What are the Criteria of a Good Test?
Constructing and designing exams is an essential component in evaluating students' comprehension of the course material and their level of proficiency in applying what they have learned. Careful planning will help provide more calibrated results, and of course, guided by the criteria of a good test.
“Sometimes, it’s easier to tell a stranger something very personal. It`s like there’s less risk, opening yourself up to someone who doesn’t know you.”
— Linwood Barclay
Differentiate Testing, Assessment, Evaluation, and Measurement.
What is the distinction among these words? Well, some people may believe that there are simply too many words with the same meaning. Even though Testing, Assessment, Evaluation, and Measurement have been there for as long as we can remember. But there are still several misconceptions about them. As they say, they are all the same, they measure the same thing, and give the same results. Even though none of these comments are true, they are common and I would like to clear up them all right now.
The following sections attempt to define testing, assessment, evaluation, and measurement:
(1). Testing means examining someone's knowledge of something to determine what he or she knows or has learned. It measures the level of skill or knowledge that has been reached.
There are different types of tests:
(a). Placement tests: It is designed to help educators place a student into a particular level or section of a language curriculum or school
(b). Diagnostic tests: they help teachers and learners to identify strengths and weaknesses.
Proficiency tests: measure a learner’s level of language.
(c). Achievement tests: they are intended to measure the skills and knowledge learned after some kind of instruction.
Two Types of Achievement Test
• Progress Achievement Test
• Final Achievement Test
(2). Assessment means gathering data to understand it. It’s detecting, analyzing, and interpreting students’ learning and progress.
What Are the Purposes of Assessment?
There are three types of purposes for assessment:
• Assessment for learning
• Assessment as learning
• Assessment of learning
(3). Evaluation can be defined as the act of assigning value to the measure. It is a systematic and continuous process wherein the analysis of the outcome derived from the measurement of the characteristic of the object, person, or activity is performed as per the defined standards. In evaluation, what we do is, pass judgment regarding how suitable, desirable, or valuable something is.
Hence, in evaluation, the knowledge of the student/learner is not the only aspect that is considered, rather all the aspects which are important for his/her development are taken into consideration.
So, evaluation covers four different aspects, namely:role-of-evaluation
• Objectives
• Learning Experiences
• Learner’s appraisal
• Relationship between the above three
It aims at ascertaining the progress of the student, reforming the system of education, and increasing the answerability for outcomes.
(4). Measurement in education isn’t that far in meaning compared to any other field. It still has the same use; measurement means identifying the characteristics, skills, or knowledge of something. In measuring the state of something we are simply collecting numerical data in comparison to a set of standards using common tools.
📌As a student, what essential principles of assessment and evaluation should you bear in mind?
In my point of view, the essential principles of assessment and evaluation I should bear in mind is the "Teachers should communicate assessments and evaluation strategies and plan to inform the students of the objectives and assessment procedures relative to the objectives. It is important for us, students, to be aware of the objectives, assessment and evaluation strategies. For the reason that, as we go through the course we should be guided by the learning objectives. Excellent learning objectives serve as a guide for us, as we review our course information and get ready for exams. The most effective learning objectives are those that are both actionable and measurable.

"More of me, less like you"
I am Rhesa Mae B. Bulilan a 3rd yr. student taking up Bachelor of Secondary Education majoring in English. I enrolled in an education program because I want to fulfill my childhood dream of becoming a teacher. Not to mention that my parents are one of the reasons behind the pursuance of it.
On the 17th of December, 2000 at exactly 2:26 a.m., a bundle of joy named Rhesa, and yes that's me was born and is the third child of Reynaldo and Ma. Theresa. I have three other siblings who are all males. I was the 2nd to the youngest and an only daughter in the family. I had a lot to be grateful for and so as complaints about being the unica hija, but also performs the responsibility of being an “Ate” to my youngest brother.
I am a cinephile which is a fancy way of saying I love watching movies. I can watch any movie but particularly enjoys genres like romantic comedy, mysteries, sci-fi, and adventures. I am also fond of listening to music, reading books, and playing chess. I was once chosen to join the chess tournament during my sixth grade in elementary and made it up to the Area V of the competition, I may not win the title but the memories I had experienced always brought me serenity.
This post will serve as my self-introduction and probably the content of this blog. I have always been a fan of posting random thoughts and sharing positive discourse and encouragements. So I am very much delighted to share more of me in such a way that I would be using this for educational purposes as well.
"Courage doesn’t always roar. Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying ‘I will try again tomorrow.”– Mary Anne Radmacher. This quote is the guiding principle that reminds me to pursue and keep striving in working for my success.

Most of us have a social obligation to assist limit the spread of COVID-19 by staying at home and staying safe during these unprecedented, and frankly rather frightening times; but not everyone. Doctors, nurses, and other medical personnel, as well as police, educators, firefighters, grocery store employees, postal/delivery workers, gas station attendants, public transportation workers, mental health and social service workers, farmers, and a slew of other "essential workers," put themselves in harm's way on a daily basis to keep the rest of us safe.
COVID-19 may be today's supervillain, but that doesn't stop our real-life heroes from performing their jobs and working relentlessly to find ways to counter the threat and eventually defeat the unseen foe. We grieve the thousands of people who have died as a result of the virus around the world. At the same time, we join Filipinos in continuing the tradition of honoring the best of human kindness, generosity, social justice, human rights, solidarity, and Bayanihan spirit in the face of severe adversity. We honor the qualities that make our front liners and essential workers, humanitarians real-life heroes. We applaud them for continuing to put their lives on the line in the face of danger and uncertainty. Their efforts must not go unnoticed nor be forgotten.
We appreciate your relentless dedication, courage, and commitment! Sending a big THANK YOU and virtual hugs!
“And you don’t know where to begin because you’ve spent a lifetime fitting in.”
— Ed Sheeran
There's always been a struggle between choosing familial duty and achieving personal growth. Especially in our society today, wherein choosing and caring more about yourself is entitled to be selfish. Personal growth is a life-long process that enhances oneself, which then leads to the realization of goals and an improved quality of life. Like everyone else, my family has played a vital part in my life and has affected my outlook and how I perceive things.
In the novel entitled "Little Women," It tells the story of four sisters, Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy March, and the social demands put on them as women. It emphasizes the significance of hard work, which is directly linked to how women should conduct themselves in society.
The part of the text that influenced my opinion was that by the time one of the girls focuses on their heart's desires and/or neglects their familial obligations, something horrible happens. The girls end up feeling guilty and ashamed if they focus on their personal life as opposed to their obligation to their family. Though the girls' intention for following their heart's desire was to live a meaningful personal life in order not to be a burden and a heavy-weight on their parents' shoulders. Particularly given that they are not getting any younger.
With that saying so, I don't think there is something wrong on having genuine identity. We tend to define ourselves by our social standing, our, friends and family, our basic needs and ambitions, and the emotional and intellectual expressions of our thoughts.
Being self-aware entails a thorough knowledge and comprehension of oneself, as well as awareness of one's own sentiments and personality. Learning to better understand why you feel what you feel and why you behave in a certain way is the goal of practicing self-awareness. Having this understanding offers you the power and freedom to change aspects of your life, allowing you to live the life you desire. If you don't know who you are, it's nearly impossible to improve and embrace yourself. Clarity on who you are and what you want may be liberating, allowing you to make changes with confidence.
The Naked and The Dead, Critical Analysis by: Rhesa Mae Bulilan
The Naked and the Dead, novel by Norman Mailer, published in 1948 and hailed as one of the finest American novels to come out of World War II. The story concerns a platoon of 13 American soldiers who are stationed on the Japanese-held island of Anopopei in the Pacific. With almost journalistic detail, Mailer records the lives of men at war, characterizing the soldiers individually in flashbacks that illuminate their pasts. The Naked and the Dead received unprecedented critical acclaim upon its publication and has since enjoyed a long and well-deserved tenure in the American canon.
The Naked and The Dead written by Norman Mailer, his full name is Norman Kingsley Mailer, (born January 31, 1923, Long Branch, New Jersey, U.S.—died November 10, 2007, New York, New York), American novelist and journalist best known for using a form of journalism—called New Journalism—that combines the imaginative subjectivity of literature with the more objective qualities of journalism. Both Mailer’s fiction and his nonfiction made a radical critique of the totalitarianism he believed inherent in the centralized power structure of 20th- and 21st-century America. Mailer grew up in Brooklyn and graduated from Harvard University in 1943 with a degree in aeronautical engineering. Drafted into the army in 1944, he served in the Pacific until 1946. While he was enrolled at the Sorbonne, in Paris, he wrote The Naked and the Dead (1948), hailed immediately as one of the finest American novels to come out of World War II.
The power of images to excite our emotions is undeniable. This seems doubly true when the picture or object depicts the unclothed human body. The “nude” remains an emblem of beauty and high aesthetic aspiration. Nakedness, on the other hand, unglamorous, tends to be read as either abject or obscene.
The Naked and the Dead is written in four parts. The sections, “Wave,” “Argil and Mold,” “Plant and Phantom,” and “Wake” contain Chorus sections of dialogue in play form between characters. Also making up part of the narrative are sections presented as Time Machine that offers background and flashbacks. The novel takes place on Anopopei, a fictional island located in the South Pacific. American forces, attempting to advance into the Philippines, are making an effort to drive out the Japanese. The book centers on one platoon.
In the first section, "Wave," characters are waiting to receive their orders for an attack by sea. Battle with the Japanese begins and fire is exchanged. Hennessey's death has shaken many of the men as it is the first death they have seen since being at war. In "Argil and Mold," Major General Cummings thinks highly of Lieutenant Hearn. Hearn is the only officer whom Cummings feels he can relate to on an intellectual level. Sam Croft, a soldier with a thirst for blood, shoots and kills a Japanese man. In the penultimate section, "Plant and Phantom," Cummings assigns Hearn to lead the platoon through a jungle and then up Mountain Anaka to find a way to reach the far side of the enemy. After Hearn's death, Croft takes charge of the platoon. The final section of The Naked and the Dead is titled "Wake" Major Dalleson begins to think about a new training system that troops will participate in. Cummings feels disappointed that the victory seemed to come too easily, attributed to Japanese troops being taxed to the point of exhaustion.
The Naked and the Dead is regarded as a great WWII novel. One of its strengths is that it depicts the war from multiple perspectives: an Army general in command of a Pacific island invasion, an HQ officer, an experienced sergeant leading a platoon, and the soldiers who are the implements of everyone else, some of whom aspire to become noncoms while others are only concerned with surviving. The novel is profoundly introspective on each of these levels, addressing diverse people's motivations, feelings, and concerns to the point where discussions frequently depict not just what is said, but also what is considered and deliberately not uttered. The characters' internal worlds are just as crucial as the novel's external happenings.
The story depicts the events of an American invasion of a Pacific island during WWII, with a focus on the experiences of a Recon and Intelligence unit. The story offers a unique perspective on the peculiar mix of dullness, routine physical labor, tremendous physical exertion, significant physical discomforts and maladies, and intervals of terrifying anxiety that characterize military life, particularly at the level of the regular Army soldier. It also looks at how officers keep control over their soldiers and how the gap between officers and soldiers is established.
Despite its many qualities, my initial impression of the story was that the characters are basic caricatures that are both dull and unlike actual people. As you discover the interior lives of the numerous people, you get past this first impression to some extent, but I never felt fully free of this general categorization that was demeaning to race, religion, country of origin, and personality. It was tough to stomach practically all of the male characters' continuously negative views of women throughout the story. I could connect with some of the characters, but none that I particularly loved or admired. The story is successful in portraying war in all of its brutality, but it also portrays man in all of his flaws and fears. The campaign's outcome, for both the Army and the Recon platoon, is effective in bringing home the message.
Why does everything seem hard?
