NCUTI GATWA and SHARON D. CLARKE in THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST (2025)
Prev, I have excellent news for you
The Importance of Being Earnest on Project Gutenberg (the script is public domain, so it’s free and legal!) (and omg so worth reading; I am rereading it now and reliving all the great moments of this production!)
Far as I can recall, the only lines added in this production were “We’ve covered the scene change” and “G, A, Y, S & M”
The rest is pure uncut original Oscar Wilde 💚 🌈
I did this too! The vegetarian joke and the stockbrokers joke are also original to the text. There were a few other places where they modernized a word or phrase (“he went to Oxford” is an update of “he is an Oxonian”; “interested in social justice” used to be “interested in social legislation”; and there were probably a few more). But it was delightful (and scary) how comprehensible it still was.
Oooh yes!
Also, I of course had to check the original stage direction for when Jack and Algy came in singing “You’re Beautiful.” Here it is, in its entirety.
[Enter Jack followed by Algernon. They whistle some dreadful popular air from a British Opera.]
Oscar, that’s so delightfully bitchy. I hope that, wherever you are, you enjoyed the choice of dreadful popular air.
Ahh yes! Oscar Wilde really said “put a terrible pop song here.” 😀
There are ways and ways to play Lady Bracknell’s response here, but I think this one was “you are SO BUSTED, Algy, I do not believe one single word coming out of your mouth about Bunbury” and honestly that’s my favorite reading.
won't make my mama proud, it's gonna cause a scene
I love you. And love isn't silly. Aren't you interested in love?

The Devil's Foot
When Watson published “The Second Stain” in late 1904, his devoted readers were shocked to learn that Holmes – and presumably himself – did not reside in Baker Street anymore. The famous address had served them well, but now the detective had decided to retire to the Sussex countryside, seemingly alone. The previous year, Holmes had also relaxed his decade-long publishing ban, leading to the revelation of his return. The next two volumes of adventures provide a rich, if fragmentary, view of their post-221B life. One merely hopes that the two saw more of each other than the “occasional week-end visits” Holmes tells us about later on.
