lover lost twice

a lover is lost twice.

first when hearts are being broken, left with nothing but aching and no one to hold on to. memories growing distant yet always in arms reach. there is always something to hold on to, a smell, a sound, a souvenir, your voice with me right here, whatever it takes to get me through the night.

then when hearts are mending, after months of crying and wondering, what went wrong, who started the fight? the true loss lies in freedom. freedom from sorrow and longing, happiness and regret. in finding a new home that no longer needs to remember the old. the loss lies in drying up tears, finding the softness in sleeping alone. in no longer reliving midnight conversations and misty morning drop offs at train stations.

take comfort in knowing that free can mean open,  if you let it.  in loosing what was once a part of you, your life and your identity, you also make room for something new. heavy though growing lighter, my heart is slowly learning to be comfortable in the mellow joy of simply being with myself.
