Day 5 of EIR CDS--Content Curation (Video)

Today, I will be evaluating a video that I have found based on my search on smart office appliances. I found the video by searching on Google with the key words: smart office appliances AND smart environment under the video search tool.

This video by Bloomberg Business shows how their office, The Edge, has a smart office environment. Firstly, when the cars drive into the car park, the cameras recognize you by your car license plate. Secondly, in the internal building, it gets even more interesting because no one in there has a personal desk to do their work as they have a system which assigns them a common table to work at based on their daily schedule. Next, the workers there are also able to control the intensity of the office lights on their phone application, and they can also manage the meeting room using their phones or laptop. 

This video is current as it was posted on 24 September 2015 and it is relevant to my research on smart office appliances and smart environment as all of the descriptions that I have provided above based on the video shows how people are changing work places into a smart office and plans for better future work places which allows things to be done more efficiently and reduces the energy used. 

The authority of the website is trustworthy as it is produced by Bloomberg, and Bloomberg is a Multi-National Company which delivers business and markets news, data, analysis, and video to the world, featuring stories from Businessweek and Bloomberg News.

The Purpose of this video is to show people all over the world how future buildings are most likely going to be like as they have plans to make every other building smarter and smarter in the future and would like others to do the same.

This video is highly recommended if you are looking for ideas of how a smart office works and you can thus get very relevant information for your research on smart environment, smart office appliances/devices and smart control of devices.

Day 5 of EIR CDS--Content Curation (Website)

Today, I will be evaluating a website which is relevant to my search query of “ smart office appliances AND smart environment” : http://www.serraview.com/smart-office-environments/ 

Attached below is a screenshot of the homepage of the website that I will be evaluating. 

I will be giving a brief introduction about what this company is about. Basically, Serraview is a company which provides Workplace Management and Optimization software to create a future workplace which is highly automated to show the concept of a smart office. 

This website is a current one as it has it’s copyrights last updated in 2015 as shown below.

The information in the website is also relevant to my research on smart office appliances as it gives me examples of the past products that they have launched to make the office appliances highly automated by using the applications on mobile devices and they have also provided me with a product which they will launch in the future. It is a mobile application which allows the office workers to be able to check and book whichever conference or meeting rooms are available in the building.

This website’s authority is trustworthy as it provides it’s services for most of the Australian government and the purpose of Serraview is to become the most trusted and respected choice for space planning software and workplace management technology worldwide as shown in the picture attached below.

In conclusion, this website is recommended as it has all the relevant information that one would need when researching about smart office appliances, for example their products’ details would help in telling you how a smart office would be managed.

Day 5 of EIR CDS--Content Curation (Scholarly Article using Library Database)

Today, I will be evaluating a scholarly article that I have found on EBSCOhost based on the key words I used, “smart office AND appliances”. The search had provided me with 16 search results and I have chose one article which is the most relevant to my research on smart office appliances.

Attached below is a screenshot of the article that I have chosen.

The article is current as it is posted in March 2016 and it is a very relevant article as it provided information on a appliance called the “smart lamp” which optimizes the indoor thermal comfort and energy savings of the entire office building. It’s authority is also trustworthy as it is an article by the Construction Technologies Institute and the National Research Council of Italy (ITC-CNR). The purpose of this article is to describe the design phase, development and practical application of the "Smart Lamp". It is a recommended article as it gives me an idea of how a smart office appliance is like and would help me in my research on smart office appliances.

Day 4 of EIR CDS--Google VS TP Library Database

Today, I will be making a comparison between the search results I get from Google and also one of TP’s Library Database, which in this case I will be using ProQuest (Arts, Business, Science, Sociology) since it gave me the most number of relevant results in the previous research post. 

1. Google

For my research on Smart Environment, I will be focusing on the part about smart office appliances, which help people to get things done more quickly and efficiently. This time round, I have used the keywords “smart office appliances AND smart environment” as shown below and Google provided me with about 1,810,000 results. 

I then found a website which provided me with relevant information for my research on smart office appliances. Attached below is a screenshot of a piece of information I saw on the site which I will be using in my research.

This information is useful for my research as it shows how the offices have become smart in a way that tasks/things assigned to the workers do not have to be carried out manually but can be done just by using the applications specially for the equipment on mobile devices or laptops.  

2. ProQuest (Arts, Business, Science, Sociology)

For ProQuest, I will be using the keywords “smart office appliances AND smart environment” as shown below.

From the 21 search results which ProQuest provided me with, I found a relevant journal talking about using wireless sensor networks to solve environmental problems by putting WSNs in applications such as home security, smart spaces, environmental monitoring, battlefield surveillance and target tracking.

This information is useful for my research on smart office appliances and smart environment as it provided me with an idea of how the applications for a smart environment/office work just by using the wireless sensor network.

In conclusion, Google’s strength is that it never fails to give at least one relevant website among the many search results that it provides me with. However, although ProQuest provides me with refined searches, I can hardly find extremely relevant websites for my research based on my keywords. Thus, Google is still a much more effective research database for my research on smart office appliances as compared to ProQuest (Arts, Business, Science, Sociology) because Google gives me more detailed and relevant information based on my search query.

Day 3 of EIR CDS--Library Database (Part 2)

Next, I will be describing how I used ProQuest (Arts, Business, Science, Sociology) from TP’s Library Database to do my research on the smart controlling of devices. Since in Part 1 I have used ProQuest’s database to search for information using the key words “smart manipulation of devices, I had got 6 relevant search results out of the first 10, I have decided to try using the advanced search on ProQuest with different key words to see if I can get more relevant search results for my research on smart control of devices.

First, I typed in the key words smart control AND devices OR equipment in the advanced search box and I selected the search results under peer reviewed and scholarly journals, whereby the search results provided have gone through an additional editorial process that involves review and approval by the author's peers (people who are experts in the same subject area) and is also an edition that is certified by academics for a target audience that is mainly academic and is published by a recognized society with academic purposes. In addition, I also made a requirement for the search results to be within the last 12 months as shown below so as to ensure the currency of the article.

From there, I managed to get a total of 922 results, with which 4 out of the first 10 results are quite useful in my research. One of the articles that I am going to show below is the most effective article for my research on smart controlling of devices in a smart environment as it shows how people in the future generations are able to monitor water quality and to also identify the locations of the water sampling stations.

Therefore, in conclusion, the ProQuest (Arts, Business, Science, Sociology) database is an effective Library Database as it is able to provide me with the feature of advanced search and lets me refine my searches by selecting what type of journals search results I would need and also allowing me to set the publishing date of journals that would be useful for my research. Thus, all of the features provided by ProQuest as mentioned above does help me to reduce the time spent on the research and it gives me useful and effective results for my research.

Day 3 of EIR CDS--Library Database (Part 1)

Today, we were introduced to TP Library’s Database and out of all of them, we have chose to focus on 3 of the research sites which are ACM Digital Library, EBSCOhost and ProQuest (Arts, Business, Science, Sociology). Having been tasked to use these three databases to see which would be useful and effective for our research, I will be giving my analysis on how effective the three databases are for my research.

1. ACM Digital Library

Using the key words “smart manipulation of devices”, I found 407,346 results on ACM Digital Library. However, out of the first 10 results provided, only 2 of them were useful and relevant to my search query. One advantage of using ACM Digital Library is that the abstract of the links’ content is provided and from there we can then decide whether or not to read the full text.

2. EBSCOhost 

Using the key words “smart manipulation AND devices”, i found 3 results on EBSCOhost but none of it is useful or relevant to my search query. However, it is also similar to ACM Digital Library as it summarizes the main point of the links’ content for us but EBSCOhost is not effective as i does not help me in my research at all.

3. ProQuest (Arts, Business, Science, Sociology)

Using the key words “smart manipulation of devices”, I found 2572 results on ProQuest (Arts, Business, Science, Sociology) and out of the first 10 results provided, 6 of them are useful and relevant to my search query. Similar to ACM Digital Library and EBSCOhost, ProQuest (Arts, Business, Science, Sociology) also provides an abstract of the links’ content for us but in addition, ProQuest also highlights parts of the texts whereby the key words of my search query in order to help me look out for the main parts which may be relevant to my research faster and easier.

Therefore, in conclusion, ProQuest (Arts, Business, Science, Sociology) is the most effective library database that I can use for my research together with my search query, as it provides me with the most relevant information that I will need for my research.

Day 2 of EIR CDS--Researching using Google

The highlights of today were learning about other search engines other than google, yahoo and bing. For example, before i attended today’s class, i never knew the existence of search engines like dogpile.com and also pixabay.com. I have also learnt to categorize the different types of search engines so that i will know which search engine would give me the most relevant results to my queries.

Using Google, I am able to refine my search by selecting the type of research results I would like to get, which in this case I have chosen the option under news(Singapore) and my key words are ‘’smart manipulation of devices’’. Google then provided me with 9200 results and out of the first 10, 6 of the news links provided were useful and relevant to my search query.

In my attempt to get more search results which are more relevant to my search query, I decided to use synonyms of my keywords, “smart control of devices”. Using those keywords, I managed to get 3 relevant results out of the first 10 search results.

Subsequently, I also tried another set of key words, “intelligent domination of devices”, and by searching for that on Google, I found 3 current websites which are relevant to my search query which will be very useful for my research on smart environment-internal control. Through these, I have realized that Google is an extremely effective search engine to use for my research as it is able to provide me with search results which are closely related to my search query just by using synonyms of the original key words.

However, when i used Bing to research using the same key words, ‘’smart manipulation of devices’’ and also under the news section, Bing only provided me with 26 results. In addition, out of the first 10 results Bing provided me with, only 3 were useful or relevant to my search query.

I have also observed that Google provides the links by which the key words that I have searched for have appeared in the link’s content while Bing provides the links by which the links are considered to be the best matching to my key words. However, Google is still more effective in helping me to find relevant information for my research as it not only has more search results but also more relevant information provided for me.

Day 1 of EIR CDS

Today was the first day that we started on the effective internet research CDS and we learnt more about strategizing our research to make it more effective. In addition, we also had the opportunity to apply what we have learnt during one of the workshops in PPP, which is to research based on the important key words so as to make effective internet research. Since our topic this time round is Smart Nation, my group and I have decided to work on smart environment. My research topic is on the smart control of devices and the following will be the search terms that I will be using: smart manipulation AND devices, intelligent manipulation of IT devices, smart control of devices, intelligent control of IT equipment. Smart control of devices is basically having the ability to be able to connect the device to a network like Bluetooth, NFC, WiFi, 3G, etc., so as to operate home and office appliances interactively, autonomously and conveniently.
