UCSC Commencement Traditions, #1 Pipe up: At Cowell, a bagpiper leads the procession where graduates march behind banners held by student leaders, representing the provosts of Cowell.

UCSC Commencement Traditions, #2 Deadheads: It wouldn’t be a UC Santa Cruz party without some Grateful Dead music, now would it? Our Graduate Division gives its graduates a groovy send-off by playing Truckin'by The Grateful Dead.

UCSC Commencement Traditions, #3 Who doesn’t love an owl?: Wise, nocturnal and oh so cute, the owl also happens to be the mascot for Kresge College. KC Owl makes a special appearance during commencement, delighting grads and families alike.

UCSC Commencement Traditions, #4 Here comes the sunflowers: Another Kresge tradition that lends itself to plenty of smiles and beautiful pictures. Each Kresge graduate is handed a sunflower as they walk across the stage.

UCSC Commencement Traditions #5, The bell tolls for thee, graduate: At Porter they ring the “Muse” five times to signify the start of the procession and ceremony, with the college banner waving high in the air.

UCSC Commencement Traditions, #6 On the big screen: UC Santa Cruz’s Film and Digital Media Department puts on a three-night screening of all the films created by Social Documentation MA candidates at the Del Mar Theater. The screenings bring to life two years of intense work, and give students a chance to look back on their immersion into the documentary craft of scholarly research and fearless storytelling. http://news.ucsc.edu/2015/06/soc-doc-screenings.html

UCSC Commencement Traditions, #7 A token of our affection: After spending years studying the earth and skies, our Earth and Planetary Studies majors are given polished token rocks to remember their time in the field.

UCSC Commencement Traditions, #8 Hug fest: What began three years ago as a spontaneous act of affection has turned into tradition for the environmental studies graduation ceremony held at the UC Santa Cruz Farm. Faculty are invited to form a receiving line to bid a final farewell with a hug for environmental studies graduates.

UCSC Commencement Traditions, #9 Use the Force, Slugs: How much do Slugs love Star Wars? We counted at least three ceremonies (Stevenson, Baskin School of Engineering, and College Eight) that use music from the epic space film series during their ceremonies. The Force will be with you ... always.

UCSC Commencement Traditions #10: The UC Santa Cruz History Department gives its grads cords: purple for classical studies, green for German studies, teal for Jewish studies, burgundy for history.

UCSC Commencement Traditions #11: Our Asian American/Pacific Islander Resource Center presents a handmade sash to each graduate, in a beautiful pattern that symbolizes their heritage.
