additional things about this:
- the john lookalike is characterized as stubborn. he is “refusing to back down” and goes in with the intent to disprove all of this “nonsense”. and then it Gets him.
- forgot to add it to the original post, but as someone pointed out in the reblogs, we see the door number is 414. unordinary has a history of using door numbers as a hint towards future chapters (notably, the safe house # + the sera/john fight but there may be others)
- “there have even been times when visitors have gone missing.” SIMON. simon (pi hired by william) visits jane and is killed for this. of course, william is also killed even though he didn’t directly visit her, but he looked. if you see her or set out to find her, you die.
- the hands have pointed nails to look like the flame claws. the next bit of this i could be reading too closely but the way it “bruises” john-like right after the squeeze makes me think it’s supposed to look more like burn marks instead.
- again, could be reading too much, but i think you could also say something about the use of strangulation. not only because it allows for the above visuals, but because jane’s current life is very… well, suffocating. she’s confined (as far as we know) to one location that she will never be able to leave. her access to information/the outside world is cut off and she has no way to know if they’re lying to her. she is exclusively shown wearing a hospital gown she is (presumably) not allowed to customize or trade in. does she even have any personal possessions or keepsakes? she thinks she’s there by her own decision, but what kind of choice is “do this or your family dies?” from beginning to end, what jane actually wants is squeezed out of her and her environment. it’s likely they are also literally taking her blood to make the amps/artificial abilities/god knows what else. we know the amps contain traces of dna and if doc can use john’s blood to make a cure for the disabler. then, well.
- the bloody hands is a cool visual. i don’t necessarily think it’s intended to have deeper meaning or anything here but it is a classic horror thing that fits nicely as they are symbolism aside literally listening to a creepy story. i just think they’re neat…
- i do think it’s interesting that uru uses a ghost story specifically, when jane haunts the narrative and john is/becomes a spectre.
that’s all for now but it’s very possible i forgot something or will find a new and exciting way to be unwell about this scene in the future! so.
