"Thank you for your wise words."
"Also, I’m never boring."
“Never? That’s a pretty broad statement. Wanna make it a bet?”
Sphinx was bright, but Sphinx was also impulsive and these two traits could easily cancel each other out. Him and Tyson had become friends thanks to his yearning for entertainment and their relationship had held up. There was never a dull day between them even if they were merely engaged in conversation. “Okay, so… I sort of loosened the screws on a few of my teacher’s chairs. Pendlebury will have my ass if he finds out, but Ty, you should have seen their faces. Priceless.”
Tyson pulled at one of the curls atop his head and rose his eyebrows ever so slightly at Sphinx’s words. “Ah, a classic. I do wish I had gotten to see that.” He chuckled, imagining his own teachers falling as they tried to sit on their seats. It would be entertaining-- especially the professors whose classes were so boring to sit through. “Oh, blame it on Leon. I’m sure they’d believe it was him.”
"I think that history is the class that prepares your for whatever job you go into. Because it’s boring, and repetitive, and doesn’t really change."
“And that’s why I’m going into Engineering. I could never have a desk job I think I’d literally fall dead of boredom. Imagine my obituary: Cause of death-- budget reports.”
"Wow, you weren’t kidding when you said you were bored. Are they even trying to challenge you in the class?"
"They are, I think, but I just kind of get things faster than the other kids so while they're going into extra explanation is when I stop listening in class usually. Just for math though. Things like English and History I have to actually attempt to pay attention in without like-- falling asleep."
He had done something stupid, but when was that anything different than the norm? Since his mom threatened to remove him from Welton if he got in trouble, Sphinx’s main goal was to make sure he didn’t. “You my friend, are not going to die of boredom today.” Sphinx glanced over his shoulder for a moment, seeing no one rushing towards him which meant he was in the clear. For now at least. “I have something to tell you.”
He could always count on Sphinx to make sure to keep things interesting at Welton. That was what Tyson liked best about him. In fact it was the reason the two had become friends almost after immediately meeting each other, and the reason their friendship was still around now. There was no getting bored of Sphinx Dubinksy. "Hm?" He asked, looking at his friend and waiting for the boy to elaborate.
"I once counted how many collective watts the lights had during religion class. But how many ceiling tiles are there?"
"I counted thirty-four full ones, fifteen half ones on the sides of the room, and those awkward corner ones which because of the weird shape of the room there were eight of. So all in all its forty three and a half."
"I counted all the ceiling tiles in Pre-Calculus today. I doubt anyone can beat that kind of complete waste of productivity."
"So, what now, back to the good old Welton with the spirit week done, huh?Talk about boring shit."
"Life is only boring if you're boring."
Sphinx was moving swiftly through the halls — a glaring target in the midst of students despite the fact everyone was heading to one class or another. He only slowed down when he caught sight of a curly haired friend, an arm snaking around his shoulders. “Tyson, don’t turn around. Just keep walking and look like we’ve been engaged in a conversation this entire time.”
It was a slow day, and Tyson was hoping for some sort of escape from his next class when almost as if God had heard his prayer, Sphinx came up to him and fell into step. Tyson side-eyed the other boy as the arm fell around his shoulders. "Oh, thank God. I thought I was going to die of boredom today."
"I vote we get naked."
"Uh-" Tyson looks around, "Me? You’re talking to me right?"
Alek grinned, giving Tyson a dramatic ‘come hither’ look. “Of course, Mai Tai. Who else?”
"I thought perhaps you were talking to literally anyone else on the planet." He glanced around, "just none of whom happen to be within earshot."
"I vote we get naked."
"Uh-" Tyson looks around, "Me? You’re talking to me right?"
"Take these sunglasses and fake mustache. Pop your collar and follow me. Ask questions later."
Tyson squints but follows the older boy’s orders. “Am I not even allowed to ask what the mustache is necessary for? It’s itchy.”
Spontaneous (and probably bad ideas) Sentence Starters!
"Let's get married!"
"You know where we should go? Vegas."
"Run away with me."
"I'm feeling lucky. When's the next bus to Atlantic City?"
"I vote we get naked."
"Let's have kids."
"Hey, I just met you, and this is crazy, but here's my number, so call me maybe."
"Take these sunglasses and fake mustache. Pop your collar and follow me. Ask questions later."
"Hey! Let's start a fight!"
"I'll buy the hotel room if you buy room service in the morning."
"Want to rob a bank?"
"I just picked up a book at the library about how to hot wire cars. Let's go joy riding!"
"Get in loser, we're going shopping."
He found fault in Tyson’s reasoning; there were certainly enough people in the society who would likely find blame in him not feeling o k a y. For he didn’t suffer as much as others in the event, did her? Not like he knew Elijah well, not like he had the hardest job in the shit-storm of a mess.
Someone would blame him; it was by fate of chance it would happen.
But he said nothing of that, only shrugging in reply ( how were his shoulders not sore by how many times he repeated that motion of acceptance? h o w ? ).
"Well," he said, his tone forced and matter-of-fact, "seems like no one is okay, then, if it’s by our own decision if we are. Because we all lie to ourselves anyways."
Tyson considered. We all lie to ourselves anyway. It seemed a statement beyond the younger boy's years. People didn't mature that quickly naturally. He wondered what it was that had made Patrick grow up faster than the rest of them. For, Tyson felt as though he were the younger one in this conversation. If it weren't for the fact that Patrick had a baby face, Tyson wondered if he'd even remember that he was a year older than the boy. "That's a bit pessimistic," Tyson replied. "What makes you think that?"
Years & Years / Desire
He finally tossed the pen he held to the side. It was a lackluster throw, and it bounced once before clattering still. Nothing would come to him, so there was no point in holding onto the tool he usually used when working for the society. To think he was like a guardian of words, and he couldn’t even implement them the way he desired.
He wasn’t immediately aware of who sat beside him, but he knew better than to not stay that way. When he registered Tyson’s voice, he forced himself to answer his question. Oh, he took his time, but those in the society were a quick-fire sort; most had no patience for taking the time that was necessary ( for him, only him ) to construct the ceaseless flow of thoughts.
"Am I supposed to be okay?" he murmured, raising a brow not in question but a difficult sense of acceptance (because he was a winter child who knew all too well the freezing touch of pain, and yet would forever wince at the feeling).
Tyson pressed his lips together, considering the younger boy's question. Am I supposed to be okay? Were any of them supposed to be okay in a time like this? Tyson wasn't sure of the answer. It was a rare moment that Tyson considered the troubles other people might be going through. It was the fact that he himself was a generally untroubled person that made him go about life in the way he did.
However, something like this made everyone rethink what they knew about life in general. So, Patrick's question was not one Tyson currently had an answer to. A question in response to a question about the other's current state. Tyson supposed that this mean that no the other was indeed not okay. He exhaled a sigh.
"That's all up to you, I suppose," he replied. "Although, no one would blame you if you weren't right now."
"Wait and hope this doesn’t turn to shit? Well to more shit."
"Sit back and let Mommy and Daddy handle it, I guess?"
