My grandmother told her children that free food is cursed.

For most people, bringing wine or desserts to a dinner party is just etiquette. But for her children, it’s so they never eat for free.

Her reasons are mostly moral. Every Catholic knows it’s better to give than to receive. And zodiacal. In traditional astrology, there are placements that invite bad luck when put on the receiving end of generosity.

But if we strip away the superstition, I can tell you that the way you receive free food dictates whether you will be rich or poor.

If a friend offers to pay for your meal, do you think, “Ooh, lovely, thanks!” or “Good. I paid last time.”

If the bakery is giving away free cheesecakes from 9-10 am, do you think, “How sweet of them!” or “I’ll be there by 5. Who needs sleep, right?”

If Nutella is Buy 1 Get 1 Free at your supermarket, do you think, “I hope there’s some left for me!” or do you fight other shoppers for the last two tubs?

People who think getting free food is a nice bonus in life are in a state of abundance. Receiving it does not damage their luck.

But people who think getting free good is a competition are in a state of lack. Receiving it is tantamount to being cursed indeed.

Food, like money, is energy. Trust it to flow your way. If you do, it will stay.

Obsessed with the idea of Bruce attending to the kids while holding a conversation with other adults. Like he's at the Watchtower talking to J'onn about something and Dickbin is holding his hands and walking up his body to springboard off his chest and flip backwards. Bruce nodding along to something at WE meeting while leaning to the side, to peek at what Jason is reading next to him. Tim fidgeting during a gala and Bruce, having a conversation with a donor to the charity, reaches into his pocket without looking to pass Tim his phone to play games. Steph tugging on the end of his cape to lean backwards until she tumbles back and Bruce just throwing back his cape so she can do it again like a lion cub pulling at their mom's tail, all the while giving a run down of the mission to Khoa. Duke starting to glow faintly because he's nervous and Bruce just gently reaching over to put a hand over his to settle him, while Bruce talks to the doctors looking after Duke's parents. Bruce listening to some reporter's questions while holding out Cass's coat for her at some charity dinner before they leave. Bruce catching a finger in the back of Damian's collar to stop him from wandering off during patrol while he talks to Commissioner Gordon. Just Bruce taking notice of what the kids are doing, always having an eye on them while still getting business sorted. He's mothering while still serving efficiency.

so far one theme of the 30s for me has been realizing that literally every human being on earth who appears completely cool and collected and together with it at first glance has some threshold past which enough known information about them will shatter that mystique completely. i don't even say this negatively or pessimistically it's just been helpful to keep in mind that we're all like that.
