How do I explain Plato's allegory of the cave to my cat?
âI rememberâ is more romantic than âI love youâ
A little advice from someone studying extremist groups: if youâre in a social media environment where the daily ubiquitous message is that you have no hope of any kind of future and you canât possibly achieve anything without a violent overthrow of society, youâre being radicalized, and not in the good way.
If the solution to your problems sounds like âwe need a blank slateâ itâs a lie. There are no blank slates, and the closest approximation people can generally imagine is âburn it all down and let God/fate/history sort it outâ.
Thatâs not problem solving. Itâs barely catharsis, in practice. It doesnât just create more problems than it solves, it destroys more solutions than it creates.
Put the apocalypse down, and back away slowly.
Real solutions to complex, systemic problems are not so easily reduced to âus good, them evil; kill them.â
people who watched Suzume after Madoka Magica and had all their red alerts on when Daijin showed up hmu because the trauma is real
So do people realize that we aren't building new train tracks when we expand the amteak network, I have multiple times seen people say that we shouldn't expand the network because it would destroy protected lands, which would be a fair criticism but Amtrak doesn't build new tracks, we use existing tracks. We are not destroying protected lands, we are using land that has already been clear for a century
Also the alternative is more highways which destroy significantly more land for less capacity than railways. So the question is do you want to keep complaining about something that isn't happening and let the environment get damaged as a result or do you want to actually learn how things work
So, wait... Were the tracks not in use at all? Or was it like *only* commercial transport on those tracks? Either way, its good that amtrak will be able to use them again, but one would be much more frustrating
Almost all rail tracks in the US are either abandoned or only used for freight rail at the moment
Jesus, we really have no excuse for having such a lackluster rail system, do we?
Sure we do! The US government hate both rail and you personally
public libraries in the usa offering free digital library cards to people not in their areas (as of october 2023):
brooklyn (13-21yo us residents)
seattle (13-26yo us residents)
boston (13-26yo us residents)
los angeles (13-18yo california residents)
san diego (12-26yo us residents, not the whole collection just commonly banned books)
these cards (part of the books unbanned initiative) get you access to each library's complete libby/overdrive collection (unless otherwise mentioned), no hoopla/kanopy/physical copies included.
ebook collections are expensive to maintain (many american libraries have annual fees for non-residents because of this) but because of an uptick in book banning (particularly brutal in mississippi last summer) larger libraries have opened their doors more, which is very kind of them!
i've used my seattle card for the last several months and their libby collection has about three times the books that my local library does, which is wonderful for accessing more niche titles or skipping a waiting list. would love to hear of similar ebook initiatives internationally!
i use library extension (firefox/safari/chrome compatible) to check all my collections (+ the internet archive) at once, works for several different countries highly recommend it.
spotify seems to be offering 15hrs/month of audiobook listening to premium subscribers and while that does seem useful if you're already paying and are after a new release with a long library waitlist, libraries are better for everything else.
Are you trying to kill your mother? Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023)
Group of us were sitting underneath a staircase in the back of a bar huddled over the only table that would fit all six of us when my friend asks another for something in Spanish.
âA what??â Asks the second friend, Cuban.
First friend, Salvadoreñan, repeats while pointing at a straw. âA pajilla.â
âYou mean an ABSORBENTE?â the Cuban says a little too condescendingly, because across from them the Colombian goes âNot a napkin dumbass, a pitilloâ to which the Puerto Rican snaps âItâs a fuckin sorbeto, a pitillo is a jointâ to which I screamed âWhy do your people refer to it as Italian ice cream itâs a god damn popote what is wrong with all y'allâ and thatâs the night when we realized thereâs 11 different ways to say âstrawâ in Spanish
This reminds me of the time I (a Floridian) was in a voice chat with A New Yorker, A Texan, A Canadian, a Brit, an Aussie, and a Brazilian; and the Brazilian was the only one not having any trouble understanding what anyone was saying.
the gojo getou storyline makes me unhinged for so many reasons. it's told totally out of order. you meet getou's corpse first, then watch gojo kill him in the film after getou's gone insane, and then you see their friendship. that friendship that's just two teenagers and all it's fun chaos and conflicting ideals. then. toji happens. and both of them during this period were SO CLOSE to being the only ones who understood each other. so close to being able to see through one another-- "you haven't released your technique yet, have you? you've not slept either, and I bet you're not gonna sleep tonight either-" and "suguru... have you lose weight?" and yet their friendship, the trust between them, "after all, we're the strongest", was splitting at the seams the more what they could individually tolerate changed. gojo had awakening by himself, accepted himself as THE strongest, felt a little untouchable and so able to change things, was choosing teaching and facing the elders-- and getou's conflicting ideals and sacrifices in all his comparative powerlessness as missions by himself piled up sent him spiraling. the dam breaks and getou takes his own route and so becomes a wound gojo would hold onto for the rest of his life. a pain that would be weaponised against him. it's feels like such a flip from adult gojo being seemingly too cool, uncaring and childish, when in fact it's getou who treats their past friendship as some trivial teenage stuff, while gojo holds onto everything with deep regret, and later with deep betrayal at seeing getou's corpse used this way.

love love LOVE how this episode portrayed ellie and joel as a pair of feral cats that got picked up off the street and have a tag on their enclosure at the shelter that says "they are bonded and cannot be adopted separately"
i don't know who needs to hear this but if you ever wrote livejournal or fanfic dot net or even wattpad fic back in the day that you aren't totally embarrassed of....repost it on AO3 now. you don't have to actively write there now, use a different username even, but for archiving purposes it is so important. and with streaming and other things making older fandoms becoming popular again, newer fans are going to AO3 and not finding any of the wonderful history of the fandom. please if you see this and you don't write fanfic but you have a favorite on another site PLEASE tell them to repost it to AO3. not just so more people will see it but for posterity.
