● Orion grew up in Seattle, in an ordinary family, being particularly close to their brother who was their best friend. Their parents weren’t very involved in their upbringing, causing the siblings to develop their own ways of dealing with the things they got thrown at them in life.

● Where Theon was loud and aggressive most of the time, Orion was more of an introvert, creating a habit out of bottling things up and preferring the universes of the many books and movies they collected over reality.

● Remaining innocent, gentle and childlike as they grew older, Orion quickly became a target for bullies, which lasted throughout the entirety of their high school experience, their only escape found in the drama club and the stories they held so dear as a child.

● As they went through puberty, they started to struggle with their gender identity, which added to their insecurities. It didn’t take long for them to sink deep into a depression, their lowest point being the months in which they started to have suicidal thoughts. Still, they kept up their smile, refusing to let anyone see how bad they were feeling.

● They moved out after turning 18, practically fleeing to New York, desperate to leave their toxic environment behind. However, they also left their beloved brother behind, for Orion was convinced he deserved to have his own life, rather than having to keep trying to fix his brother’s.

●  They discovered their power while taking in an injured kitten, watching the animal heal in their hands. Orion felt conflicted about having a power, because they realized they should turn themselves in, but decided against it, aware they could make a difference and help other people.

● Orion found guidance in the form of Violetta Jones, who helped them control and expand their ability, ultimately offering them a job at the hospital, which Orion gladly accepted. That same day, they pledged alliance to the Heroes.

● These days, Orion lives alone with the cat they accidentally healed, working long hours at the hospital in order to deal with the guilt of having an ability and still conjuring up the energy to keep their warm smile on their face, no matter how miserable they might feel.

↪ CONNECTIONS

→ THEON MARIN // BROTHER Though the Marin siblings were once each other’s best friends, their clashing personalities drove them apart. Orion continuously regrets leaving Theon with their parents, but did it in the belief he was better off that way. If you ask Theon, he’ll probably tell you he doesn’t care how Orion is doing. However, the two still love each other unconditionally and although Orion despises violence, they would hurt anyone who would harm their brother.

→ NAVEEN KAMDAR // BOYFRIEND The two met on Christmas day, Orion inviting a complete stranger over for a movie and a cup of tea. The invite was impulsive and could have been a disaster, but the two got along amazingly well from the start, quickly discovering similar interests and easily accepting each others quirks. The chemistry was undeniable. Two months later, on Valentine’s Day, they finally got official. However, Orion is hesitant to admit out loud that they’re actually in love, too afraid Naveen will realize he deserves much better and will break their heart.

“So was Chairman Mao Zedong,” Willa answered, and she was being callous, but she wasn’t wrong. When a person hurt more lives than they helped, and in such an grave and unforgivable manner, they didn’t deserve the help Orion could provide. Practically, you could consider Orion’s ability to be a limited resource; any decent human being would want that resource to be used on the ailing innocent and not on any bleeding criminal Orion happened upon. Besides, suppose that man went on to rape a dozen (hell, even just one or two) women. If Orion discovered that, she would feel awful. It seemed her gift was a double-edged sword, in this scenario. “He killed about sixty million people, who were still people. Would you have saved him, too?”

It wasn’t the time for an ethical debate, certainly. However, Willa was even less equipped to deal with emotional trauma than usual. She would feel guilty for that, after a minute or two. In that moment, it seemed most useful to reform a manner of thinking that was far too idealistic for the world in which those two peculiar and empowered women lived. Each decision had to be carefully measured, to the best of a person’s ability. It made no difference, what sort of power you had. If you could kill, or if you could save lives, you ought to do it with discretion. At least, that was Willa’s view, no matter what kind of mind she was in.

She released Orion, sensing the discomfort and strain. All at once, Willa understood that Orion didn’t want to be touched, and why, and that she wasn’t helping much at all anymore. She looked down at the dark pavement, arms rigidly at her sides, and gave an unhappily minor, glissando hum. The rain was still coming, but Willa hardly registered it. She hardly registered Orion’s thanks, either. Something was eating at her mind, distracting her with spots of colour and smell. A memory. Now also wasn’t the time for remembering something, and especially not something foul. As it came, it felt foul, like acid rising up her throat.

She didn’t feel at all well. Orion didn’t, either, and Willa wanted nothing more than to know what was the right thing to do to best help her. Getting home would be a start, she knew, but then what? Would Orion need to speak with someone? Someone who was a little more capable of understanding and responding than Willa was? There was that friend of hers, the one Willa had met only briefly… Or would she prefer to be alone? Even if she did prefer that, would it be best to leave her alone? Once there was someone, then what? Food? Would Orion eat or drink anything? Would Willa be able to make anything for her to eat or drink? Then what? Did Orion get to forget this, after a while? After a day? After a week? After a month? Did she have to remember it, and be frightened, and sad, and taken, and hurt, and unsafe, forever? Is that how people work? Their worst memories sneak up on them over and over, and they’re never rid of them for good?

All of these questions, along with a few more, occurred to Willa near simultaneously. The order was much more screwy and less sensible than the way I wrote it out for you. Her thoughts were a blurry mess all the time, but even more so when her adrenaline was pumping as furiously as it was now. She wouldn’t calm down until sleep found her, hours and hours from that moment. “I d-do … I do not know what to do, Orion. I am sorry.”

Orion pursed her lips. She knew Willa was right, but this wasn’t someone who had killed millions of people. And though there was no excuse for his actions, she knew she would never be able to forgive herself if she’d just left him like that. Broken and in so much pain. She’d felt it, perhaps even more than he had because he’d lost consciousness rather quickly. Which was fucked up on its own, because Willa hadn’t wanted to hurt Orion, had saved her from more hurt. Part of her wondered how long it would have taken for the man to realize there were no female parts for him to discover and what his reaction would have been. Though wondering about that almost gave her an anxiety attack and made her stomach twist.

She felt sick, but kept quiet, unable to think of a response to her friend’s statement and question. It wasn’t like she was too proud to admit that Willa was right, it was just not something she wanted to talk about. She didn’t regret healing him and she’d frankly only done it to clear her own conscience. She understood Willa was upset and angry and didn’t approve of helping people who didn’t deserve it after what they had done, but she wouldn’t apologize for her actions.

When Willa let go of her, she hated how relieved she felt. She usually loved hugs, loved to be close to people, but right now she just wanted to feel the rain, praying it would wash away the disgusting, awful feeling she was experiencing. She wanted to speak again, wanted to apologize for the mess she had gotten into, wanted to force herself to wrap her arms around Willa again because she felt awful for not wanting to be touched, which didn’t make much sense and felt like a big contradiction between her head and her body. She wrapped her arms around herself again, unable to find the right words to express how she was feeling other than exhausted, dirty and thankful, all at once.

Orion bit her bottom lip and looked down at her hands as if she was trying to recognize them as her own. “Don’t-- Don’t be sorry.” Her voice cracked and she swallowed hard, still refusing to break down in the middle of the street. “You don’t have to do anything. We-- We should get you inside before you catch a cold.” It was a bullshit excuse, because even if Willa caught a cold, Orion could fix it within seconds, but all she wanted was to get home and sleep. Maybe when she’d wake up, it would all just turn out to have been a bad dream.

Willa frowned, nose wrinkling. She didn’t answer Orion’s question, opting instead to ask her own. “Why would you heal him? He will harm someone else.”

She looked at him through the dirty, rain-speckled glass, partly disgusted with him and partly apathetic. He was a shadow of the monsters she had faced and bested, or the one she felt she had become. The stronger monsters were troublesome, terrifying even, but she hated these ones more. She felt the most contempt for these ones, who had to by their nature prey on the weak and the innocent and the kind. At the very least, more sophisticated beasts tended to kill and harm their like. “He is a menace. You wouldn’t see him harmed?”

Willa’s expression didn’t change when Orion commented on her lack of shoes, because generally, she didn’t talk much when she was like this. She taunted, responded to one biting comment with her own, and didn’t know what to do with concern. Especially seeing how trivial concern for Willa’s feet seemed. Surely, she reasoned, Orion said and focused on such a thing, vocally at least, to distract herself or Willa from their own well-being and mental-state. Who cares if Willa was barefoot, Orion had just been attacked, violated, assaulted. Such ugly words, Willa thought, as she matched pace with her shaken friend. Hadn’t Orion sobbed a moment ago? A creeping anxiety pinched her thoughts, which surprised her some, because a slip was seldom so brief. However, it seemed a regular Willa was better equipped to show concern, just as she was better equipped to receive it. Essentially useless in every other matter, but that was fine.

Willa blinked, and the world was starry again and filled with fog. She slowed her walking, trying to remember exactly what was happening. It was awaking from a dream, but enough parts of it were left now, Orion’s flittering nerves, the wet of her hair, that she had managed to seize the gist. “Wait,” She whispered, shaking her head. “No, wait, Orion. W–”

Then Willa was crying too, because Orion was crying, because someone had hurt her friend. She ran forward and took Orion’s sleeve, pulling her to a stop. After a moment, and a sputtered couple vowels, Willa pressed her head into her shoulder and hugged her. She was confused, sad, angry. Words had a way of disagreeing with Willa in times such as these, so she cried, managing more vowels and a couple dangling pronouns. Most prominently, “How…?”

 Orion wasn’t sure how to reply to Willa’s question. It was a habit, an instinct, practically a vow she had made to herself to never abandon someone who was hurt. Whether it was someone innocent or something who had just tried to rob her of her own innocence. Sometimes it was hard for her to distinguish her morals from her own needs. Because she hadn’t felt sorry for him while Willa was unleashing her powers on him, hadn’t felt regret about getting out of the car without checking if he was okay. Honestly, she felt like he did deserve to be hurt and to be stopped from ever trying such a thing again. But not that violently, not that severely.

“He’s still a person.” She eventually spoke, but her voice sounded alien to her, like she wasn’t completely there. She didn’t want to think about what just happened. She’d been tired and stressed enough before all of this and was mostly traumatized by the fact that she had been betrayed by someone she had put her trust in. Trusting people was something she valued, she didn’t like it when others warned her about strangers. Because wasn’t she a stranger to those people as well? And she wouldn’t like it if someone brushed her off because they thought they couldn’t trust her.

Of course, Orion was a special case with quite a childlike mindset, who would rather spend a day sitting on a swing set than think about the future. Her belief in the world and everyone in it was probably her best asset and her worst flaw. Living in a fictional world she made up in her own mind was what guided her through life. No matter how often her brother tried to wake her up, she remained stubborn -- too afraid to face reality and fall back into the darkness of depression.

She had her arms wrapped tightly around herself, while she ignored the pain in her tired legs and kept walking, just wanting to get home. The rain was still soaking her clothes and hair, but it actually helped her to feel less dirty. Her jaw was clenched and she was glad she wasn’t wearing heels or else she would have tripped over her own feet. She tried hard to keep herself together, tried really hard not to cry. She couldn’t tell if she’d rather take a shower or just curl up on her bed as soon as she got home. Maybe she’d curl up in the shower.

Then someone grabbed her sleeve and she nearly gave in to her instinct to almost aggressively pull away, realizing just in time it was Willa who had taken a hold of her. She forced herself to stay still, though she really wanted to keep on walking. The hug was unexpected and Orion could feel herself freeze in the embrace. Seconds ago she had thought a hug was what she needed most, but now that someone was actually hugging her, she realized it really wasn’t.

Willa’s question didn’t make much sense, but Orion managed to force her arms to wrap themselves around her friend. She swallowed thickly, her voice sounding strained as she still tried to hold back the inevitable breakdown that was building up inside of her, making her chest ache. “Thank you for-- If you hadn’t shown up, I don’t-- Thank you..”

humans are so cute, when we say goodbye we put our arms around each other and to show we love someone we bring them flowers. we say hello by holding each other’s hand, and sometimes tiny little dewdrops form in our eyes. for pleasure we listen to arrangements of sounds, press our lips together, smoke dried leaves, get drunk off of old fruit. we’re all just little animals, falling in love and having breakfast beneath billions of stars :~)

Willa flinched away, wisps of white swimming in her eyes. “Do not,” She said firmly, putting her arms up. It would spill out and into Orion, if she wasn’t careful. Although she had little concept of caring for anyone save herself in this state, she wasn’t without foresight. She had come here to help Orion, meaning that eventually, she would regret hurting her. Willa closed her eyes, pushing out the detailed world. “I don’t need to be comforted.”

When Willa was like this, everything was so incredibly clear. She could hear, see, smell her surrounding environment distinctly, and each piece of information spiraled off into connective conclusions, and those offered more information, more implication, and it was loud and quick and constant. She shut the car door, and was feeling better now. She ran her fingers through her wet hair, pulling it back and out of her face. She took a look at Orion’s frantic, quivering nerves, and sighed, willing her eyes to open again. The white had gone, and her vision didn’t flicker. She studied Orion’s features, interpreting them.

Orion wasn’t all right. She needed shelter, rest and reassurance. Willa nodded, reaching out a hand. “Come on. We should go, yes? Are you all right?”

Orion pulled back her hand, holding it against her chest where she could feel her heart beating frantically in her chest. She clenched her jaw and averted her gaze, not sure how to feel. She kind of understood Willa was protecting her from herself, but then she stated she didn’t need to be comforted and Orion started to doubt her own thoughts. Maybe Willa was angry with her, or disgusted.

She leaned back against the cold surface of the car, willing her legs not to give in underneath her, while she adjusted her clothes and then wrapped her arms around herself. A quiet sob escaped her lips before she could stop it, tears spilling down her cheeks. She bowed down her head, hiding her face behind red curls, while she wrapped her arms tighter around herself as if it would help her to keep herself from falling apart. She wasn’t sure if she needed a hug or didn’t want to be touched at all, her head was still spinning and trying to comprehend what had just happened. People would most likely argue it was her own fault for being so trusting, but Orion didn’t see it that way. There was nothing wrong with trusting people, right?

She was shaken out of her thoughts by the sound of the car door falling shut. Staring at Willa’s hand for a moment, she eventually shook her head and pushed herself back onto her feet, opening the door again. She couldn’t leave him like this, even if he had lost his way. She reached out, immediately regretting her actions as the pain surged through her head and body the moment she touched the male’s hand -- the same hand that had been groping her minutes ago.

Stepping out of the car and closing the door behind her, she couldn’t help but look at her friend with an expression of worry on her face. “What-- What did you do to him?” She asked. She’d fixed it, as far as she could with the little energy she had left in her body. He was most likely not entirely fine, but it had been too severe and too painful and to be fair he kind of deserved it. “You’re not wearing shoes... You could catch a cold.” She said, shaking her head.

She started walking, her legs shaky and her arms wrapped around her body once again. She didn’t want to answer the question as to if she was alright, because she really wasn’t. She couldn’t tell if she was still in shock or just too busy trying not to break down in the middle of the street. “Let’s go home.”

Willa loved the rain. She was sitting on the dark, hardwood floor cross-legged, staring out Orion’s window. Time had slipped away from her and she wasn’t sure how long she had been sitting there. With her thoughts to entertain her, she could easily sit still, making no noise at all for hours. However, it had only been a few minutes today. When the rain had started, Willa had slid off the couch, settling onto the cool floor. Idly, she drummed her fingers on her knee. She was at an angle that kept her from seeing even the tops of the highest buildings, leaving only a grey, deep blue gradient behind the water-speckled windowpane. As more water hit the glass, the patterns streamed and changed, and the sounds of rain filled the small living room.

Now, I’d like you to imagine a spiderweb. A large one, with strands of silk interlacing each other. When an insect is caught in the edges of the web, the spider can feel it from the center. The insect’s frantic movements make the strands its touching vibrate. Willa’s ability is like that. Within her consider range, she can feel the vibrations. The stronger the emotions are, the more vibrations they make. As you might imagine, this is distracting. There are too many people feeling too many things all at once. Bliss, rage, depression. They sing to her, and she doesn’t bother trying to pick one voice out from the others. Not usually. However, she could choose to be sensitive toward particular lights. Like Orion’s, for example. Willa had chosen to keep her mind rested up against the strand of silk that tethered Orion to her.

When fear flared in Orion’s brain, Willa felt it. Her head snapped to the side and toward her. She was a couple blocks away, and frightened. Panic shook through and toward Willa, who was up and running for the door, down the stairs, into the dreary night. She could make out the lights beside Orion, touching her, violence in his head. She ran, unaware of the rain, unaware of the rough pavement under her bare feet. Orion was in trouble. No, Orion was in danger, and Willa wouldn’t stand for that. She ran as fast as she could, closing the distance between herself and her friend.

“Watch it!” Shouted a disgruntled man as Willa shoved her way past him. He stopped and stared after her, the strange, sopping girl in loose pants and a tee, sprinting through a forest of coats and umbrellas before rounding a corner. Then she was out of his sight. She kept running, willing herself to move faster and to take longer strides. Then she was there, chest heaving and heart wild. It had taken her a little under ten minutes. Too long, I’m sure you’ll agree, just as Willa did. She couldn’t aim her powers from afar, they would have posed too much of a risk to Orion.

She pulled open the driver’s side door, and the offending man sat upright, turning his head. Willa thrust her hand forward into the car, her palm pressing into and against the man’s face. Immediately, he began to scream. Willa wrapped her other arm around his neck, hugging herself closer to him and smushing her hand against his face, even as he flailed wildly. His voice rose steadily higher in pitch as Willa crushed and twisted his nerve cells, bearing down so viciously that some of the lights in his head fizzled and were blotted out, never to shine again. By the time she let him lose consciousness, the man had permanently lost his ability hear, smell, and move his left hand.

Willa had slipped. She had to, to cope with doing something like that, even to someone hateful and hurtful. She stepped back and away from the car, and her breathing was laboured, but the threat was gone. All that was left was a group of familiar, skittering lights, and even in this altered state, Willa knew better than to touch those. Instead, she stood rigidly in the dark and the rain, reigning in her frantic energies. She had touched the man to ensure his lights were the only ones affected, but her energy was flowing now, filling her up to bursting. She snarled, but otherwise said nothing.

It was the oddest and most terrifying experience. Her instincts were telling her to kick and punch and push and scream, but her body refused to get violent. There was no anger, just fear. The panic was close to paralyzing her, but she fought against it, knowing fully well what would happen if she allowed it to take over. He’d be able to do whatever he wanted if she gave up fighting. And this was not how things were supposed to happen. She hadn’t been fighting to gain confidence, for some sick stranger to take it all away again.

She kept pushing his hands away, flailing her legs as she tried to get out from underneath the weight of his body that was pinning her down. Her right hand desperately searching for the door handle, while her left went back and forth between pushing against the man’s chest and prying his hands off of her body. When she gave up on finding the door handle, it was solely because one hand wasn’t effective enough against the man’s attempts to undo her pants. “Stop! Please!” Tears ran down her cheeks, mingling with the wetness of the rain on her skin, then sliding into her hair.

She kept trashing against his forceful attempts to take off her pants, until a punch to her stomach left her gasping for air and momentarily disabled her from fighting back. He pulled down her pants, pushed up her shirt, the same wicked smile on his face as she put his hands on her. By now, Orion had resorted to using her nails to claw at his arms and hands, her breathing choked by quiet sobs. As the man sat up to undo his own pants, Orion took her chance and managed to kick him in the crotch, but her legs were too weak to really do any damage.

The stranger got furious, though. Closing one hand around her throat as the other started groping between her legs, Orion couldn’t do anything but let out a strangled whine. She reached out to hit her hand against the window, praying for someone to come save her, but she couldn’t breathe properly and he tightened his fingers around her throat to slowly choke the fight out of her. “Please... I’m... I’m... not...” She wasn’t even sure what she wanted to say. She wasn’t a woman, she wasn’t ready, she wasn’t his. But she was tired, so tired. Tiny lights started to blur her vision, so she just closed her eyes, while her hands desperately kept trying to push him away. But she could feel her body getting weaker, the longer her oxygen got cut off by the hand that gripped tightly around her throat. This was it. She would never see her family again, would never see Naveen again, would never be able to say goodbye to anyone she cared about.

And then there was screaming, but it couldn’t be her. The grip around her throat disappeared and she coughed while she gasped for air. Her head hurt, but she forced her eyes open, wanting to see what was going on. The scene was terrifying, she could see the look on Willa’s face as she unleashed her powers onto her attacker. Later she would try to understand who Willa had found her here, but now she was still disorientated and still very much pinned down underneath the man who was undoubtedly in a lot of pain. Though for once in her life, Orion couldn’t bring herself to care too much.

Then it was over. It was quiet, apart from Orion’s coughing and Willa’s heavy breathing. She managed to push the man off of her, pull up her pants and stumble out of the car, though her legs felt like jelly and she was still feeling dizzy. She leaned against the car for a moment, trying to catch her breath and stop her head from spinning. Carefully she took a couple of steps, using the car to keep her balance while she made her way over to the other side where her friend was standing. She hesitantly reached out to touch Willa’s cheek. “Hey... Hey, look at me, love. It’s okay.” She tried her hardest not to cry, making her voice sound choked up, though she tried to keep her voice sounding as calm and gentle as possible.

It was one of those days. Days on which things seemed to go wrong all at once and everything just gradually got worse as the hours progressed. Orion was tired, both physically and mentally drained. It took a lot out of her to keep up her smile and fake energy after a long shift at work. True, they’d told her to go home and get some rest five hours ago, but she had insisted on staying to help out. The underground shelter was short on staff and if there was anything Orion was good at, it was at giving, at being kind, at being patient. She wanted to be sure everyone was fed and healthy, wanted to make sure no one was scared or upset. She spent hours just looking after kids that weren’t her own. But she loved doing it.

Truthfully, though, she was just looking for a distraction. Naveen had been gone for a while now and they hadn’t spoken in a while. Orion knew he’d come back, but there was this nagging voice in her head telling her he’d found a better life and wouldn’t miss her. Part of her hoped that if he had found a better life, he would come and get her to join him, but she knew that wasn’t going to happen, either. Besides, how could she leave her job and friends?

Apart from being conflicted about Naveen’s absence, there were also the nightmares she was having regularly, which were mainly flashbacks to the horror she had witnessed at the coffee shop, where Carlos had tried to burn some innocent man’s face off. That, and the fact that she had exposed herself in front of at least twenty people, caused her many sleepless nights. At this point, she was running solely on coffee and will-power, which wasn’t very easy.

Naturally, as soon as she was about a block away from the hospital, having decided to walk home, the rain started to fall down, quickly soaking her sore and exhausted body. Seattle should have taught her to always bring an umbrella, but she couldn’t bring herself to care. Blinking against the mascara that got into her eyes and blurred her vision, while simultaneously trying to brush strands of her soaked red hair out of her face. She silently cursed the thin clothes that were sticking to her trembling body, her coat back at the hospital where it was providing warmth to a homeless woman.

Groaning softly, she tried to find shelter next to a store, positive no one wanted a soaked person to stumble into their business. She leaned against the wall, which didn’t exactly give her hurting legs a break, but at least it kept her out of the rain for a moment. It was then that a car stopped, the open window revealing a man she didn’t recognize. “Need a ride?” He asked. Orion bit her lip, looking down the street for a moment. “I’m-- I’m just on my way home.” She managed awkwardly. The man smirked and motioned for her to get into the car. “I’ll take care of you, don’t worry.”

Before she could register what was happening, the other was on top of her and trying to force her down, his hands groping places she really didn’t want to be touched. “Please, don’t.” She begged, her voice breaking while she tried harder to push the stranger off of her. “It’s just so sad. But because they were too powerful, Zeus split them in half and scattered them across the Earth, so they would be away from their other half. Basically, it implies we will only be complete once we have found our other half, therefore it’s the origin of love. Of course, I don’t believe there’s just one person for everyone, but it’s still a nice story.” She rambled on. “How is violence recommended? If it’s a perfect world, why would you want to harm or destroy anything?” She wondered out loud. Of course, it was all virtual, but she couldn’t see the point of violence in any world. “You could teach me? I’m not sure if I’d like that. I mean, I really appreciate the offer, but I fear I’ll just look stupid and will get on your nerves as well.”
