i know evie’s ghost story in ch. 254 isn’t the most subtle thing in the world but goddamn does it work. guy who looks just like our protag viewing a mirror to see a woman who looks just like his mother.

like ohh my god. if someone were to ask me off of the top of my head if i had a favorite panel this one would instantly jump to mind. its so wonderfully haunting to me

additional things about this:

- the john lookalike is characterized as stubborn. he is “refusing to back down” and goes in with the intent to disprove all of this “nonsense”. and then it Gets him.

- forgot to add it to the original post, but as someone pointed out in the reblogs, we see the door number is 414. unordinary has a history of using door numbers as a hint towards future chapters (notably, the safe house # + the sera/john fight but there may be others)

- “there have even been times when visitors have gone missing.” SIMON. simon (pi hired by william) visits jane and is killed for this. of course, william is also killed even though he didn’t directly visit her, but he looked. if you see her or set out to find her, you die.

- the hands have pointed nails to look like the flame claws. the next bit of this i could be reading too closely but the way it “bruises” john-like right after the squeeze makes me think it’s supposed to look more like burn marks instead.

- again, could be reading too much, but i think you could also say something about the use of strangulation. not only because it allows for the above visuals, but because jane’s current life is very… well, suffocating. she’s confined (as far as we know) to one location that she will never be able to leave. her access to information/the outside world is cut off and she has no way to know if they’re lying to her. she is exclusively shown wearing a hospital gown she is (presumably) not allowed to customize or trade in. does she even have any personal possessions or keepsakes? she thinks she’s there by her own decision, but what kind of choice is “do this or your family dies?” from beginning to end, what jane actually wants is squeezed out of her and her environment. it’s likely they are also literally taking her blood to make the amps/artificial abilities/god knows what else. we know the amps contain traces of dna and if doc can use john’s blood to make a cure for the disabler. then, well.

- the bloody hands is a cool visual. i don’t necessarily think it’s intended to have deeper meaning or anything here but it is a classic horror thing that fits nicely as they are symbolism aside literally listening to a creepy story. i just think they’re neat…

- i do think it’s interesting that uru uses a ghost story specifically, when jane haunts the narrative and john is/becomes a spectre.

that’s all for now but it’s very possible i forgot something or will find a new and exciting way to be unwell about this scene in the future! so.

You know, for someone who loved being in control (of the situation, control in general) and at this moment, probably loves being in control at the moment, he is being controlled by the person that he trusts most. Someone he (wrongfully) admires.

I can't wait for the moment it all crashes on him, the moment he realizes, that he was never in control.

The parallel of Arlo saying, "It’s all up to them (John, Sera, and the trio) now," in the s2p2 recap and John saying, "He's (Arlo's) always been one of us," in 366 is just... so striking.

John sees all six as an "us" and thinks of Arlo as a necessary member. (I don’t ship Jarlo, but that line really makes me see the appeal). Right before our eyes, John went from "us" (him and potentially Sera) vs "them" (the hierarchy, represented by Arlo) to "us" (the main six, including Arlo) vs "them" (the authorities and the injustice in the world).

Arlo sees the other five as a group, one that can go on without him because, well, he was never all that close with them anyway. He didn't really have any friends throughout s2, what with Rei dead, Remi mad at him for being in the authorities, Blyke and Isen siding with Remi, John being John, and Sera wrapped up in Spectre stuff. He doesn't realize that to the rest of the main cast, he's part of the group. I think, when they come for him and he gets his memory back (in whichever order that happens) he's going to be very surprised that they even bothered.

how do we feel about the idea that the reason isen is so glad about john being back with them (besides the obvious boon of having another god-tier on your roster and just generally not wanting one of your classmates to die) is because, to put it rather bluntly, john being there means that their choice to go back wasn’t a complete disaster. like can you imagine if they lost blyke and arlo and john still ended up dying on them. to be honest i think isen’s just glad he’s not living in that timeline
