What do you consider yourself (ghost, zombie, spirit, etc.)?
Do you wish you were alive and mortal again?
Was death frightening to you?
What have you learned since your death?
When you meet living people, are they afraid of you?
If you could be brought back to life, would you accept?
Did you return for a reason?

Undead? Vampires? What the bloody hell had Jacob stepped in this time?
“Been talking the Charles Dickens, have you?” he mused, mostly jesting. It sounded like the sort of things Charles had been on about when Jacob had agreed to help his ridiculous little Ghost Club. He remembered Spring Heeled Jack well enough (and he had the scars to prove it).
“And what do you get out of all this?” he wondered.
Jacob wasn’t sure he believed in vampires, but then things like Pieces of Eden were a bit outside the realm of normal. He had no reason to kill this Mr. Hodges (yet), but if rumors were to be believed (and if he was in dead what he said he was), then the strange man had every reason to off Jacob at the first available moment. Age had given Jacob more caution, his recklessness more attuned to self sacrifice than selfish need. If there truly was a way to bring an end to the Ripper business, Jacob would hear the man out.
“Not directly, no. But it does suit our purposes to feed him and men like him stories that we know aren’t true, so they can continue to ‘prove’ that creatures like myself don’t exist. It benefits us to be considered impossibilities, after all. And it doesn’t take much to convince them; men like him aren’t scientists. They go in with a set of beliefs, and rather than look to see what they find, they merely look for confirmation for what they already believe. What they look for isn’t truth, but affirmation, and that requires painfully little work. It does benefit those like me a great deal though.”
“What do I get out of it? I thought that would be painfully obvious to someone whose mind is not as shallow as you like to make it seem. The ripper was already one of your people; now imagine the fact that he is still running around, only now he’s undead and possesses supernatural abilities. Abilities that might grow stronger if left unchecked.”
“Of course, I imagine that won’t happen. No, the chance of his survival is relatively low. The problem, as you might have already ascertained, is that he might reveal himself for what he now is, which would put those like me in a rather bad place. Furthermore, it would result in a good excuse for another inquisition style burning time; imagine the Templars you so hate using their power across the world to claim all their enemies are vampires and burning them at the stake?”
“Granted, that is unlikely to happen. I destroyed the vampire that was created from the spring heeled jack persona; and his creator was already grabbed and destroyed by the prince of london. That leaves the ripper. And given your history with him, you know his methods and how to find him. We both get what we want.”
virtualbatgirl
She could not believe her ears. Vampire? Seriously? It seemed almost ridiculous until you considered the context. This was a city where grown men dressed up as bats and growled menacingly enough to make armed thugs pee their pants. A city where urban legends like crocodile-men who walk upright were a reality.
So despite her initial reaction, this was not something that could merely be dismissed out of hand.
Her all purpose portable weapons kit was prepared for just about anything. If Barbara’s fighting sticks were made of wood, they would be easily snapped to make stakes, but even this option remained unavailable. And she wasn’t sure she believed in the cross thing, either.
Barbara swallowed the truculent reply that threatened to spill forth.
“Forgive me if I don’t shake your hand,” she offered instead. “You being a vampire, and me being a living, breathing female. I don’t want to get any closer. Not until I know more.”
That got a laugh out of him. A rarity, for sure. “In a city where mass murderers dress up as clowns, you wandered alone into a place like this and only suddenly seem suspicious when I claim to be a vampire. Besides, don’t play the woman card with me; if you were truly worried about that you wouldn’t have come alone like this.”
He was still smoking; how could he do that if he couldn’t breathe? Maybe he was lying about the vampire thing?
“You also didn’t answer my question about who you are. I was nice enough to tell you; so unless you can reciprocate my good faith, I’m going to have to treat you as an enemy. And I assure you, you don’t want that.”
charmandbrassknuckles
Jacob listened, increasingly impressed by the stranger. There weren’t many who pegged Jacob so quickly, and more worrisome still, he mentioned the Order . The man knew who he was. What he was. It was Jacob’s turn to be on guard.
At the mention of Jack, the Assassin’s countenance changed entirely as if a bucket of cold water had been dumped over his head. The Ripper was something of a sore subject with Jacob, both personally and professionally.
“Who are you?” Jacob demanded.
The stranger seemed to know quite a bit about Jacob, which put the assassin at a disadvantage.
“John Hodges. One of the many members of the undead who’ve been watching you assassins and templars fight each other for a while. Granted, I’ve not watched as long as most; I’m fairly young by my kind’s standards. But given your history with the subject at present, we’ve got some work to do.”
“Simply put, I spend my time tracking down and killing monsters; and the only reason I’m talking to you is because some fool embraced the man and murderer you faced down. Twice, actually. The first was spring heeled jack, who I’ve already tracked down and dealt with. The second was the ripper, and while I initially thought it’d be the less problematic of the two, it’s turned out to be quite the opposite.”
“So, fancy yourself a vampire hunter, lad?” He puffed on the cigarette, clearly not too concerned with giving himself away. There was reason to believe this one wouldn’t be so rash as to try and kill him, for all the good it’d do.

“Stalking people down a London ally at this time of night is usually considered nefarious,” Jacob mused. “But then, I suppose I’m not one to talk. So…friend are foe?”
“I’m not sure if you’re stupid or extremely confident or a genius with an opening like that.” Truly, such a thing was a rarity among people; he was far more used to people being guarded. “A lesser man might think that you were simply being direct and rude, but by asking such a question you force me to take a side, thus putting me on the defensive in this conversation. Far from being a fool, you may as well have made your opening remarks a bayonet charge.” Curious indeed.
“Besides, I’m not stalking you. I allowed you to notice my coming and you correctly moved into an alley knowing that I would follow you. You also knew that if I did not, that I would be a threat, because I would have known what you were doing, and thus had knowledge of your order and how it behaves.”
“But, I digress. I’m your ally, in a sense. An enemy in another. However, let’s be allies while we kill a demon, shall we? I’ve heard talk that you’ve dealt with a certain Jack, a man with quite a cult following, and a reputation for decadent heels. I also know you failed to kill him. Interested in finishing the job?”

To argue seemed pointless. He was no fool who could be easily befuddled by a little mental gymnastics. And she had sought him out.
“I’m working for an information broker,” she admitted, though there was a measure of distortion in her answer. To make the lie true she would pay herself a dollar from her war chest. “Trying to figure out what your nature is. And if this city has anything to fear from you.”
“Considering you’ve threatened to kill me within minutes of encountering me, I’m starting to think the latter.”
“You really need to stop lying.” He took another drag on his cigarette, looking at her with a bit of a bored expression. “I know you’re lying, because I myself am an information broker; and any information broker worth their salt knows how to get in touch with another. Furthermore, I make no secret of my goals; it’s fairly clear to those whom I directly threaten why I do so.”
“This tells me that you’re the personally curious type, because no amount of money would cause anyone to travel as far as you had. At least, not for someone like me. There’s a relationship between how much work is being required and how much someone is willing to pay; to learn something as obvious as my nature and end goal would not cost much, and the amount of work you’ve done to track me down would far exceed any payment you would be given.”
“Second, I can reaffirm your personality because you came yourself. Most people, if their drones went missing, would not then risk life and limb to find someone like me. But the fact that I eluded you, that we played this game, only intrigued you more. Thus, I was able to guide the third drone, allowing you to feel confident enough to come yourself. This tells me you’re not working with anyone else.”
He took another drag on his cigarette before giving a slightly amused chuckle. “Also, there are other things about you that make this clear. You didn’t come armed accordingly, and I can tell just by looking at you that you’re not a mage. So you don’t know what I am, or anything about me. If you did, I imagine you’d come to me armed with more curious items.”
“So, before we go further, let’s start from a position of mutual respect, shall we? John Hodges, vampire. Served in the second world war. I track down demons and other supernatural threats to humanity and destroy them. Now, who are you?”
@rumandlipstick
He was probably not what she expected. In fact, he assumed as much, when her blade broke rather than enter his skin. It didn’t surprise him; he’d flayed himself and molded his skin to be durable enough to withstand fire and bullets with ease. Even if she had pierced him, he wasn’t even alive; killing that which was already dead wasn’t possible.
“I’m glad to see when I give you an opening you take it. That’s practical. However, I suppose it would make sense that you’d follow the trail I left you.” Honestly, he wasn’t certain these assassins were all that interesting. Not the mortal ones anyway. The Assamites had been assassins since their inception.
“So, now that I know you’re not without skill or talent, how about we deal with our common enemies together?” He seemed completely unfazed by the idea that she had been trying to kill him a moment ago. Perhaps his ability to be surprised had faded with age.
“You tried to kill me!”
“Don’t insult me. If I’d tried to kill you, you’d be dead.”
theamazondiana
She should’ve just walked away, but Diana was impulsive and prone to acting on emotion. She coiled her fingers around the collar of his shirt, making sure he was listening. Not taking her lightly again.
“If you think you are doing me some sort of service, you are not. I am older and wiser than you are, I have seen things you cannot imagine. I come from worlds your kind cannot enter. If you want to claim you can hunt down all I love, trust me, I can and will do the same. You may claim these words are not a threat. Not something you would do. Then don’t say them. I do not take kindly to them at all.”
He met her gaze unflinchingly, clearly not unused to this exact situation. “Older? Yes. Wiser? No. Were you wiser, you would know the difference between you and I is that you care. Can you do all that? Yes. But you would only do all that after someone has taken everything from you. If you were wise, you would not allow them to get under your skin like this. To make you emotional and impulsive and to make mistakes.”
“Claim your power all you want. When you face an enemy who regards victory not in terms of battles won or lost, but in how far they pushed you, then you will understand. I will speak my wisdom to you, and I will not be intimidated simply because you let your fear override your sense. Simply because you do not wish to acknowledge evil does not mean it will not one day come for you and those around you if you are not careful. No amount of anger or threats will change that.”
“No man is led to war by ignorance, and no one who has anything to gain from it is dissuaded by fear. You should know that well, give it was Thucydides who said it.”
theamazondiana
“….I think our conversation should be over now.” Clearly, he had bothered her with his dark words. Diana did not enjoy speaking in hypotheticals.
“If you so desire. But I should point out, it’s better that you face reality now, rather than waiting for the worst to happen. The best way to avoid problems is to prepare for them in advance.”
“The fact is this; you’re a being used to being able to shrug off anything that you’re threatened with. That makes you nearly invulnerable, but you’re not invincible. And while you may have a long life, others do not.”
“You may not like considering the worst, but the only way to prevent it is to predict it.”
theamazondiana
A long silence. “The ones I care about are dead. Really dead, not like you.”
“How heroic. However, you’re too short sighted, especially dealing with the dead.”
“For example, if I truly wished to get to you, or believed there was magical power that I could acquire through that, I would seek out every single person you’ve ever had prolonged contact with. If they’re dead, then I would track down their descendants until there was no one left. One by one, crossing off the names.”
“When you act the hero, every single person is a target. Every one. In the information game, they’re inroads. For example, if I wanted to get to you, I might seek out casual acquaintances, bug their homes, torture or acquire dirt on them, and force them to spy on you for me. That’s how this game works.”
“Of course, I wouldn’t do that, but if I’ve thought of how to do it, you can be certain others would certainly not have the same moral or ethical objections to doing so. You may not have anyone you love that’s alive, but that doesn’t mean those around you aren’t targets. No one is too small to be overlooked.”
theamazondiana
“Ah, but I do not fear them, so what is it to me? I can hold my own.”
“I wonder if you would speak the same way if it got those you cared about killed.”
here’s a fun meme: anonymously suggest a muse you think I’d be good at writing for based on what you’ve seen from this blog.

“My mother always told me my Achilles heel is I give everyone the benefit of the doubt. I’m no good at secrets. It is a wonder the entire world is not aware of who I am in civilian life, honestly,” she replied, well aware he was right. She gave too much away too quickly.
“But it was only I who was formed of clay, truly. I am not actually an Amazon. I will tell you this much because we both have something at stake if we divulged our lives to others.”
“An Achilles heel is a mortally wounding flaw that is hard to exploit. You being unable to hide information is more like you going into battle naked, blindfolded, and bound to a pole. It also makes you hard to trust. A person who speaks so freely is a danger to anyone who needs discretion.”
“A curious fact to give, really. But my life is already over; and no doubt if you tried to divulge anything about me, forces would unite against you and discredit you in ways you cannot imagine. Not for any love of me, mind you. Only for love of themselves.”
@virtualbatgirl
“That’s a poor lie. No one tries so hard to find something unless they’re deliberately looking for it. And in your condition, you’re not exactly able to do much urban adventuring.” He was, admittedly, somewhat impressed that she’d found the entrance to his haven, but she still hadn’t found her way in. That would require more than just her; he didn’t leave anything unguarded.
“He lit a cigarette and looked over at her, somewhat tiredly. “The question of whether or not I will kill you comes down to why you’re looking for me.”
I want to be both hellfire and holy water.
