What homestuck is: a story about kids playing a game and making a universe. Canāt be said to be character driven (the plot largely happens at the characters), but puts great emphasis on character dynamics and interactions. Makes use of metanarratives in interesting ways, mostly as a ājokeā the audience is in on. Could be argued theyāre a framing device for the story itself?
What homestuck isnāt: a story about stories. It has never been the focus, for good reason.
Hs2 took the meta elements of homestuck, assumed those were the most interesting things about it (absolutely not, it was all characters and world building) and made a story about what it means to be a story.
As a concept thatāsā¦ Basically fine. I think I would be intrigued if I came across a story like that, but it would only keep my interest if it was executed in an.. Entertaining way.
If the story is just trying to make a point about writing technicalities (like what seems to be hs2 main one: what is canon and how do we define it?) then Iām completely disinterested. It would be a complete drag. Boring and pretentious.
At this point you could just write an academic paper and have only people interested in these things read it and discuss it (although I think itās a stupid point that doesnāt warrant going that far), but if someone really wants to discuss it they can go ahead and do it.
But they should do it with their own story, their own characters, and make it about that from the beginning.
What hs2 has done here is basically take hostage the homestuck characters, take away an ending from a story that has been over for 4 years now, so that the writersā new avant-garde whatever-this-is could have an audience from the start.
Fandom loves these characters, so of course theyāll follow the comic.
I donāt doubt thereās plenty of people that actually like hs2ās plot (what even is the plot though) but Iām convinced thereās so many more that wouldnāt be interested in a story like this if it was a brand new thing with new characters.
Most people are just holding on because they want new content of their faves and the character interactions seem to be good enough for them to justify it, somehow (can you tell I donāt agree with that).
Meanwhe, I just wish theyād stop messing with this story and let the characters rest. Hs was never about whatever theyāre trying to make it about and doing this is just putting a strain on the fandom.
