requested that we tag all Batfam shipping as incest. I see why, since it’s a tag that can be used across fandoms to catch a lot of things, but I feel that since the bat family is the way it is, that’s a bit too narrow for what’s needed.

I know I, for one, will only read BruJay or BruDick in AUs where they are explicitly not related. Having all BruJay and BruDick content tagged as incest makes it hard for me and people like me to sort out content that I don’t want to see, and I imagine it’s like that across the board.

So I’d like to make a request for my fellow Batfam shippers: From now on, we tag Batfam ships as batcest. This makes it easy for people who don’t want to see Batfam shipping avoid it while also allowing those of us who do like it to avoid depictions of explicit incest.

The ships included are any that involve two or more of the following characters in a romantic and/or sexual relationship together: Alfred, Bruce, Kate, Dick, Jason, Tim, Cass, Damian, and Duke. This would include threesomes and moresomes such as JayRoyDick, for example.

 Steph and Babs are not Bruce’s children, so I don’t think they count, especially considering the canon DickBabs and TimSteph. If popular consensus is different, we can add them in too. 

It’s been pointed out that people can just block each ship individually, but there are so many permutations to be done with the pairings that it’s nigh on impossible. I think someone counted them all and there’s roughly 90 tags just for the Bats together, not to mention possible threesome and moresome inclusions. It’s impossible to get them all individually.

Being asked to tag isn’t censorship, it’s common courtesy.

I’m tagging batfam so this gets to the most people possible, sorry in advance if this will be a problem for you.

tl;dr: Batfam shippers should start tagging things as batcest so gen fans don’t have to see content they don’t like and to make it easier for everyone to manage their fandom experience.

If I remembered the formula right, there are 720 combinations just for the ‘core’ Batfam of Bruce, Dick, Jason, Tim, Cass and Damian when we count threesomes, foursomes, etc. This number increases exponentially to forty thousand if we add Alfred and Duke. It is impossible to block them all, and that’s not counting polyam ships with members outside the family, or Kate, because when I did this math I forgot about genderbends. 

Now, obviously not all of these are being used - there probably won’t be a need to block, for instance, Alfred/Cassandra/Damian, unless I just jinxed it - but the point still stands. Ao3 has a wonderful tagging system, but trying to block 700 tags, not to mention whatever tropes you dislike would be beyond even their capabilities. Now imagine having to exclude these tags every single time you go into the Batman tags.

I am curious as to how we should tag vees where two ends of the vee are related, though. If, taking your example of Jason/Roy/Dick, Dick and Jason are both dating Roy but not each other and only one of them is involved in any given smut scene, would that go under batcest? What if Roy is dating Jason and Kori and Kori is dating Dick, who isn’t dating anyone else? That’s not to say that it’s a bad idea - I’m just thinking about the details.

Devin Grayson, 18 years ago:  Well, I’m not sure I believe in the concept of soulmate anyways. But if I were going to say there were soulmates, I’d say it was Bruce and Dick. Soulmates are people who need each other to be complete in who they are. Are Dick and Babs a good romantic match? Yeah, in a lot of ways. They’ve got a lot of stuff to work out.
