WE ALWAYS WIN
The Third Man 1949 | dir. Carol Reed
Can you remember the 90s?
Yes
No
As in, do any of your memories take place during the 90s (yes, a single memory from 1999 counts).
I can remember about half of them. My earliest memory was probably 1995 and they go from there.
NCUTI GATWA and SHARON D. CLARKE in THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST (2025)
Prev, I have excellent news for you
The Importance of Being Earnest on Project Gutenberg (the script is public domain, so itâs free and legal!) (and omg so worth reading; I am rereading it now and reliving all the great moments of this production!)
Far as I can recall, the only lines added in this production were âWeâve covered the scene changeâ and âG, A, Y, S & Mâ
The rest is pure uncut original Oscar Wilde đ đ
I did this too! The vegetarian joke and the stockbrokers joke are also original to the text. There were a few other places where they modernized a word or phrase (âhe went to Oxfordâ is an update of âhe is an Oxonianâ; âinterested in social justiceâ used to be âinterested in social legislationâ; and there were probably a few more). But it was delightful (and scary) how comprehensible it still was.
Oooh yes!
Also, I of course had to check the original stage direction for when Jack and Algy came in singing âYouâre Beautiful.â Here it is, in its entirety.
[Enter Jack followed by Algernon. They whistle some dreadful popular air from a British Opera.]
Oscar, thatâs so delightfully bitchy. I hope that, wherever you are, you enjoyed the choice of dreadful popular air.
Ahh yes! Oscar Wilde really said âput a terrible pop song here.â đ
There are ways and ways to play Lady Bracknellâs response here, but I think this one was âyou are SO BUSTED, Algy, I do not believe one single word coming out of your mouth about Bunburyâ and honestly thatâs my favorite reading.
won't make my mama proud, it's gonna cause a scene
I love you. And love isn't silly. Aren't you interested in love?
