Eye Magic

Eye magic is only wielded by starbinders in addition to one of the other three types. This magic is associated with the spirit and the highest levels of intuition. It requires a great deal of skill to master and is so taxing on the user that they’re unable to hold all of it by themselves. Therefore, starbinders each have a Lume, which keeps some of it for them. 

Eye magic has its own extra elemental affinity: gravity–a combination of space and time.

Other Eye magic abilities include:

Teleporting

Seeing the future

Extremely powerful methods of secret-keeping

Shapeshifting into another person or body-switching with them

The screbes of starbinders who wield magic are still made of one of the other 3 main materials (stone, metal, or wood, depending on the person’s other dominant moon), but they also include veins of crystal or resin.

Heart Magic

Heart magic is associated with the user’s emotions and is primarily healing in nature. Heart mage abilities are a bit more stratified depending on their affinities and there are fewer commonly shared traits among them. These are water and wood (plants), with two additional minor subsets: blood and empathy. Every Heart mage has one of each category.

Blood mages are better with healing and treating physical injuries, while empathy mages (also called “empaths”) are better with mental ones. Where blood mages might be able to meld skin back together, empaths can provide hypnotism or a temporary state of mental stasis for someone in shock. One universal limit, however, is the inability to cure disease. This is because microorganisms, tumors, etc are living things and to exert one’s willpower over something living is an ancient, dark art.

Heart mage screbes are made of wood.

Mind Magic

Mind magic is associated with the user’s willpower and mental stamina. It tends to be primarily defensive in nature. Its elemental affinities are ice, light, shadow, and earth (stone and metal, NOT plants). 

Other abilities of Mind mages include:

Conjuring forcefields

Changing the durability, density, or material of the body.

Commanding illusions 

Telepathy OR telekinesis (the same individual may not have both)

Making others understand them or making themselves understood, regardless of language barriers

The screbes of mind mages are made of metal.

Hand Magic

Hand magic is associated with the user’s physical, bodily capabilities and tends to be more offensively oriented. Its elemental affinities are fire, air, lightning, and sound, of which its mages may only be aligned with one.

Other abilities of Hand mages include:

Transmutation of objects

Enhancement of a single physical characteristic, such as speed, jumping, hearing, etc (but NOT durability)

Shapeshifting for limited amounts of time, with more complex forms being difficult to achieve and maintain. This ability excludes changing into another person, which can only be achieved by starbinders with Eye magic.

Hand mages also have a special animal form which they can change into at will and hold for long periods without breaking. This typically pertains to their personality and they won’t know what their specific form is until they achieve it for the first time.

The screbes of Hand mages are made of stone, which is a separate category from crystal. Examples: granite, sandstone, slate, calligraphy stone, etc.

★ The Ministry of Sidereal Witness A powerful magical society in the circle, who preserve divine history and language, protect the land, and have a great deal of influence when it comes to advising political bodies. Their ranks are composed entirely of starbinders and to enter this order is a high honor like no other. The Witnesses, as they call themselves, each have different roles within the society itself, dependent upon which type of magic they’re strongest with. The main headquarters for this organization are located in Edolan, but every nation in the Circle has their own outpost.

The highest members of the Ministry are called Skywatchers and their leader is called the Zenith.

★ The Endless Enclave A somewhat occultist group led by Aeon, who believe that Ombrath is real and that she’s the savior of the underdogs. This group is centered around waiting for the return of Ombrath’s demigod, whom they also are staunch believers in the existence and advent of. The Enclave are supposedly the keepers of the only godly runes of Ombrath known to man, but a lot of people think they’re crazy and don’t take them seriously. Their headquarters is a large compound with a minimalist design and an ancient, gnarled tree in a courtyard at its center. Many committed members live in and around this location, which also includes their largest place of worship. The runes are kept in a crypt below the ground.

The highest leader of the Enclave is called The Seer.

Technology

You may have heard of the term “solarpunk” in some science fiction settings. It describes a futuristic, sustainable world that’s based around going green and melding the environment with the man-made. “Lunarpunk” is its whimsical little cousin. Retro-futurism meets fantasy in a sleek, magic-powered society. Architecture with arches, ornate embellishments, and glowing plants climbing every facade. 50s-style vehicles that run on runes and stardust. Enchanted crystal tablets that look uncannily like iPads. This is the aesthetic of Palaamia’s civilizations.

Higher Beings

In this world, it is believed that a person’s soul becomes a star in the night sky when they pass away. Nulgol guides them through to the other side, where they shimmer and glow for all eternity, watching over their descendants below. 

☾ - Lunar Acolytes - ☽

These are the four Acolytes of Palaamia, represented by the four moons in the sky: the Hand, the Heart, the Mind, and the Eye. Each of them has a name, which is still TBA. They look a bit like seraphs and are the patrons of each type of magic, which is strongest for each of them when their individual moon is full.

One particular Acolyte, (the Heart), became close with Zoa and trained her in her demigod magic from a young age till her Spark was damaged. The Acolyte was attacked by a Fallen Star and became a rabid creature who fights mindlessly in support of Nulgol, having forgotten who they once were. This Acolyte has since spread its curse to the other 4 and their magic has gone from light to dark. 

Lunar Acolyte magic is normally based on light, water, prismatics, and sand. But now that they’ve been corrupted, it is based solely on dark matter.

☾ - Fallen Stars - ☽

Ordinarily, Fallen Stars are the souls of the damned who become dense, dark neutron stars in the night sky, or who burn up in the atmosphere of the planet in the form of meteor showers. They’re doomed to do so endlessly as a part of their punishment. However, since Nulgol has closed the gates to the afterlife, all souls that have been unable to move on and take their place in the night sky have transformed into Fallen Stars. They’re mindless demons without Sparks who are ravenous in their emptiness.

Fallen Stars are vaguely humanoid and have the ability to phase/jump through spacetime like quarks and bend gravity. They also have some fire abilities.

Types of Possible Magic

This is just a list of possible things that magic can do in Unremarkable’s world. It’s non-exhaustive and subject to change, if I so decide.

Open, shut, lock, unlock (doorway magic)

also: Teleport somewhere you’ve already been (or maybe just have seen)

Element + perpetual motion = engine

Bending an element, including for party tricks

Combining elements (fire + air = lightning, for example)

Connect, interlock (includes to summon sth or lock onto a target)

also: Magnet, anti-magnet

also: Tether, retain (physical or memory)

Heal wounds, but NOT cure a sickness

Protect, shield, hide (forcefield, invisibility, etc) 

Shapeshift, transmute (including size and durability)

also: Surface tension and matter state change

Illusion manipulation, sensory hallucination

Telepathy, walking in the waking mind

Dreamwalking is reserved for Nulgol and their descendants

Give sleep, hypnotize

CANNOT force truth. Truth is sometimes subjective, but can never be manipulated.

Telekinesis (can be used to disarm)

Various forms of superhuman augmentation (strength, speed, etc)

Bend sound (earth + air) - creates music, manipulates voices, etc

Fertility, probability, luck (entropy)

Scry

Heightened sense of detection (vibrations, internal bleeding, unseen presence)

Reveal (opposite of hide/protect)

Conjure something nearby or temporarily something that’s far away

Track, find (compass magic hehehe)

It’s bigger on the inside! (ex: Tohki’s hammerspace ability)

Camouflage, color change, or otherwise blend in

chameleon skin, chameleon arch, or just that feeling when you’re infatuated with someone else but they don’t know you exist

“blade” - Slice something without an actual blade

Create false memory, memory wipe, intensify old memory

Secret-keeping - only the keeper and one chosen other can ever know

Duplication, mirroring (gemini)

Willpower manipulation, intense power of suggestion (illegal, dark art)

Echo/imprint reading (ex: see the last thing done in X space or sense the last person to touch X object) - TIME RELATED

Body switch (tentative...maybe not)

Translation machine, omniglot (only among humans)

Assist non-aerodynamic creatures with flying; assist non-hydrodynamic creatures with swimming

Rhistel

★ Gender: Male (he/him) ★ Species: Peryton ★ Starbinder: Zoa ★ Alignment: Lawful good ★ Traits: Kingly, gentle, protective, proud ★ Appearance A graceful peryton with a ruff of feathers around his neck and a ridge of them that stick up a little on his spine. He has elegant antlers and a sort of faded palette that incorporates dusky reds, creams, silver-greens, and grey-blues. 

★ Magic Perytons are inherently magical beings, so Rhistel is able to heal plants with his breath (which saps some of his energy) and can also make them dream. When he became Zoa’s familiar, he also gained the ability to camouflage with the surrounding environment at will.

Zeles

★ Gender: Female (she/her) ★ Species: Celestial butterfly (not an actual species) ★ Starbinder: Atlas ★ Alignment: True Neutral ★ Traits: Cats staring off into space with big round eyes sums up her personality. ★ Appearance A tiny butterfly with a dark purple, gold, and green palette. The edges of her wings glow and she trails stardust when she flies. 

Zeles isn’t a member of an actual species or even a living creature, but rather a manifestation of the magical remnants that were clinging to Atlas when Pyxis created him. Because she’s not technically alive, Zeles doesn’t require any sustenance.

★ Magic When she spreads her wings over someone’s eyes, she can allow them to see through solid objects or into higher dimensions.

Zeles and Atlas have a slightly different relationship than most Lumes and their starbinders. She needs to be physically touching him in order to employ the full effects of their connection, such as communicating via telepathy. They also can’t stray too far from each other, which is a bit of a weakness.
