hi we are on the post apocalypse bus together can we hold hands
It was a nice day.
My Good Omens Day Out!
Whatever your thoughts are on the finale, I’m so happy to be a part of this little corner of the internet, all brought together by an angel and demon with their ineffable love :)
My positive thoughts on why I found the Good Omens finale satisfying:
I think it's important to consider that a good character based narrative is about the characters feelings, rather than the reader or the audiences.
Crowley and Aziraphale, while we as the audience have known them almost exclusively as a demon and an angel, have never been particularly good at their roles, nor was it their core identify. Their identities were based on how they rejected their roles, and embraced something else.
And what did they embrace? Earth and humanity. The things they found and chose to define them are the Bentley, the bookshop, food and drink, music, film, television, theatre, all very human creations. And the list goes on.
They always wanted to be human, and be together.
And that's the ending they got to have.
That's the only one there could have been, to close the circle of who they are as characters.
Neither Heaven incarnate, nor Hell incarnate.
But human incarnate.
thinking about the posts before the finale when people would post pictures of something and saying everything reminds them of aziraphale and crowley and now it’s like that could be them in this lifetime/universe💔💔💔💔💔
okay so I’m not gonna make this a super long drawn-out post or anything because I don’t have my thoughts together enough for that yet. but generally the way I feel about the ending of Good Omens is divided pretty cleanly in two:
1) I am very sad that we didn’t get to see Aziraphale and Crowley have a happy ending in their own universe;
and
2) I think it’s a love letter to humanity that it ended the way it did. I also think it’s insanely beautiful and poignant that the ending is basically “their souls will always find their way back to each other in every universe, forever.” I genuinely can’t think about that too much or it makes me forget how to breathe and swallow.
This was always going to be complicated. There was never going to be a clean and easy way out, as much as we all wished there would be.
I will never stop thinking about these two, in all of their incarnations and across all universes (including the one we watched over the course of the series), finding each other and falling in love and proving that there is so much value in daring to question and to break the cycle and to make sacrifices and to LOVE.
I love them. I always will.
anyways i went to their bench yesterday before i watched the finale now it feels so bittersweet looking back at all my pics 😞💔
Honest (SPOILER) thoughts regarding the GO finale, I think a valuable piece of writing people are kinda overlooking is the INCREDIBLE subversion of their main motivations
Like we as the audience are lead to believe from the start that Crowley is this jaded, cynical little fucker who’s fond of one person and one person only. The typical “nothing in this world matters except you” grumpy who doesn’t give a shit about a universe that rejected him. Aziraphale, likewise, is pretty easily seen as the bigger picture guy, it’s obvious he loves Crowley deeply but it’s the mission of the larger world, the good of the people, that draws his time and energy- he chooses that responsibility more than Crowley. These are the roles we’ve seen them play and the archetypes we’ve kinda locked them in to. It matches with their grumpy vs sunshine attitudes, their aesthetics etc
Then in s2 we started noticing some cracks in it. We’ve met Angel Crowley who is a beautiful sunshiny dreamer who cares so deeply about the gorgeous world around him. Aziraphale starts to get a bit wrapped up in his own self interest from time to time, caring more about his bookshop or Crowley or even Jim than his larger mission. These little moments added depth to their characters, but ultimately didn’t shake our ideas of them. But THEN-
When they were asked by God what they would save, everything in the world has been stripped from them. The universe is lost- all that remains is each other and the final question of “what in the whole of existence matters to you most?” And we think we know what they’ll say, we think the way we’ve been taught all this time- Crowley is the selfish lover and Aziraphale is the heartbroken rejector.
But instead we meet their cores. We meet the truest stripped down versions of themselves and we learn the truth. Aziraphale picks Crowley. His lover, his life, the being that completes him. He makes the selfish, or loving, choice, no matter what it means to the world. And Crowley- Crowley is crying for the world. He is so utterly helplessly desperate for humanity to have their chance that he’s willing to throw away everything out of his sheer love for them. We’ve met the old part of him again, the artist and the lover, the selfless one he’s had within him all along. And for Aziraphale we’ve finally met the lover in him too, the one who’s finally willing to put his love for Crowley above all else.
I don’t know but I think it’s absolutely beautiful to get to know characters that you thought had these black and white motivations, only to discover that when it all comes down to it, they are capable of throwing everything we assumed about them out the window. There’s no black and white or even grey, but a whole world of mixed up colours and choices that make them whole. The sinful Angel and the selfless demon to the last.
is it devastating that they didn't get their ideal happy ending???? yes. it kills me that they weren't able to actually BE together and stay with the rest of humanity. But they would've chosen humanity in every single time line. They've made it a point that they care deeply for humanity, and actually giving them a chance is all they've ever wanted. Besides each other, of course. So as much as it crumbles me, that's always how it was gonna go.
And at least we know, they would find each other in every universe. Our Aziraphale and Crowley might be gone, but even as different beings, they found and loved each other. isn't that what it is all about?
now that i’ve slept on it, i like to think that the new universe was born out of their ineffable love. it doesn’t null or make anything they went through pointless because without that timeline, without the turmoil, the years or pining, bonding, desperation and heartbreak, they wouldn’t have had fallen in love with each other in they way they did without what humanity showed them was possible and i think that’s a beautiful thing 🥲 im still upset with what could’ve been but ultimately they chose to allow people to not be forced into sides as they were and allow them the freedom which they never really had.
Did I finish good omens season 3 or did it finish me?
trying to be optimistic and choosing to believe that aziraphale and crowley both knew that they would not have grown to love each other as they did, had it not been for humanity, for earth to see people for what they were. it was their parting gift to give humanity what humanity gave them which was each other, their own side. free of oppositions, free of eternal life or punishment to let humanity just be “them” which is why they made their decision as heartbreaking as it was.
