Looking back at the fight to save Imperial Typewriters of Hull

The famous Hedon Road factory employed 1,500 workers when its closure was announced 50 years ago.

The announcement of its closure prompted a march on Westminster by staff days before the closure date that had been issued to unions representing members.

The protest lasted for four and half months, with the workers eventually walking out of the plant on July 16, 1975.

This was the final assembly line at Imperial Typewriters which, in 1972, when the picture was taken, employed 1,500 people.
