american - national of the united states of america
north american - individual living in or a national of a country located on the continent of north america
south american - individual living in or a national of a country located on the continent of south america
canadian - definitionally, especially lately, person who does not fucking want to be called an american, because "american" in both canadian and american english has the semantic weight of "national of the united states of america"
and this is not, in fact, limited to english
amerískur - icelandic adjective for american (loanword, more on the slang side, bandarískur more often used)
ameríkani - icelandic noun describing a national of the united states of america
américain - french adjective or noun describing a national of the united states of america
you cannot brute force a sea change in multiple languages simply because you personally misunderstand the difference between etymology and semantics and also assume (in, hilariously, a very american-centric way) that the billion-plus individuals must have a closer connection to the concept of continent than they do to nationality or other regional identities. a catfish is not literally a cat. it is a completely random trick of language evolution that nationals of the united states of america are not called unitans or vespuccians. calm down and stop being irritating
I personally think USAmerican is dumb and largely performative, but this is also a dumb argument. The most widely spoken language in the western hemisphere is Spanish, and for them there is only a single American continent, folks from the US aren’t called Americans, and they are also Americans, as people that live on the continent of America.
It would be like if the EU monopolized the term “European” and only citizens of member states were recognized as being European, even though there are a number of countries in Europe that aren’t part of the EU. If those people complain about being left out, “it’s just a quirk of semantics” is a pretty dumb argument, especially when you’re appealing to languages not spoken in the region as a defense and intentionally leaving out the largest language spoken in the region

you guys have literally no idea how long ive been waiting for this like before tumblr (remember i joined in 2010) and around the same time or maybe a little before facebook my first "social media" was flickr (i was in a couple anime groups on there and would make 'oc edits'(for both myself and friends in those groups) in which id save random anime images from google and then open them up on paint or whatever and recolor the eyes/hair) (hence google images always having a source from this site + my curiosity being why i made an account here to begin with) and it was during that time on flickr that i originally tried getting into bleach after seeing ulq (but through reading the manga instead of watching the anime) except i think i only got to like chapter 13 before dropping it bc at some point i looked up when exactly he shows up and went something like man im not reading howevermanythefuckhundred chapters for one character. but that curiosity about him and to an extent the series in general never left me

idk why I decided to go with the manga when I've literally been pirating anime before even KissAnime was a thing (2012). Whether that was YouTube episodes cut into 3-4 parts or whatever search results actually gave me an episode, I was watching anime online already but fsr decided to go the manga route->dropped that soooo quickly->did not give the series another look until 2024

actually maybe i do think kishimoto is conscious that he's written a fascist military-industrial complex. i think he's super duper aware on some level lmao
this is something that i'm like...genuinely surprised is controversial or unrealized. especially with current events as they are now it's not hard to see how the entirety of the series has not coherent political stance despite being a heavily political manga with many many real life events/concepts/situations thrown in. that alone tells you kishimoto's leanings (neocon centrism). he's implicitly aware that various people can have various opinions, but because the central premise is "most of the status quo is actually okay because it just is" their feelings never amount to anything.
like you have naruto, who is deeply profoundly against pretty much everything happening throughout the entire manga for good reason (and no i don't consider taking sasuke back to "konoha" as him bootlicking for many obvious reasons) who is exactly poised to do those things, but never actually vocalizes things he would obviously need to change aside from "cooperation" and "peace". hes an abuse victim who never gets to shed the trauma of his abuse because that would be inconvenient for everyone else.
you have sasuke, who is a victim in every sense of the word who eventually comes to the very sound conclusion that "everything about this institution needs to be razed down" but somehow cannot pinpoint what exactly about the institution is wrong and how he would fix it. instead he comes up with a scheme that would cause more harm by mandating strife and power vacuums as a cover for his suicide...he turns a genocide survivor into a caricature of a radical with no real ideas who wants to destroy the world, like all right-wingers do. actually all the villains are like this -> human backstories with nonsensical revolutionary ideas.
even characters like tsunade who are disillusioned are convinced to come back to fight for change then are made unable to, and then when they are able to they just don't.
they live in a backwards hypocritical world where characters like tobirama are praised as heroes for inventing the shinobi system like the chunin exams, the anbu, closed off cities, the ninja academy, propagation of WMDs but then in boruto these are the few but exact things that are totally reformed/abolished. where kakashi is all about "never turning your back on a comrade" (aka humanity is not conditional) and then repeatedly turns his weapons on his student while convincing his other student of doing the same, and minato finally tells him to knock that shit off but only because obito came to the "good side"?!!!? the narrative also doesn't address the fact that "curse of hatred" is hypocritical propaganda which inherently makes madara a nonsensical character. i'm not even going to touch danzo and the 3rd hokage .
it's a very politically bleak manga which by the end forces you to accept things like "it's heroic to be willing to die for an idea at the hands of people who want your idea to fail" and "war is bad but necessary" (?????). not through the main characters, but through the fact that these ideas are just espoused throughout the manga and never really corrected by anyone. and if they are called out, nothing ever comes out of that call out.

also the my brother was watching the part where neji dies last night and i would only half pay attention (was only out there bc i was eating dinner) but he literally says he did it to protect hinata. his entire introduction is about his destiny being nothing else but to be a slave to protect the main hyuga branch (hinata) before naruto is like noooooo.......... make youre own destiny.............. and then his destiny is to die on hinata's behalf anyway.
i wish naruto wasnt so tightly embedded into the cervices of my brain bc like. naruto sucks!!!!!!!!! hes a terrible main character!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! stop sucking up to konoha and maintaining the status quo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! konoha has blood on its hands and it is never actually confronted. naruto himself was failed by the village and instead of Doing Something About It, surely if he just proves himself worthy enough to it he will be accepted and everything will be okay. we just need to put different, good people in charge while changing absolutely nothing about the system itself, trust me this will fix everything :)

Ok reddit naruto fans hate sasuke for all the most obvious reasons (emo and gay) but also it's literally because he isn't utterly humiliated and knocked down out of his undeserved altar of ego by naruto's all encompassing superiority like the shounen formula rquires
Like sasuke was pushing it from the start far before he did anything immoral a lot of male fans already disliked him by the chuunin exams just because girls preferred him to naruto in canon and people still scramble to justify why his wins don’t really count as wins, in a way they don’t with literally any other character in the show. This is them retroactively trying to put sasuke “in his place” because it’s the only way the story makes sense to them. What grinds them is that even when sasuke says he loses, he still wins. The actual fight is a tie (because naruto is nerfed by his feelings for sasuke, but lol let's be real it doesn’t make it less aggravating for people who want naruto to come out on top), and him “losing” is literally him… accepting love and companionship lol. It’s barely even an ideological battle, because the only real rebuttal naruto gives to sasuke insisting the villages can only be united by force is that sasuke is “trying to be alone” and he “won’t let him”. That’s literally all it comes down to. Sasuke could’ve decimated konoha and people would still love him so long as he was put in his place via a genuinely humiliating defeat, Sakura getting over him and "choosing" Naruto, and he was demoted to a stupid fuckass side character who showed up occasionally to be badass, but never quite as badass as naruto lol. The purpose of the rival or foil is to provide a contrast that proves beyond a doubt how correct the mc is but it becomes more complicated with someone like sasuke
Once when I was in undergrad, someone described something as “problematic” in class and our professor was like, “That’s cool, but ‘problematic’ doesn’t really mean anything. It means that the thing you’re describing has a problem, and in and of itself that’s not bad. Art, especially, should always have problems, or else it’s not interesting and not art, either. It sounds like you’re trying to say that this is bad, but you don’t want to say ‘bad.’ Is that right?”
So from then on whenever one of us called something problematic, he would make us talk it out until we could name the “bad” thing we were hinting at. In this particular class, 7/10 it was some type of oppression, and the remainder was like, “I’m uncomfortable because this is very new/confusing/pushing boundaries that made me feel safe.”
Once we stopped calling things “problematic” and stopping at that, class got way more interesting and... we all had to say, like, “that’s racist” or “that’s misogynistic” or “ew capitalism gross” out loud, which a lot of us had never done in a classroom before. Or we had to be like, “Uhhh... I’m not sure what’s so bad?” and confront our own beliefs and that was maybe even more useful.
Anyway. Whenever I see the word problematic, I can’t help but think of this professor being like, “Good starting point, now let’s get specific.” I think when we have to commit to saying “that’s ___” it requires a lot more careful thought about the truth and impact and complexities of whatever we’re claiming. Sometimes there really is some bullshit afoot, and also sometimes it’s art, and it should be full of problems, because that’s what art is.
