Writing Characters Who Stutter.

Any advice on writing a character who talks with a stutter?

We’re both in luck here, because one of the main characters in my spring novel, We Are, We Are Monsters, has a slight stutter, and they say there’s no better way to truly learn something then to teach it!

Fore note: Because I have no firsthand experience in stuttering, this article draws heavily from a number of reliable sources, which will be all cited throughout. 

What is a stutter? A speech disorder, also known as stammering or diffluent speech. It generally includes some variation of repeated words, sounds, or syllables, halted speech mid-sentence, and an uneven rate of speech. [1]

1. Choose specific rules for your character’s stutter and stick with them.

If you’re going to portray stutter that’s both realistic and readable, you’ll need to know how and on what sounds your character stutters, and then stick to them. Choose specific sounds to employ the stutter on (Gabrielle Massman recommends between three and seven [3]), and familiarize yourself with the three basic forms of stuttering [2]:

Repetitions of sounds or syllables; “Li-li-like this” or “Like-like-like this.”

Prolongations; “Llllllllike this.”

Blocks; “L—ike this.”

Once you know which sounds your character stutters on and how that stuttering primarily comes out, you’ll want to decide on how you’ll portray the stutter through writing. You can find a few forms of this in the above examples. Other possibilities include using ellipses or commas:

I don’t know why but I have an impression that both Nico and Will are “scared” of their (future) father-in-laws.

Will is scared of Hades because, well, who isn’t, anw.

Nico is “scared” of Apollo, too, but the funny thing is that it’s because Apollo loves him too much and doesn’t hesitate to show both boys his fatherly love. It’s too much. It’s obnoxious. It’s Apollo. And Nico is… well, Nico. So yeah, he freaks out every time.

The guy kissed Nico’s head when he rescued him yall LOL. I want to believe Apollo showers Nico with obnoxious father-in-law’s love whenever he has a chance, just to see him make a face and run. All the while Will’s just there, being glad that the two get along.

Apollo’s at his best when his speech patterns are “21yo college frat boy meets ye olde theatrical actor”. He responds with things like “But hark! Behold!” and “you should’ve been there, man. It totally rocked” in the same breath and kicks the fight or flight reflexes of every demigod in a mile radius into survival mode

Imagine if Richie's fear of being outed was more represented in IT.

When It tries to use it against Richie, Richie feels like he just might die bc he's not ready and even though the world is very much accepting now. He's just not fucking ready for saying it out loud let alone for other people to actually know he likes guys. But then the inevitable comes and It proudly outs Richie who goes as pale as a sheet and who can't hear a thing besides the beating of his heart bc the Losers heard. There wasn't a way they didn't hear what It said. It was creeping closer to Richie who couldn't move, couldn't breathe, couldn't think.

And instead of death or whatever reaction Richie was expecting from his friends or It, he gets an angry Eddie running at It with full force shouting, "That's just too far, fuckface!" followed by the rest of Losers and a chorus of "What kind of monster are you?" "You'll regret the day you landed on this planet." "Fucking asshole!" "Eat my gay fists!"

It is safe to say that Richie never felt more loved and appreciated than when his friends brutally assaulted an alien clown just bc it outed him.

ok so my basic idea is that the beta + alpha kids and a few of the beta trolls (humanstuck in this case)

probably gonna follow john bc hes the main character ever. hes in for a suicide attempt due to severe depression. he rooms with dave, whos in for a violent outburst where he beat his brother so bad he was hospitalized. he doesnt remember any of it thanks to having undiagnosed did, bro sent him away because that would be easier than going through the court system. (yes bro is abusive in this au)

ill be brief with everyone else bc this is just a rough draft for now.

rose is in for severe psychosis and delusions of grandeur and past suicide threats. her mom didnt want to deal with her so she just sent her away

jade is a semi feral kid. she was raised around humans for the majority of the age period of socialization skills. (idk if that makes any sense sorry) was found on her granpas island at age 13 and has been in and out of inpatient due to numerous disorders

jane is in for both atypical anorexia and severe paranoid thoughts. (because of stalkers bc shes the heiress to a big company idk subject to change)

roxy signed herself up for inpatient rehab due to almost overdosing on fentanyl laced coke. that was the thing that made her realize that she needed help

dirk is in for a pretty gruesome suicide attempt. hes under constant watch because he keeps ripping his stitches out. hes only allowed to eat with spoons and draw with crayons

jake is in for severe dissociation and what i can only describe to be mania. generally doesnt care about himself or what happens to him

kanayas in for “autocannibalism” and delusions of being a vampire. is not allowed around sharp objects bc she will cut herself to drink her own blood

vriskas in for dangerous erratic behaviour. chose to get help than go to juvenile detention bc she is definitely not mentally stable

cant think of anything for karkat and terezi sorry

gamzee is in for rehab and for his unmedicated/undiagnosed schizophrenia. i have a lot of ideas for him but i dont know how to put it into words
