Under Review : Kanye West - #Yeezus
It's easy to dismiss Kanye West as an egotistical product of self belief, a narcissist in every aspect. It is easy also to interpret his latest offering #Yeezus as a massage to his already huge persona.
But bare with me on this, as a self professed Kanye doubter (the character, not producer/rapper), #Yeezus manages to actually surpass my expectations. On the first listen he has delivered a quite frankly racist, self affirming attempt at placing himself at the level of a deity. But listen again...
#Yeezus comments on public power, its ability to raise a person to these godly heights, and the ability to destroy them should this 'god' fall. "As soon as they like you, make ’em unlike you.” Kanye is who he is because of you and me, we created him and the public has to take a responsibility for that, perhaps #Yeezus makes an effort at passing the buck and pointing a finger but it speaks volumes on trends, fame and excess. Lyrically once again he pushes through the mainstream and delivers an interesting and important album. while tracks like 'Cold' dont help the obvious opinion, I can't help but picture him recording this track with a big ironic smile on his face, just awaiting the backlash from people missing the point. "Can't a young nigga get money any more, tell PETA my mink is dragging on the floor, can I have a bad bitch without no flaws, come meet me without no drawers" Production wise this album is a departure from some of the style you might expect from a West album. While sample heavy there is some new sounds in here which is a welcome change. The un-credited collaboration list is one to behold, with Daft Punk leading the dream team having worked on "Black Skinhead", "On Sight" and "I Am God", Hudson Mohawke delivering his signature style demoed with his T.N.G.H.T project on "Blood On The Leaves". Also on the list sits legendary Rick Rubin who stepped in last minute to polish #Yeezus for release. The sample list is even longer with the likes of Nina Simone, Bon Iver, Frank Ocean, Charlie Wilson, Chief Keef while the much talked about Skrillex collab has been left off the final release.
All round I would go into #Yeezus with an open mind and leave your character notions at the door, its easy to pigeon hole this in a box marked "Ego" but don't take it too seriously, Kanye knows which buttons to push but also how to construct a thought provoking and socially relevant album.

News: Jay-z dropping new album in July...
We reported on the masterful PR stunt that saw the last Daft Punk album being one of the most succesfully promoted and subsequently hyped albums in recent times - it now appears that Jay-Z has teamed up with Samsung to do the same. THis teaser vidoe was aired in some American netball game over the weekend, and although I'm normally a sceptic to commercialised marketing and brand endoresments from Hip Hop artists, after watching this and hearing some snippets - I am completely suckered in!! Physically excited by this ablum......fuck you Samsung.....check it out for yourself! Enjoy

Introducing: Kirk Spencer - Wonderland EP
Rising in the ranks in the new producers league - Kirk Spencer is fast becoming a very noticeable name and someone, we predict, is destined for big things. We had the joy of seeing him play a small set in an intimate venue this week and although we were glad not to be gung-ho in the middle of a mosh pit in some mid-week regret party, couldn't help but think that this guy needs a big crowd. Something I'm sure will come, fusing elements of a whole range of electronic music with Eastern melodies and subtle gltiches and big beats, he's managed to carve a niche in a scene which leaves him following the likes of UTT favourite Hudson Mohawke or Arrab Muzik and we think he will emulate their successes.
His Wonderland EP has been about for a little while and if you haven't checked it we highly recommend you have a taste, and more importantly if see the unassuming name Kirk Spencer on a line up somewhere deifintely go check him out. Link to Wonderlan EP below.......Enjoy
