Neither of them look away from the other; both of them are walking to close the distance. Weaving through the chaotic crowd, giggling in spite of themselves, waiting for the other to meet them halfway. When they do, it’s Dehya who reaches for Candace first.
Dehya has a crush.
The Sabzeruz festival is no longer a chore to look after, no longer so politically charged that Dehya needs to keep her eyes peeled for possible fights breaking out, no longer so restless that Candace needs to keep her knife at-hand to wield at a moment’s notice as the need arises.
In recent years since the coup, peace has filled their city. Neither of them could ask for more.
And yet—
Yet, they do. Neither of them look away from the other; both of them are walking to close the distance. Weaving through the chaotic crowd, giggling in spite of themselves, waiting for the other to meet them halfway. When they do, it’s Dehya who reaches for Candace first.
“You wore it,” Dehya murmured, low enough for only Candace to hear. “The dress I picked out for you.”
“And you’re wearing the shade of lipstick I picked out just for you,” said Candace, bringing a finger to the corner of Dehya’s mouth, careful not to smudge the red. “You look great.”
“Don’t I always?” Dehya tilts her head back and throws rambunctious laughter to the sky above.
Candace couldn’t help but laugh in turn. “Thank you for picking this dress out for me, by the way.”
With a skirt that nearly reaches the floor, the flowy fabric hides all the knives strapped around the holsters at Candace’s thigh. It ripples at any slight movement, like water gently falling, concealing the mere fact that Candace is ready to maim anyone who would dare interfere with this year’s festival.
Her long-sleeved shirt of hand-sewn satin stops a few inches below her breasts, exposing the sapphire gem adorning her belly button: the only piercing she has on her body except for the ones on her ears. It’s on that piercing Dehya’s eyes are fixed on, as if it were the first time she was seeing it.
“You look surprised. You were there when I got this!”
“But I’ve—well, you always hide it behind those thick dresses the aunties make for you nowadays, so.”
“You were going to admit it,” teases Candace. “You were going to say ‘I’ve missed seeing it,’ or ‘I’ve been wanting to see you wear it out again.’ Then you held back for some reason. Shy, all of a sudden?”
Dehya guffaws, again, and this time, the sound of it echoes across Treasures Street. As if the sound of her laughter were a lit matchstick against a spilled puddle of gasoline, a commotion rises among them, building and building until someone tops it off with a scream.
The two of them sigh in unison, falling in step next to each other as they march towards the sound. Candace bets that the fight is caused by another political disagreement just like the fights in previous years' festivals had been, while Dehya bets that it’s simply a showdown between people who got far too drunk, far too early in the morning.
“I bet it’s a quarrel between lovers,” a familiar voice says beside them. This man is unsurprisingly keeping up with their pace. He is the General Mahamatra, after all. “I was observing them from afar before they devolved into an altercation. I’m certain.”
As they break the fight off—Candace’s grip tight against the arms of one man who’s still struggling to break free from her, and Dehya’s knee pressed against the back of another man who’s since surrendered to his fate and has quit straining—they find that they were both wrong.
A lovers’ spat, between two completely sober men.
“You were right,” Dehya scoffs, after hearing the explanation from the man he had pinned under her knee. “I guess Candace and I owe you dinner, huh?”
“Can-dace be real? Deh-ya really want to treat me to dinner?”
“On behalf of Dehya,” Candace says, after successfully trapping the struggling man in handcuffs. “I would like to take back that offer.”
“Come on.” Cyno groans. “I can repeat the joke, if you didn’t get it. Can-dace—”
“No, we got it!” Dehya announces after also handcuffing the other man. She helps him rise to his feet, and as soon as he does, he starts sobbing and apologizing to his lover.
The other man in Candace’s hold starts to slacken in his efforts to get away, at the sound of his lover’s voice. He at least doesn’t start crying as the other one has, but he lets loose a long list of things he wants to apologize for, as well.
Cyno sighs. “Save your explanations for the Matra.”

Once the disruptors have been disposed of into the Matra’s office—they ought to think about their actions more carefully in the next festival they’ll go to, as is the lesson that will be drilled into their brains as they accomplish a whole slew of official statements and paperwork—Cyno emerges with a smug smile.
“I’m still being treated for dinner tonight, then? I won the bet after all.”
Candace looks at Dehya, who shrugs. “No more puns, though?”
“Pfft.” He snorts. “No promises. My jokes are too funny to keep to myself.”
Dehya thinks to herself, the General Mahamatra’s instincts are sharper than his jokes, but she doesn’t say this out loud. There will be many chances to squeeze this fact in, over dinner later this evening. What she says aloud instead, is a question that has been plaguing her mind ever since they made their bets regarding the ruckus this morning.
“How did you even know those two were lovers? Are you friends with them?”
Candace raises her eyebrows, clearly intrigued by the answer as well.
“Nah,” he says, shrugging. “But trust me. If you’ve been friends with the people I’m friends with, for as long as I’ve been friends with them? You’ll be able to tell a perfectly platonic squabble apart from a lovers’ quarrel.”
“Ah,” Dehya nods. “I think I know who you’re talking about.”
“You do?” Candace pipes up. She’s stopped hiding her burning curiosity, Dehya observes giddily. This is something she files away to tease Candace about later over dinner too.
“Remember that stoic guy who helped us during the coup?”
Cyno adds, “Tall guy, wears earphones, always brings up his roommate in conversations...”
“Oh. him! Of course I remember. He has a lover?”
For what happens next, Dehya is ultimately unable to decide which is funnier: that they run into the very man they’ve been talking about, or that without missing a beat the man proves Cyno’s point by managing to incite a spat between himself and his roommate right then and there. Funniest, perhaps, is the fact that the roommate is fuming while reaching for the hand of the very man who is causing his seeming teeter towards an aneurysm.
No, Dehya decides. The funniest part is how she is laughing herself silly at the expense of a man who is so openly smitten with his partner, when she herself is unable to even properly articulate a compliment for the woman she is clearly so smitten with.
To her horror, and then to her delight, this irony is still much funnier than any of the jokes Cyno tells them that night.

Looking in from the outside, you would think that Baizhu is living the best month of his life: he found another reliable lead in finding an elixir for immortality; he resolved a conflict between himself and his lover; he is operating his pharmacy and clinic perfectly smoothly.
Unfortunately, as with all things that seem perfect, his month is actually going terribly.
On a sickbed reserved for patients behind the folding screens, Qiqi, who is supposed to be a healthy immortal staff member, is coughing non-stop. She has been mired with this mysterious cough and cold sickness for weeks, and there has been nothing that Baizhu, Changsheng, nor Gui tried so far that has helped the poor girl.
This morning, Qiqi woke up without so much as a sniffle in her nose. She was even able to walk side-by-side with Baizhu and Changsheng up the stairs without needing to take a breath in between. Naturally, everyone thought Qiqi had been cured, that she’d had enough rest, and that she’d be able to return to work as she so anxiously had been wanting to.
Baizhu, for all his expertise in the field, is running himself recklessly into a proverbial wall. He knows that doing the same thing over and over again won’t solve the problem, but he also knows that the methods he and his medical team had tried no longer work, so he’ll have to get more creative.
A week of bedrest did not work—it only made Qiqi antsy. Baizhu suspects that she’d also sneaked out here and there when neither he nor Changsheng had been looking.
The usual anti-cough-and-cold potions did not work. No matter the concentration of the potion, no matter the frequency Qiqi took them, no matter the time of day Qiqi took it, it was rendered powerless by the mysterious affliction. The coughs and the colds always returned, as if it were never cured.
Even when Changsheng transferred her essence into Qiqi via Baizhu’s veins, even when her power surely coated Qiqi’s entire body via the warmth that spread across Baizhu’s palms, Qiqi remained unwell. In fact, Changsheng was even able to officially diagnose her physical health as fine and spotless.
None of these facts seem to matter. Qiqi is still curled up in the sickbed, sniffling and coughing.
When a knock comes, Changsheng recognizes it immediately as the newspaper’s arrival, and so she takes it as her cue to leave Baizhu’s neck. She slithers across the room to fetch the daily Steambird through the gap between the door and the floor.
She reads today’s headlines aloud. “‘Flu cases on the down low as summer beginsss.’ Ah, what an ironic headline indeed.”
She puts a corner of the newspaper in between her mouth and drags it across the room, dropping it at Baizhu’s foot once she reaches him. And then she slithers up his legs, up his torso, up until she settles scarf-like around his neck.
Baizhu picks the newspaper up and sets his gaze down at Qiqi’s now-sleeping form. “Isn’t this much worse than last night?”
Changsheng nods. “Well, right now, her vitals are stable. If I hadn’t ssstayed up all night listening to her sneeze and cough, I’d even wager she’s not ill anymore. She might need more ressst. I’ll have to take her home early again today.”
“Thank you, Changsheng.”
As one, they head to the kitchen to make tea for Qiqi, and fetch her cough medicine.
Just then, Gui enters the clinic, bringing with him bags of freshly cooked breakfast from Wanmin Restaurant. “Medications have all been distributed, we’re caught up at least for this morning,” Gui reports. “I know that when Qiqi wakes up later she will insist that she’s fine, and will very likely want to come help work, but please let her know that she can rest easy. We’re not too busy anymore this season, truly.”

Gui’s assessment is correct—the pharmacy and the clinic are both quiet throughout the day, visited only by a handful of people each hour, compared to the countless lines of patients that they had attended to in the previous season. No emergencies have arisen either.
Changsheng, with the help of Gui, took Qiqi home. Baizhu had to reassure them that he’s fine all by himself for the rest of the evening shift, and after a few more minutes of hesitation, they were eventually convinced that the evening wouldn’t give Baizhu any more trouble.
A few hours by his lonesome, trouble lets himself in.
Handsome, as usual, he strides into Baizhu’s clinic as self-assuredly as he’d walked into Baizhu’s life. He is wearing an easy smile, and sauntering over to where Baizhu is sitting with the gait of someone who knows that they belong in the space they’re walking on.
Baizhu returns the smile. “Are you in need of some medicine, love? You know I’m still on the clock.”
“I know. I saw your entire staff walking home, though. Thought I’d check up on how you’re doing.”
“I’m fine, really. But I can’t say the same for poor Qiqi. She’s been sick for weeks.”
A thoughtful silence passes between them, and when it’s broken, it almost makes the sound of a glass shattering. “Maybe we should stop spending so much time together.”
Baizhu narrows his eyes. “Excuse me?”
“I meant—!” His lover raises his hands, a helpless gesture of someone on the verge of certain death. “I’m not breaking up with you—all I meant is—ugh. Listen. I have a ton of younger siblings, and, well. Let’s just say, the symptoms that Qiqi is showing? They’re quite familiar.”
Baizhu leans forward on his chair. “They are?”
“Yes. It’s not usually intentional! But this longing can cause them to show symptoms that are similar to flu. Mysterious cough and colds that seem to have no cure, healthy physical body that seem to feel sick regardless. Trust me, she just misses you.”
Another heartbeat passes in which Baizhu considers this. Now that he’s come to think of it, he doesn’t remember when was the last time they had eaten dinner together (which he had replaced with dinners with his lover), the last time they had done stretches together (which he had replaced with a multitude of other physical activities with his lover), or the last time they had even had a full conversation that did not involve work (which he had replaced with going on dates).
“Oh no,” Baizhu whispers. “I was the one causing it all along?”
“And you are the only one who can cure it.”

Baizhu’s lover is correct. Qiqi simply needed to spend more time with Baizhu.
Over the course of the following week, Baizhu intentionally scheduled the times he could spend with Qiqi: stretching exercises in the morning, a mini field trip outside the pharmacy in the afternoon, and a full dinner in the evening.
Last night, he even allowed Qiqi to fall asleep in the same bed as him. Today when he woke up, he found Qiqi already up, bustling and carefree in the kitchen, brewing a pot of tea for three.
“Good morning, Doctor Bai.”
Baizhu has to blink his eyes awake some more to make sure he isn’t imagining the spring in Qiqi’s steps, and the small smile across her face. “Good morning, dear. Did you sleep well?”
Even without hearing the answer, Baizhu already knows. He feels his own smile growing on his face like the light of the sun’s rising over the horizon. He makes a mental note to thank his lover later.
