Moby Dick (Herman Melville, 1851)
Why everyone should go see the Robert Wilson Moby Dick adaptation
I have not stopped thinking about it since I first saw it, in October of 2024. So, here goes nothing.
Robert Wilson is a famous theatre set designer, lighting artist and director. His most recent, and last play, at the D’haus (Düsseldorf State Theatre) was an adaptation of Moby Dick.
To be exact, a rock-opera, in collaboration with Anna Calvi, who also scored Der Sandmann (iykyk!).
Ever since i have seen that play, i was sent into an artistic spiral, here’s why:
Wilson ist primarily a visual artist. His choices break down the plot of the book to very few iconic visual and textual impressions, conveyed in black and white. The costuming and make-up reflect this, giving the entire production an otherworldly feeling. The characters are dressed up and directed to move like dolls. Watching this play feels like being a child again, trying to digest something you couldn’t quite grasp. A sweet little nightmare, not unlike Coraline or some of Del Toros or Tim Burtons work. Although, it is hard to compare Wilsons theatre to anything.
The lighting and stage work captures the melancholic vibe of the book perfectly, where it cuts away on the plot. Avid readers of the book will not find it exactly replicated on stage, but illustrated.
This will prove an advantage, because you don't have to speak German to enjoy it.
Instead of lots of text, there is-
MUSIC.
Anna Calvi composed a rock and pop infused, addictive (english) score to the play. The songs have potential to become any theatre kids hyperfixation, and any parents nightmare. I know certain pieces will haunt my neighbours and family to the grave. Instead of nasal belting, expect sea shanties with a lot of falsetto, and also moaning. You can download some of it legally on the D’haus Presseaudio Website, but it is not officially released.
Wilson added a whimsical POV character
„The boy“ is a character portrayed by the talented Christopher Nell, who accompanies Ishmael in narrating the story. He adds a layer of comic relief and, ultimately, deep feeling- Don’t ask, go see it. It is up for interpretation whether he is a stand-in for the whale itself, Pip, or even a young viewer who is bored. I’m sure you can come up with your own idea that makes me spiral further. Do tell me about it.
Ahab is a woman.
And not just any woman, but Rosa Enskat. Having studied pop music and jazz, she lends this role her beautiful voice and playful on-stage charm. When I say tumblr would have a field day with this one. Enskat’s Ahab is the Onceler for lesbians. And that is where language leaves me.
Yearning ft. Starbuck
Heiko Raulins Starbuck is insane work. In every sense of the word. Whoever has seen him in multiple things will agree that he puts his all into every character, and every performance.
Also, student tickets are eight bucks.
As of Jan. 2026, there are still monthly performances in Düsseldorf, and a handful of performances in NYC. Tickets usually sell out a month in advance.
Off you go, then.
Das Problem ist, dass Heiko Raulin und Rosa Enskat folgenden Rollen spielen:
Alfred Ill & Claire Zachanassian
Starbuck & Kapitän Ahab
Einfach zu perfekt.
