adelina had grown up at these parties, and though it wasn’t her favorite past time, it wasn’t as dreadful as it was to most people. usually at this point in time, she would have been in a back room or outside with some pureblood boy snogging. but now that she was betrothed to avery, all the older women were pestering about the marriage, her dress, her wedding, and her favorite topic, building a family of their own. it all made adelina want to gauge her eyes out.
she thought that she was stuck surrounded by the women until she saw avery, looking absolutely miserable. understanding how he felt, she parted ways with the women with a smile, telling them that she needed to discuss things with avery. it was a total lie, but she could tell that avery needed help. she walked up to him, placing her hand on his arm, hoping that would ease him. “honestly? probably. the women here are absolutely mad,” she said, shaking her head before take a sip of the champagne. “but if you do, take me with you. i can’t deal with this on my own.”
in years prior he would have been able avoid any sort of lasting attention or even being required to attend because of his birth order. which brought up a twinge of resentment, what he quickly brushed off. he’d expected the change, but that didn’t make it any easier. there wasn’t even a ring on her finger yet (which he should remedy sooner rather than later), and he was already being expected to have some sort of opinion on child rearing.
“i almost wish you were over exaggerating, but their husbands are just as bad. if i have to hear another man talk about running his house with a firm hand i’m going to chug the first bottle of firewhiskey i can get my hands on.” even though he should still feel the pointed looks that were focused on them her gesture did help. “somehow i think if we both disappear they might not come looking for us.” tom replied rolling the glass in his hand adding under his breath. “as much as i have hear about children.”
