Question for Healthcare Peoples
I’m currently applying to jobs (yikes!) and have seen a lot of private practice postings in addition to your large hospital system postings. For those currently working, how did you choose between the two, and what did you find to be the pros and cons?
Thanks so much, and Happy Friday!
Disclaimer: I’m a family practice PA at a privately owned practice
No “one size fits all” and “research only” driven rules with private office’s. Meaning no CEO’s that never studied medicine telling you how and what to do even if it is at the expense of good medical practice.
However, sometimes you do get caught in money saving agendas with private practices as well, especially since they don’t really have any oversight and some struggle to make money.
More resources with hospital owned practices typically but also sometimes restrictions on how to use them. For example I’ve heard of providers getting reprimanded whenever their patients choose not to use their specific hospital for ER services or labs.
Sometimes you can negotiate better hours in private practice than hospital owned places. Docs who own their own practice who want to keep you will sometimes make accommodations according to your quality of life desires.
There are many factors that go into it and I go back an forth with whether or not my next job should be with a private practice or hospital owned myself. There are so many more I could list so if you have specific questions about my experiences let me know.
And bigger hospital doesn’t always mean better bennies. I work for a major hospital system on the west coast and employee benefits are SHIT.
I work for a smaller surgeons clinic that is apart of a larger Inc. and I absolutely love it. So we run our own clinic, but it’s still apart of a bigger company. It’s so much more personable and I love my coworkers so much. They’ve literally become a family to me. I have no problem getting time off when I need it, or if I just need a mental health pay. The pay and benefits are pretty on par with the other healthcare insurances (I work in billing so I can see how good benefits are when patients are from another healthcare facility). In our corporation, doctors have the same benefits as the administration and clinical workers.
