born and raised in anyang to a father who worked for a publishing company and a housewife. would say he grew up comfortably ( which just means he grew up upper middle class tbh :\ #humblebrag king ) 

is an only child and it shows

his family life was, to him, alright. his parents having high expectations for him surely did not cause him to internalize things, right?

picked up music as a hobby ever since his mother signed him up for piano lessons. hated it at first but grew to enjoy it over time. likes playing guitar over piano because he wants to look cool. whether or not he does look cool is up for debate.

honestly........ hasn’t experienced that many difficulties in life until he started living on his own for college, studying communications. then it all goes downhill once his father gets caught for doing illegal shit under his company’s nose. 

had to drop out because 1) stress 2) couldn’t afford tuition on his own and 3) had to lay low until everything blew over 

did and still does some odd jobs here and there when the money’s tight. some days he’s tutoring kids, some days he’s folding pizza boxes. sure, he’s probably only making things harder for himself but he’d rather do that than make his mother worry.

( plus, he’s ashamed that he didn’t finish school like she wanted him to. )

decided to join the all-nighters to make some extra cash while dicking around at his main job at the convenience store that he just can’t seem to get rid of

probably is the brendon urie (derogatory) of the all-nighters

→ personality

being around other people is overwhelming for him. he’s much more comfortable in smaller circles, or when he’s in his ~element~

just a tad bit pretentious. he’s just used to getting his way, y’know? usually he can keep it under control but he has his moments where it boils over

quiet and shy when you first meet him, is obnoxious when you’re close to him.

gets defensive real fast if opposed

will make you feel bad in order to get his way

tbh he’s kind of a bitch

though most of the time he just bottles shit up and lets it fester until it explodes

to people he likes / his friends / loved ones, he would die for you if he could. but since he can’t, he’ll drop other commitments to help a friend out. need someone to pick you up in the middle of the night? he’s your guy

has been very aimless for some time now because he feels unhappy with the direction of his life. he knows he can do so much better, yet he’s not doing better. it sucks, man. gotta love that quarter life crisis. 

is a little lonely since it’s just him :(

“fuck, are you the guy who got roped into playing accompaniment for that summer concert? the mozart sonata?” the piece in question had been a disaster because sungbin had come straight from baseball, out of breath and with shaking hands, and he’d never had a chance to practice with the pianist. with every passing moment he gains certainty that bokyung really is that boy, all grown up now.

and then, because he shouldn’t assume and he hasn’t given his name, he tacks that on. “sungbin. if i’m off track please just tell me now before i make an ass of myself.”

ah, yes. the mozart sonata - a disaster that was not quite a disaster, according to his mother, which meant it was a disaster. bokyung remembers staring at a music sheet but the notes kept moving and there wasn’t enough water in his cup and the sandwiches they have at the snack table made him gag. he does not remember the performance and does not want to.

sungbin sungbin sungbin… right! that sungbin. the boy who he would play tag with, who explained to him the difference between a curveball and a slider, who still towers over him after all these years.

bokyung grins. what are the odds that they’d reunite after all these years? what are the odds that they would both be in bands? he wonders what kind of message the universe is trying to send. it must mean something. 

“i’m bokyung. jang bokyung.” he picks at his silver chain, wraps a finger around it. rinse and repeat. he feels cooler in the midst of all this heat

“so,” he starts, “how’ve you been, man? i’ve—”  does he mention that his father’s in prison? does he mention that he dropped out of college? it seems pretty shitty to unload what a shitshow his life has been. instead bokyung says, “i’m in a band too. we’re called the all-nighters.” a thumb points towards his guitar case.

his phone rings.

like most of the contacts on bokyung’s phone, suzuki kaito’s name is formal and plain. it is not adorned with cutesy emojis or an affectionate nickname. bokyung has long since cleared his phone of any signs that he and kaito were anything more than a producer and client, and sometimes he wonders if kaito has done the same. 

this is all they are now: business associates. more than strangers, lesser than friends, even lesser than lovers it’s funny, despite everything, they still find themselves in each other’s lives. the growing distance between them not stopping how close their circles run. perhaps too close, the more bokyung thinks about it.

(he sees how kaito looks at the frontman of the goddamn band he’s in. either it’s a sick joke from the universe or his own mind playing tricks on him. it’s probably the latter... hopefully.)

of course, bokyung doesn’t care. he doesn’t care! why should he care?

but what if kaito’s stuck in some bad situation and needs a ride and knows bokyung is too nice and too stupid to say no. maybe kaito needs him to do something for one of the all-nighters’ song and knows he’s still awake at this hour.

bokyung is sniped mid-air by a widowmaker just shy from restarting the overtime timer, as if he needed more evidence that tonight is not his night. he’s already on a pathetic losing streak since he got home, thank you very much. he gets it. he leans back against his seat, hands running through his hair, as DEFEAT fades into his computer screen.

his phone rings.

“hello?”

there’s something familiar about one of the members of pretty and boys.

kim something. has to be a kim, bokyung thinks. normally bokyung doesn’t give a shit, knowing it’s best to mind your damn business, but this must be the third or fourth time he’s seen pretty and boys live and familiarity still nags at him.

he’s watching from afar, guitar case on his back and fingers numb, trying to place a name to a face and a face to a name and coming up with nothing. the drums kicks his chest and the bass thrums along his skin. the music’s good, and even if bokyung is wrong, it shouldn’t hurt to introduce himself.

when the set’s over, bokyung quietly follows the bassist outside.

“hey!” he calls out, quickening his pace. “do you play the violin?” 

when bokyung was a kid, he was forced to go to recitals because that’s what the other kids did. he hated it. sitting around hundreds of people you don’t know and they later watch you fuck up beauty and the beast on the piano? yeah, he prefers to remember the fun parts: running around with a boy around his age in a starchy suit, becoming friends for the night, the boy’s older sister calling after them.kim something.

“i mean,” bokyung scratches the back of his head, the heat rising on his cheeks more unbearable than the summer night, “you’re really talented, so i wouldn’t be surprised. you’re good!”

“i’m bokyung, by the way,” he sputters out. this is still salvageable. “i play for the all-nighters.”
