I'm just admitted to UIC, and I would like to know if it is possible to have a double major outside of you division? And also, upon graduation, will the Degree be any different from the normal Yonsei University degree?

Yes you can double major outside your division. You will need to contact your advisor for your admissions division and they can help if possible. Some are more difficult due to incompatibility in scheduling or requirements. Another thing to consider is which campus you will attend classes. After the first year you can do a MW-TT schedule switching campuses if it works out better.

The degree you receive is an equivalent bachelors degree listing your school (UIC), major division, and all double majors and minors. You will get a Korean copy and English copy. Also its shiny and looks fancy.

After you’ve been accepted to uic, is the offer conditional? Like do u have to get a certain GPA for ur final graduation results??

I would assume that you should maintain your GPA to the best of your ability. Some wiggle room is allowed. Dropping significantly would probably require either a thorough explanation to UIC or they can rescind their offer. Your final transcript is required by the 30th of August normally. If the final papers show a significant drop when you’re already in Korea it will be tricky. The number one thing is graduation, grade second. If you have a scholarship given to you at admission then it would be conditional based on grades as well.

How did you manage to study and work at the same time? An alum tell me that most UIC student don't have a part-time job since the school is academically demanding.

Well first of all, the laws have changed since then and it has gotten more difficult. Honestly, way too difficult and expensive to be worth it.

School is academically demanding. I have the good old "former gifted kid, now lost in life" problem where I actually do better when I have a lot of things going on. If you like to take your time with learning and put in a lot of work when it comes to academics, then you shouldn't try to work while at UIC. In my case it gave me stuff to do, put me in a schedule, and made me more efficient in my work.

The tip I would give anyone who wants to work while having a high academic workload is to get a mindless job. By that I mean find a job that has nothing to do with your major and lets you just forget about everything else. This means you get a break from academic stress and just get to focus on work and make money.

Is the degree awarded at the end of Energy and Environmental Science and Engineering will be a bachelor's degree in engineering?

Should be a BS degree

hey, i hope you're well. i saw that you're an american who went to uic. i got in, but i'd like to come back to the states for a masters. i'm just worried about not getting into american masters program with my degree, or that the job outlook might not be the best. have you gotten a job after uic graduation? do you think that uic was good for your career path? do you think i'll be able to come back and get into a masters program?

I do want to stress that I haven't gotten a job because 1) pandemonium 2) I'm taking some time for myself. Your degree from UIC is a valid BA/BS degree. I think UIC was good because I have a more interesting experience to share and build on. Many grad schools would actually like having you as part of their student body because of that.

I have been reading your blog for a while and found it extremely helpful. I would like to ask you about the tuition. If I get admitted, must I send a proof that my parents have 10K in their bank accounts? Can the numbers work if the money is in different banks?

I believe that could work. Your forms would have to state all account holders as sponsors/financial support. All account information would have to be supplied such as the names, types of accounts, etc that hold a total of 10k. It would be easier to transfer all money to a single account just to send the info then redistribute to the proper allocations.

Do you know what a levels you need to apply

I applied to Yonsei UIC 3rd round, and I got an email saying I do not have to re-submit the documents the me and my teachers uploaded on the Common App. Does this mean I don’t have to write a offline application and the 2 other essays?

I would contact the UIC admissions office. With the pandemonium, you might have alternative admissions rules but I expect you will still have to send the paper application.

i was wondering if living in the uic dorms for the first year is smth u absolutely have to do? like if u live in songdo on your own it still wouldn’t be possible? thanks in advance !

You have to live in the dorms your first year. I have only seen 2 exceptions to the rule and they were for people who were married and/or had kids.

Trust me, if you are paying for it you want to stay in the dorms. The dorms cost around 2k a semester while a good apartment in Songdo near campus will cost you 5k deposit and 800+ a month minimum.

Hi I was wondering if you can get a bank loan at yucca if not is there any other way that you can get financial supported

I can only speak from an American perspective, but student loans cannot be taken out for UIC. You also cannot get FAFSA support. You can take out a personal loan or home equity loan with your parent/guardian if possible. Since you have no income or credit, any loan you take out will have to be cosigned by a sponsor.

Do you think I have a chance of getting in without submitting test scores despite having high academic grades and a lot of extracurriculars (more on student council and leadership rather than sports though)? Its a bit hard to take the SATs during COVID but UIC is really my dream school :(

I would contact the school, but you can apply without SAT results theoretically. Things are different during covid and they will most likely have an understanding of what they can and will accept.

Do you think it's a disadvantage that I come from a developing country applying to UIC?

It shouldn’t, but I really wouldn’t know. Your grades and application materials are what really matter. As long as you have valid English test results the country of origin shouldn’t be a consideration

what is the differences between UIC and Yonsei Undergraduate Course? I heard that many regular Yonsei students dont like UIC students

There are some courses that are UIC-only. This means no normal Yonsei or exchange students can join. Most CC courses are UIC-only with the exception of Christianity, Chapel, and service (basically the all-Yonsei requirements).

Major courses for majors that have a direct equivalent in Korean will either be offered by UIC or the equivalent college. For majors like PSIR and ECON, most courses are a split between UIC, college of social science, and exchange. Some courses bar exchange students, but most have a mix.

If there is no equivalent, such as CLC, Korean students will generally not be in those courses but exchange students may.

Many Korean students at Yonsei dislike UIC because they believe we have an easier admissions process. Jokes on them, we pay double tuition. The larger discrimination is based on race rather than admissions.

do you happen to have the admissions scholarship? is it true that not a lot of people get that?

Yep.

How did you start building a life out of Yonsei? Even without a language barrier, I am not sure how to go about finding friends outside of school clubs/classes. Are there meetup groups or something like that?

There are meetup groups for language/cultural exchange both inside and outside Yonsei. I personally don't recommend them if you can find an alternate way of meeting people.

The Koreans who attend these groups fall into 1 of 3 categories:

1) Want to ride the “white unicorn” and just go to be a little creepy

2) Want free English lessons. No bb, you pay for that.

3) Have no way of making friends on their own. Like yes, I understand you may want to learn about foreign people, but the only reason you have to come to a meetup group is that you cant figure out how to naturally form connections.

If you want to meet foreigners just go to a foreign-style bar and get to know people. Alternatively, talk to people in your school.

If you want to meet Koreans there are better ways. You can join clubs for hobbies you actually like such as cooking, music, sports, or art.

It’s fine if most of your friends are outside of school, but I personally prefer a separation because I have different interests and hobbies from the people I go to classes with. Meeting people in a new place is hard but it will happen eventually and you’ll be ok~

hi! is there a place in the yonsei portal where i can see all the classes offered at uic for a specific semester? (so that i can choose which ones to take)

In the portal, there is an icon for the Course Catalog. You can search by semester, major, etc.. Use this and/or the Everytime app to plan registration.

Does uic offer allowance?

As in monetary allowance?

No, not at all
