Hi everyone!
I know I said we'd be back more often soon, but the life happened. A lot. So form analyses are still closed, but if anyone has general questions (finding your own dæmon/dæmon 'verse mechanics/etc) feel free to send them in! I (Raylen) am also taking questions about my own dæmon if anyone's curious. — Raylen
So how exactly do you determine what your daemon is?
I would start with, get a general feel for it. The website animalinyou.com has a really simple quiz that I’d suggest you start with, and based upon those results you can try fleshing it out more. Some basic traits to consider — are you more aggressive or passive? Social or solitary?
A lot of it just has to do with what feels right. A lot of people focus on mammals and birds and reptiles, but maybe insects feel more like you? Fish? Instinct will help you get a vague sense of your dæmon, and you can narrow it down from there.
Discussing with friends can be a good idea, too. Other people will see you differently, so try to find overlap between your perception of you, and their perception of you.
My own dæmon took a while to figure out. That he would be a predator was unanimously agreed upon between myself and my friends, but it took a few steps to find his proper form. We went from housecat, to wildcat, to snow leopard, and finally to amur tiger, over the course of a couple of years. It’s no coincidence that this happened as my own confidence grew.
So, it can take a while, but once you’ve found your dæmon it’ll feel right. And don’t be alarmed if it changes a few times – that’s just a sign that you’re changing.

Dæmon Form Analysis: Labrador Retriever
Personality: kind, gentle, loyal. Labrador retrievers are very easygoing and friendly, sometimes to the point where they’re deemed hyperactive (though this is rarely true). They excel at taking care of children. While people with labrador dæmons may seem naïve at times, their habit of seeing the good in people can give them the motivation to enact much-needed changes in their environment.

Dæmon Form Analysis: Black-Backed Jackal
The historical figures/fictional characters for this one were a bit rough, feel free to reply if you have a suggestion
Personality: loyal, helpful, territorial. Black-backed jackals are a bit of a contradiction. They don’t like outsiders, but the relationships they have are very dear to them. A peculiar skill that people with black-backed jackals have is the ability to change how they speak and comport themselves in order to better fit in with and dominate their surroundings.

Fictional Character: Sophie Devereaux (Leverage)

Form Analysis: Magpie
Form analysis for magpies, as requested
Personality: covetous, intelligent, resourceful. Magpies are inevitably stereotyped as greedy, but what most people don’t realise is that they are remarkably clever. Their greed isn’t limited to material things, and that motivation can be a good thing. People with magpie dæmons can be very ambitious, and they’re adept at making the most of a bad situation.

Form analysis, as requested, for maned wolves
Personality: independent, resourceful, suspicious. Unlike other wolf dæmons, maned wolves are very independent, and don’t always work well in packs. They’re more like foxes in that regard. But some people with maned wolf dæmons can thrive in social situations, taking the lead easily.

Large Daemons (Golden Compass)
I wonder how people with larger Daemons get around in everyday life. Anyone want to consider the possibilities with me? I’m talking things horse sized and above. I imagine some aspects of life (walking through a university with many rooms, for example,) might be hard. What /is/ the distance limit a daemon can be from it’s owner? I imagine some people could become drivers for horse carts and such if their daemons were horses. Or could they? would a horse daemon pull a cart? would the crush of people make it too risky for an accidental brush against someone?
I tried answering this earlier, but I obviously failed due to my general inability to, well, anything more complicated than log into my tumblr. Hopefully this works! (And I hope you don’t mind my second attempt at jumping onto your post).
I always love considering these types of questions, because there isn’t any real answer, and I often times find myself liking several different headcanons. But! I digress.
I definitely think there would be some major issues with any type of urban area if we followed the exact same rules as Pullman’s universe. I mean, our world just isn’t built for it, so if we got dæmons overnight, we’d all be screwed. But if dæmons were something that evolved along with us, I feel like our societies would be based around accommodating them? My dæ isn’t particularly big, at least not compared to a moose, but even a mountain lion presents some problems when you’re faced with getting around in an everyday type of crowd. Like, he would need his own seat on a plane/metro/car/whatever moving mechanical thingie.
However, I think the distance a dæmon can be from its human has a lot to do with size. My personal headcanon is that distance of separation is proportional to the size of the dæmon. A couple weeks ago I was trying to see if I could figure out some equation that would work to include weight, body length, and wingspan (or arm span) but then I remembered that I utterly suck at math and my big dreams went down the drain. Anyway, I feel like the larger the dæmon, the further away from their human they can travel. I also think that flight capabilities would impact the distance, but idk how to factor that in, though I’m sure it would give them a bigger field to work with. Still, it would be hard to get an elephant through a city without at least one person getting stepped on, so I’m not sure how that would work. I personally don’t like the idea of dæmons only being able to reach a certain size; I feel like that takes away from part of forms’ purposes and meanings if they aren’t the size they’re supposed to be. Maybe buildings and roads would be legally required to fit a minimum of, say, a draft horse? It would certainly prove to be a problem architecturally. Still, though, you could claim discrimination otherwise, so I guess large dæmons would just be made room for.
I think I talked about the idea of working dæmons forever ago, but I dunno when/where. I do feel like the idea of dæmons performing labor-intensive tasks would be considered decidedly lower-class, especially in eras/generations before the current one.
Jeez, I talk a lot. I’ll try to wrap this up quick! As for your last question about the whole brushing against dæmons thing, I do think we would be much more lax about dæmon touching than the people in Pullman’s universe. Here, it would probably be more on par with accidentally touching a stranger’s butt. It happens, it’s inappropriate if done on purpose, but otherwise it’s something mildly embarrassing but not that big of a deal. I mean, we’ve all accidentally touched some stranger’s butt without meaning to. It just happens when you’re in a crowd, and most of the time you don’t even apologize for it, you just pretend you don’t know what happened. It can hold meaning, like if you asked a partner to touch your ass, since that would be based on attraction and would be more thorough, but it can also just be a random thing that happened and you don’t even bother to tell your friend about because it literally didn’t matter in your day. But yes. Dæmons would be equal to butt-touching.
Gahhhh when I get typing I find it hard to stop. Anyhoosies, I’m hoping this is actually coherant to somebody other than me. I’ll be curious to know what your thoughts are!
There’s a looooot of things that’d be different in a dæmon ‘verse. I agree with @dustyard that dæmons like mountain lions/wolves/tigers (the latter being my own dæmon) would need their own spaces in planes, cars, etc; whereas smaller dæmons could sit in their person’s laps, and even larger dæmons would have a hell of a time of it.
Because of that, I think there’d be a space-designation system. Like how certain airlines are designed to be low-cost, while others cater to upper-class persons; there could be some airlines that specialise in dæmons up to big cat size, while other, slightly less common airlines have planes that are designed for dæmons bigger than that. Taxi cabs, trains, etc, they might all work the same way. On the subway, there might be certain cars designated for different-sized dæmons. Similarly, architecture might be structured that way – maybe some universities are more large-dæmon-friendly than others.
I also agree with dustyard’s headcanon that the distance dæmons can travel from their people could be related to how big they are. It’d certainly be an evolutionary advantage. And as for people brushing up against dæmons, I’m recalling an analysis I read a while ago – I can’t remember where – that pointed out that dæmon-touching would be wayyyyy more normalised in an urban setting, and I totally agree. Where I’m from, Boston, sometimes we get packed so tightly into the T that you can’t move. More crowds, more contact; so in rural places, it’d be a lot less acceptable.

They are capable of working well with others, but their assertive streak can lead to tense situations, and they will always insist upon taking the lead. People with spotted hyena dæmons are clever and loyal, and excel at manipulating circumstances in their favour.

Personality: Adaptable, unassuming, sly. Arctic foxes have learned how to adapt and blend in with their surroundings, and it's easy for them to avoid attracting attention when they want to. Really, though, they're always doing something worthy of centre stage, even if they do it on the down-low. People with arctic fox dæmons are playful and mischievous as much as they are sly and cunning, and as company they always make for a good time.

Personality: hardworking, loyal, energetic. Huskies are similar in some ways to their wolf ancestors, working excellently in groups. They’re often more lively and expressive than other dog breeds, and love the company of their friends. People with husky dæmons are determined workers, and once they have a goal in mind they’re not likely to let go of it. They can get a bit down-hearted if they’re alone too much.

Personality: intuitive, distractible, gentle. Despite their apparently flighty nature, awlets are observant and understanding. They excel at reading people, but are too caring to take advantage of that skill for their own benefit. People with butterfly dæmons may seem a bit sporadic, but they’re excellent friends to have around.

Personality: opportunistic, resilient, mischievous. House martins are innovative and adaptable, working hard to build a home for themselves. Once they find a group of friends, they stick with them, regardless of the circumstances — they have plenty of love to share. People with house martin dæmons can be a bit mischievous, and they don't mind pissing off people outside of their circle of friends.
