ok I already ranted about this in the tags but I'm still on it so I apologize in advance for the inevitable length of this:
"Basic science" is, for the most part, a stupid argument. For anything. I'm a physicist and whenever I hear it outside of a discussion between scientists about a specific topic they both understand, it makes me want to throw something.
"Basic science" generally refers to science taught at a secondary school or high school level, sometimes at 6th form/college too if you're in the UK. That science is bullshit. It exists to give you a rudimentary, oversimplified understanding of vastly complex topics
"Basic science" teaches that light travels in straight lines, something we've known to not be true for literal centuries.
"Basic science" says there's no gravity in space, something easily disproven by THE EXISTENCE OF ORBITS. Is the force as strong as it is here on Earth? No. Is it still there? Yes, if it weren't the Earth wouldn't exist.
"Basic science" teaches that the universe is made out of atoms. Over 90% of the universe is not atoms.
Oh you wanna talk biology specifically? "Basic biology"?
Alright fine, because "Basic biology" tells you that you have 5 senses. You actually have over 20, including temperature sensing and proprioception (this is what gives you ability to tell where your limbs are without using your eyes). You may have over 30, stuff is still being discovered and researched on this topic. But you definitely have far more than just 5. We've known this for decades.
And different people still experience these differently! People with synesthesia, a totally harmless and benign condition, will see colours, or hear smells! Does this mean they're faking it or disordered because it's rare? No, it's just an example of how it's impossible to pin down everyone's experience of something.
"Basic biology" taught me that deoxygenated blood is bluer, and that different parts of your tongue are used to taste different things. Neither of these are true!
"Basic biology" teaches that humans evolved from apes, when in reality both humans and apes evolved from a different species, a common ancestor between us.
Instead of going off "basic science" alone, good scientists defer to more experienced experts in subjects they don't specialize in. Hell, even when a scientist is talking about or looking into something they ARE an expert in, it's still vitally important that they find and talk to other experts and specialists.
Listen to the scientists. WHO, the people behind the DSM, every other major international healthcare or mental health organisation, the APA and a TON of other experts in medicine, biology, and psychology/psychiatry say that being trans is real and that trans people aren't mentally disordered or making it up. These aren't "basic biologists" because the rudimentary understanding you were given at the age of 16 isn't enough to understand an entire field of study.
Okay rant over. Tldr I'm an actual irl scientist and please for the love of all things sacred stop saying "basic biology" or "basic science" as a defense for something even the biologists disagree with.
