i dunno i honestly think "being transgender" is at least half a dozen distinct phenomena that only happen to resemble eachother because of broader societal constructs about sex and gender.

I think this is why we shouldn't have ever given up the term "transsexual." I've always thought it describes me better anyway. Pur goal shouldn't ever have been homogenization, but an increase in terms for different people who are all allied under the trans umbrella. Julia Serano also called for this in "Whipping Girl" way back in 2007, where she said that instead of trying build a "trans community" where people get flattened out into one big term for everyone, we should be building a trans alliance. Where different people with overlapping goals and need work together for our common good, but no one's identity gets ignored or delegitimized.
