I really wanted to hold off on officially commenting on the finale until it officially released, as much as I think the leaks are not very good and I doubt it’s gonna change much before release, it does feel a bit unfair to tear into something posted in a language I don’t speak before it was even meant to be seen by the public. However, this one thing has been bothering me so much I really just had to bring it up because I feel like I’m going crazy having no one to talk this about

What was the point of Ribbit?

Seriously. We spend SO much time on this character. Immense amounts of foreshadowing since episode 5, plastered all over the trailer. But I have to ask.. why? When I first saw episode 5, I thought it was pretty clear that the show was setting up Ribbit’s abstraction as the catalyst for Jax’s emotionally unavailable behavior. Jax pushes people away because he suffered a great loss and can’t bear to go through that again. Even Ragatha’s line about having “failed Jax” painted, at least to me, a very clear picture that Jax used to be comparatively more stable and Ribbit’s abstraction is what caused him to become so disagreeable and distant. It makes sense!!! Not saying Jax had NO issues before Ribbit abstracted, but I am saying that this was implied to be an event that radically changed his behavior in some sort of way. Like I’m not crazy for thinking that right?

So… then we see what actually happened between Jax and Ribbit and Jax acts the exact same way then that he acts now!! He pushes her away the same way he treats Pomni, honestly even more egregiously so! Instead of Ribbit’s death being the traumatic event that caused Jax to start pushing people away… he’s just always been like that… cause he has mommy issues or something. Which is like.. fine I guess. It’s not a terrible explanation for his behavior but if this is the route the show chose to take then WHY did we spend SO much time on Ribbit!!! Think about it, if you removed her from the show literally nothing would change. They only serve as extra angst for Jax but don’t actually have any real bearing on why he acts the way he does or the greater plot as a whole. It’s just wild to me just much time this show chooses to focus on a character that adds nothing narratively especially when we had much more interesting abstracted characters like Queenie and Scratch that went completely unexplored. It just feels like we wasted so much time!!! Like we SO easily could’ve placed Jax’s backstory spiel about his parents in episode 6 when he was talking with Pomni and then had him freak out when he realized how vulnerable he was being with her (if the show is gonna go the mommy issues route). Like wouldn’t that be a lot more interesting to see that dynamic with a preestablished character instead of a dead one that we don’t get to see until the finale (doesn’t help that Ribbit has like no distinguishing personality). IDK man. The way this show chooses to spend its focus is really bizarre and I did really love it a previous point but wow it does not know how to deliver a satisfying execution to all the intriguing buildup it so carefully set up. A shame, really
