Shonibare uses the same distinctive fabric in his sculptures and installations to make copies of European costumes and furnishings. In The Swing (after Fragonard), Shonibare creates a sculpture of the central figure in Jean-Honore Fragonard’s 1776 painting. To many, the original painting represents the frivolous spirit and loose morality of French aristocracy shortly before the revolution. However, Shonibare’s work is not just a parody of the original: “I made a piece of work about this painting because I actually admire the work very much,” he says. “And I like the contradiction of taking something that’s supposedly ‘ethnic’ and putting that onto classical European painting.”

Karl-Marx-Hof in Vienna.

Karl Marx-Hof was built between 1927 and 1930 by city planner Karl Ehn, a follower of Otto Wagner. It held 1,382 apartments (with a size of 30–60 m² each). Designed for a population of about 5,000, the premises include many amenities, including laundromats, baths, kindergartens, a library, doctor offices, and business offices.

Karl-Marx-Allee

Old names die hard, and that is certainly the case in the eastern areas of Berlin where many streets, parks and squares have retained their communist inspired names. Karl-Marx-Allee is a sprawling four lane boulevard that has been called East Germany’s answer to des Champs Elysées in Paris.

  KMA stretches from Alexanderplatz in the Mitte district, to Frankfurter Tor in the Friedrichshain district. The boulevard was born from post-war reconstruction of the Soviet occupied zones of Berlin. Called Stalinallee from the end of the war until 1962, it was built to represent the socialist ideals of the New Germany.

Just about all the buildings were designed in the “wedding cake” style of “Socialist-Realist” architecture. In fact, some of the buildings are said to have been copied from structures in Moscow.

Today, KMA is full of stores, cafés and apartments. Many of the buildings are now under protection order as landmarks. Along some areas of the street there are historical markers that describe the buildings and their significance.

Work meeting at the Morgan Library today. An incredible place! Private tour of the vaults. Got to see Dickens’s original manuscript of ‘A Christmas Carol’ and a bunch of Jane Austen letters. Medieval manuscripts, Shakespeare portraits…heaven.
