Hillary Clinton Visits UM: A PR Perspective
By Chelsea Wortham, President of PRSSA
Today I worked an amazing event with my UM Media Relations team, where I’ve been interning for the past four years. Today, former secretary of state, Hillary Clinton visited the University of Miami. As a former colleague of our President, Donna Shalala, Clinton was asked to visit the University of Miami for a speaking engagement followed by a brief Q&A with student submitted questions. However my job as an intern with UM’s media relations team was not limited to just the event. Our team began pitching to media months in advance that Clinton was coming, from there we built our final list of confirmed media, we then had to act as coordinators between the University, Clinton’s political team, and the Secret Service. Since Clinton is a former First Lady, as well as potential Democratic nominee for 2016, she is protected at all times by the United States Secret Service. From making sure the venue would be safe, to conducting a security sweep of all of the press who attended, our team was actively involved with the high level security of the Clinton’s visit.
Once the event started I handled set up of the riser, which is a lifted platform away from the stage and general seating where photographers and videographers can capture the event on their cameras. I also strategically positioned media on the riser according to news outlet and circulation, I also checked-in media and acted as their personal concierge – helping them to get whatever they needed in order to create a good story for UM. Our job as media relations personnel was to manage the news outlets. Approximately 70 news sources covered Clinton’s visit including local news like NBC6 Miami, national news like The Washington Post, and political news outlets like CNN Politics and my job was to assist them with whatever they needed. Some journalists had early deadlines to adhere to, some needed to do interviews with students in order to get their reaction, while others needed to access a mult box in order to connect to the audio source of the venue. Overall, the experience was amazing. I learned that being in PR you always have to think of “what can I do to for the journalist to get a great story out of this?” Being able to show off your client, which in my case is my own university is a great feeling.
