Time to figure out what to do with our 3 egg-migos!
We got our phone call on Saturday to tell us that of our 4 mature follicles, 3 had fertilised! And of those 3, two were really good quality, and one was good quality.
So we had an anxious wait until today, when we were back in the clinic to see if they had continued to develop, and they had!
Two of the embryos scored the best quality they could on the 3 categories they assess them on. And the other one wasn’t quite as good, but was still good enough that they were happy to use it in future. That means we had one to transfer, and two to freeze, which is so amazing given PCOS eggs are often worse quality!
We went ahead with embryo transfer this afternoon as planned, so now we just have to wait 9 days until we can test! Trying to not get our hopes up, and to remain as stress free as possible for the next week or so.
Here’s our little blastocyst before transfer. We’re calling it our ‘maybe baby’ :)
Egg Collection
I had my egg collection yesterday!
We got our hopes up quite a bit after as they told us they had managed to get 25 follicles. We obviously knew they might not all contain eggs, but that was way more than we were expecting. At one point last week, there was maximum 3 follicles to be collected.
So from the 25, they managed to get 6 eggs. We spoke to the clinic today, and of those 6 eggs, 4 of them were mature enough to use. And of the 4 they could use, 3 of them have fertilised over night.
Now we have to wait for a call on Saturday to see if any of them have made it to day 3, and if they’re good quality, one will be transferred to my wife on Monday. Obviously in an ideal world, all 3 will be good enough quality, so we can freeze them for another round. But all we need is 1!

I hate when fertility clinics do that to the big follicle. Statistically the biggest one has the best egg and making it “burn out” just to HOPE to get some smaller ones risks ALL of them. The prolonged exposure to the high level of hormones can damage them all. I would’ve insisted on switching it to an IUI cycle.
I have wondered myself about the prolonged exposure and the impact on the follicles- I’d be interested to read any information you have on that, as I haven’t had a chance to look into any research about it.
In the defence of the clinic, they gave us a multitude of options. We opted to go for this one, so it’s not like we were forced into the decision. Our other options involved losing every follicle, so at least this way there is a possibility of still salvaging something from the cycle.
And re switching to IUI, that wouldn’t work in our situation as I am acting as an egg donor for my wife. So couldn’t switch to IUI for me, as I’m not trying to get pregnant. And she isn’t set up to switch to IUI either, as she’s being treat as a recipient.
Stuck In Limbo
This morning’s scan had both disappointing and promising news! The amount of growth we needed to collect on Friday, as planned, hasn’t happened.
My biggest follicle has grown 4mm in 2 days, so is now at 20mm, but all the rest are trailing behind. There were only 2 follicles today that were the right size, and the clinic won’t collect until there is 3.
But, because some other follicles have grown a little bit since Monday and are now in the 10-12mm range, they want to keep me on the medications for another few days to see if we can bring the little ones up to the correct size. By doing so, we are almost guaranteed to lose the biggest one, but that’s a risk we need to take to have any hope of collecting during this cycle.
So that’s where we are at currently. Another two days wait until we find out if we can collect. Another £90 spent on medication (3rd time in a week). Another waiting game to play.
Had another scan this morning, and it’s been a pretty shit day as a result of it.
Basically they’ve said that there are currently only two follicles ready, and they won’t do a collection without three as the absolute minimum.
We have been given the option to wait and have another scan on Wednesday, to see if a third follicle has matured (which is what we have opted for).
Or to start the cycle all over again.
Safe to say we both feel like shit. Even if a third follicle develops, that pretty much means maximum we are going to have 3 eggs. Which doesn’t exactly give us great odds for fertilisation and them being good quality.
Le sigh 😞

C'mon eggs!
So after the scan on Monday, I had another one on Wednesday, which didn't show very much growth. My left ovary has larger follicles than my right, which just seems to be dragging its' heels.
I wish that they did a trial cycle for my medications, like they did for my wife's. As you can get to this point, and pay all the money, to then find out that you don't respond to the medication for whatever reason. There is some growth, so hopefully that's not going to be the case for us. But I can imagine that's a very frustrating position to be in.
Went back on Friday, and one follicle (which we have christened Big Fat Follicle- BFF) is at 13.5mm, and they want them to be 14mm. So yay for BFF!
I've now started my second injection, which is to prevent me ovulating while the follicles continue to mature. And I am back there on Monday for another scan, so fingers crossed some other follicles have caught up. Basically, it's a game of odds, so the more follicles they can get, the better chance of having good quality ones to fertilise!
Meanwhile, my wife's womb is ready to go ha! So she's just waiting for me to play catch up basically.
The hope is that we are ready to do egg collection on Friday next week- 6 days from today- eek!
Scans for days!
Had a scan on Monday to see how my ovaries were responding to the injections and the results were pretty disappointing, as there didn’t seem to be much follicular growth. But the consultant said it can happen with being so early in the regime. So I am back at the clinic for another scan tomorrow, and if there’s still no change, they’re increasing my medication.
Then the wife is there on Friday to see how things are developing, with her lining etc.
It’s scary to think how many different stages there are where things can go wrong, or not work as they should. And even though we are less than 2 weeks away from the proposed collection & transfer dates, it still feels like there’s a lot needing to happen before then 😞
Latest update
I like when they sort so both my wife & I have our appointments on the same day, so we can go to the clinic together!
Both had scans today- for me, it was to check my ovaries, which all seemed fine- yay! For my wife, they were looking at her endometrium, to make sure it had thinned with the medication she’s on, and it had, so that was great.
She had bloods taken to check her oestrogen levels, as they were worried they might be a bit high, but we’ll hear back about that this afternoon. So at least it’s not too long to wait.
Assuming everything is fine with those results, I start my injections in the next couple of days for my ovarian stimulation.
Eek! It’s all getting very real 😬😬😬
