Reblog if you are a human rights extremist who believes that all humans are equal and has no sense of loyalty to nation states.
I do think the Hank Green AI thing makes it abundantly clear that if you have ADHD or any other mental illness and/or you are prone to addiction you need to avoid AI at all costs. This shit will rope you in, and if you have a mental illness that say, starves your brain of dopamine, you're gonna be extra susceptible to that. I won't use AI for a lot of reasons but one of the big ones is knowing how it would fuck with my ADHD and bipolar. Like yes, it's bad for the environment and giving money to rich scumbags and runs on plagarism, but even more than all that, it's straight up not safe at all and you really shouldn't use it if for no other reason than to protect yourself from whatever the fuck it might do to you.
Last year my 4-year relationship ended due to ChatGPT induced psychosis; my partner (who has ADHD) was convinced I was a CIA plant/also cheating after talking to ChatGPT basically non-stop. ChatGPT eventually convinced him that I was dangerous, as well as several of his close friends and family. I had to leave because it had progressed to the point where I was no longer physically safe in the house with him. (He is doing much better now and got medical help thanks to his parents).
ChatGPT is already a terrible tool because of its many inaccuracies and the fact that it's a language learning model and not a search engine or therapist. But it is such a big problem for lonely people, people with mental illnesses, neurodivergent people, and the young and elderly. So many people are carelessly put at risk and we need to have better safety protocols before it gets any worse
i feel like people think companies will be altruistic and do the right thing regardless of government intervention. like no, companies are driven by capitalism. to make the most out of the day and money they have and maximize profits, especially fortune 500 companies
like without government intervention, strawberry jam would have wood in it. like it's a thing. food companies realized that they could use less of the expensive strawberries as ingredients and just use wood. there are laws you cannot legally call it strawberry jam if you do this. you have to call it a strawberry product or spread. food companies are always trying to get that shit through. they have lobby groups pushing that all the time
it is more expensive to put metal detectors in a food processing plant. companies want to cut costs. it is a legal requirement in a lot of countries to have them. so it forces companies to install them.
also to do routine inspections. that is a government requirement. so are building codes. a lot of codes are the bare minimum. like some companies will exceed the code and have more protections but a lot don't. like if it is not in the code, they don't do it. so that's why having governing bodies that regulate building safety, worker safety, food safety and product safety are crucial. because without them, your employer will not see the need to have exit doors with quick release handles, or do routine fire sprinkler inspections or have road salt for the sidewalks. some of it is basic fucking stuff.
companies when left alone do not regulate themselves. it's been historically untrue. companies want to give you a product that is cheap for them to make and that they can sell at the highest price so they can get the most profit. for everyone who loves capitalism, that's what it is. the free market will not self-regulate. if you don't have anti-monopoly laws and anti-wage theft laws and workers' protections, the open market will not fix that organically.
when government officials talk about removing protections it is not good. like they were put in place for a reason. like drinking water and food regulations were written in blood. same with human rights and freedoms. like people died for the building code to be written. people died for occupational healthy and safety codes to be written. there is a reason food safety codes are there. companies will look at 100 people dying and say it was the cost of doing business. it is the government's job to say that is an unacceptable and for companies to do better
If there weren't minimum wage laws, the minimum wage would be 0
If there weren't child labor laws, the minimum age to work would be 0
This is not hyperbole, this is what companies would try and do in order to ensure the cheapest labor possible and greatest profits possible. Companies do not care about you unless your face is on a unit of currency.
My job had a training on AI and I was surprised how honest it was about AI’s limitations and problems, and we spent our activity time finding errors and issues with responses made by AI. But it did beg the question, why would I use this
The trainer was like, think of AI as an intern, student worker, or new coworker! They can do tasks for you, but be sure to carefully check their work.
We just established that this “new coworker” is racist, sexist, and can’t do math - why would I ask for their help??
The reason you can't be the next J R R Tolkien isn't because you don't have the talent, but because you're not the right kind of unwell. Tolkien wasn't bent for fantasy worldbuilding; he was bent for constructed languages, and got into fantasy worldbuilding in order to provide a material context in which to ground the notional evolution of the languages he invented. If you want to be the next Tolkien, you can't start with the worldbuilding; you've gotta find something extremely specific to fixate on, and develop it in such depth that inventing a world to contain it is genuinely the most logical next step.
#the best route is clearly to get really into a specific kink scenario and invent a world to justify it (via @salix03)
That's not even a joke. Developing a kink scenario so elaborate and so excruciatingly particular that it can only properly be contemplated in the frame of a world created specifically to contain it is genuinely closer to Tolkien's actual creative process than 99% of the stuff that plays at being heir to his legacy.
Carl Sagan was right. "If you wish to make an apple pie from scratch, you must first invent the universe"
i get asked regularly for photos of jpeg and it honestly feels like this every time
i have been informed of how foolish it was to post this without an actual photo of her. my apologies. i present: miss jpeg 🤲

For those of you wondering if he’s having fun, YES!!!! HE IS!!!!!
Ferrets are good with letting people know what they do and don’t like, and with the way hes just gone floppy, hes having a blast.
Also iirc his human has stated that he will demand the spins.
Ferrets can be so much silly fun.
This is like those animals that make their running wheels go super duper fast on purpose so that they can stop running and spin on it.
I've talked about reasons I don't like internet censorship a lot in the past, but one reason that's more specific than most is that if someone writes "shot" as "sh*t", no matter how clear the context is, I am not going to process the word as "shot".
The accuracy and precision is unparalleled
