week 4

                             Week 4 Drawing

The earliest drawing was found on the walls, caves in France and Spain. Other examples that were scratched carved, or painted on the surfaces of primitive tools.  The purpose of drawing for the artist is to clear minds and organizes their ideas to create art. My reflections on the reading of drawing has too many techniques the artist used for example used the two-dimensional, pastel or oil pastel, the charcoal the artist used prevent further accident smudging for example in a self. -profit on (p. 203). The most common in fifty century and sixteen centuries were silverpoint which consist of paper coated with some medium such as white color or rabbit skin glue and mixt with bone dust.

William Kentridge is a man who know for his animation drawings and used camera motion to his work. Williams Kenbridge is a man who knows how to do art and how to works with art he gets involved with a creation from puppets, sculpture, live performances, sculptures, works with opera, recording music to be able to make his works of art. William kentridge is a contemporary artist today Also, what like is the he has the talent to help others to become more people involve in art.

What surprised you in this week's content? The artist in how he uses his techniques the graphite. Also, how the artists use reality put on piece of paper. In additional the artists used objects like nature, dead animals, plants, rocks, shell, persons, drinking glass, books, vases, jewelry, coins, etc. however there too many techniques of drawing I just mention some of them because I don’t have the knowledge to describe each of methods because read some methods but I don’t have experience of the artist used of drawing.

What artworks did you strongly like or dislike and why? I like the graphite, I like the pastel work art the Cityscapes by Tom Matt he uses different techniques. Also, he uses the nature to create art. In additional he also is related with other artist by his oil board “Morgan and Edgar Degas After the Bath there both are using women to create art Edgar Degas in pastel on paper and Tom Matt in oil on board.

How does this relate to your life and interests? I like the graphite because like to enjoy see what means to the person what is project to the people.

Has your opinion or understanding of art changed at all? How? Well on point of view art is an expression of feelings. Also changed myself how see art is sharing the way knowledge to the world how to draw, the forms the gestural, the graphic what they use on draw in some is draws is personal. Additionally, the art expresses the feeling of draw of the person who draw the picture.

How does this relate to your life and interests? Well I don’t draw but like observe the art I like what the art project the people do. Its interested how people create a beautiful drawing with different techniques. One is simple   technique with paper and pencil and imagination.

week 1

What interests you about visual art/this class? I am interested how the artists use their imagination and skills and express in pieces of paper or wood  and paintings. It can be how artist expresses their feeling emotionally. For example, I want to know how they express beautiful art, lonely art,  real art from the artist’s own life. In addition, art can express     political, cultural views, world people and environment. Also, I am     interested in the time period that the art was painted or created.

Is there anything specific you hope we cover in this course? Yes, I would like to recognize better art, describe what is the meaning or art in the specific art works.

week 10 Craft

My reflections on     the reading? What     I have in the reading about this chapter craft Media that  I like the craft how time of period was established     in England and spread and also, was international movement. I learned     about Williams Morris a social performer poet, and master designer in many     fields including the Craft Movement which was aesthetic inspiration .     Williams Morris and his followers brought great appreciation for fine     craftmanship in ceramic, fiber, metalwork, wood, and glass. At this time     period the price was to high the only person that can afford to get craft     was the rich people (P.351). Also, Gustav Stickley, editor of the     Craftsman, used machines to make wood furniture. He was interested in the     traditional, he works on Native American Culture mainly in the Southwest.     In addition, in Mexico there are some people that still using their native     ceramics that are beautiful colors and handmade ceramics. The finished clay     as we know is called ceramics.

   Your reflections on the videos/media? My reflections on     the media about Brian Jungen: well, he works with plastic lawn chairs to     create works of art. In this case he makes a whale skeleton. In my opinion     he wants to transmit to the public that we are destroying our Environment     by industrial whaling.  we  humans are using in cosmetics, oil to     cook, perfumes and some people consume the whale meat. Jungen also, works     with Nike tennis shoes. He finds inspiration in the colors that have     patterns and makes art of the shoes. Brian Jungen besides do art furniture.     He makes drums out of furniture table. He makes art out of a freezer and     place a flag on top of freezer. he is native Canadian and he loves nature,     goes to the coast, river to explore and remember his childhood. Jungen had     hard time losing his parents at the early age of seven years old. Brian Jungen     have a experience hunting and also Dane Zaa heritage. The most time he     enjoys is when he is outdoors and be withing his dogs.

        Connections/comparisons you find between     the two? Paula     Winokur on working in Clay I compare they similar on White Butte,2005.     Unglazed porcelain fired to cone 10(1300c) in a reduction gas kiln, some     stain and ceramic pencil,26( height at highest point)x90x126 ins (66x     229x320 cm)  Paula Winokur been     working in porcelain since  1970     desribe the porcelain is delicate and transparent (p.357).

Connections to     another artist's work from the "Relevant Artists" section of the     course content. I found connection with Szabo’, clock c. 1924 wrought iron     ( p.358). symmetrical form like the video with the drums.

      How does this relate to your life and interests? The ceramic is what interested me the most. I have my first memories of childhood I love how often people make art with ceramics. Sometimes if you don’t have the tools to make ceramics but the individual used their imagination to be creative and make ceramic if individuals have inspiration to make art. I personally I collect ceramics I love have it in my house specially I love the ceramics from different countries. At Christmas I use ceramic from my own country that is Mexico. I display  the nativity set and some figures like animals, little person etc.

week 3

In the reading this week, that time periods were the most interesting to me were the Gothic and Into the Twenty-First Century art. I liked the Gothic because it dealt with architecture. I also liked it because of the stained-glass windows. They are very cool to look at because they are from broken glass pieces, that are then transformed into a big glass piece. I also liked it because each window has a story or a meaning behind it. I really liked how big the Cathedrals were and how well they are structured. It was interesting to read that some of the people would not approve any kind of art or art out of the ordinary. They would only approve the art that they have seen before.

The video of Trevor Paglen,  an American, artist was very interesting to me. It was interesting to me because he used his Military knowledge in his works about this time period and he used technology to create art. It was also interesting to know that Nevada sent drones to different places and that Trevor caught them on photograph. I enjoy the art of photography more than abstract paintings. The collection of badges and patches he had were cool to hear the story behind them. What really grabs my attention is that photography captures the attention of people in Trevor’s photos.  You can hardly even tell that there is a drone in the picture. Like he says in the video, it just looks like a tiny bug flying in the air. I wonder how many drones individuals see.

In my opinion, there is connection between this week’s reading and the Trevor Paglen video. The connection I found is that reading talked about the history of art and Trevor just talked about how photography and art history connects. I think that there could have been more of a connection if Trevor talked  a little bit more of some photography history, but what he does is capture the attention through art

For my related artist I chose Faith Ringgold. Ringgold born in October 1930 and is currently 87 years old. She is most famous for her narrative quilts which display colorful images of urban life and African American culture beautifully knitted onto hand made quilts. Ringgold has raised a lot of money for many charitable organizations with her quilts and inspired many with her peaceful loving message. Below is an image by Ringgold I enjoyed. She also went to college in New York City and got her master’s degree in fine art.

Week 16

John Cage gives ten rules for student and teachers. These rules are important but everyone has their own strategies to learn. For example, I go to the learning center to study, I trust my home as a safe place to study. Also, I think you can’t pull everything out, because a teacher has the wisdom, but you can only learn the wisdom, you can’t take it. The third rule do apply either because teachers cannot have control of student life; because teachers make their own rules but it gets to unexpected situations at times. As humans, we are not in control of those situations that are unexpected. The fourth rule personally I don’t follow it because I don’t consider everything an experiment. First comes real life. I can’t be experimenting with my grades. The fifth rule that John Cage gives is that this means finding someone wise or smart and choosing to follow in a good way. I don’t agree because as a person we make our own choices to be self-disciplined, such us to continue doing our post in our class of art appreciation until the final day. The sixth rule I don’t agree with because there are always consequences of actions that you make. The eighth rule applies to art only because it may criticize the work of art,  not other subjects like math or writing. The ninth rule I agree if you can manage your time, homework and life, why not enjoy every moment of your life as if it was the last. The tenth rule I agree with to a certain point but I don’t have the time for whatever comes. I believe at this moment to a certain point the time is limited for unexpected subjects.

The Time Traveller episodes are about a young, angry man that experiences what it is like living in a time period through digital technology. He called himself a Mohawk and he narrates the history of the Native American peoples. The time he shows first in the episode is the Indian massacre in Ford Calgary, Canada. The second video episode grabbed my attention because the man dressed in black as a Mohawk hunter to teach us to about the Native American Massacre. The second video talks about Action Township, Minnesota 08-17-1862 hunting for food. This video was sad because Americans don’t pay native Americans and they didn’t have food to survive. The third video was about lady who talks about Native American Act 11-07-1990 there were helicopters, arrested people. What I see about art is that time period reflected in art. Nowadays in the twenty first century, the art is changing with technology that is teaching us art by seeing the past and present and what should be coming in the future.In this last chapter we learned about an Artists Manifesto: is the art that symbolized how you want to interpret it as movement or an artist like Mariana Abramovich. It can be written piece of art or art that symbolizes and summarizes what that movement propose. The Manifesto is divided into three parts old fashioned list of rules of personal behavior, Miss Manners from the nineteenth century. The Manifesto of the Futurism painters started in February 20, 1909.

Sound Art and Exploration

Before I begin my essay proper, I must preface it with a refutation of the final point in Robert Worby’s article An Introduction to Sound Art wherein he asserts that Sound Art “develops what it is to be human.” This is false. Hearing is one of many senses humans commonly use to navigate the world, but it is not a defining feature of humanity. Impairment or lack of it does not alter one’s species. Presumably Worby was being poetic here, but the slight to humanity was too great to go uncorrected.

Sound, as sight or touch, has a profound impact on those who experience it. There are limits to what the human ear can perceive, but there are enough sounds within range to occupy thought indefinitely as it is. Most sounds are considered ambient and not given names, except, as Worby noted in his aforementioned article, those related back to the object which produced them. With such a wealth of options, and an inadequate system in place for recognizing and categorizing them, it is no wonder that people have begun to experiment and create new fields of sound. For example, ASMR is currently rising in popular awareness as a new category of sound performance, one which takes advantage of the power of sound to induce relaxation. Looked at in its societal context and the insufficient categories of sound, there is nothing surprising about the emergence of Sound Art.

Just as different colors elicit different reactions from an audience, so it is with sound. When visual and auditory elements are combined, they can become even more effective. Ryoji Ikeda’s piece The Planck Universe [Micro] is a good example; the piece is composed of video projectors, computers, and speakers. The images appear on a large rectangular surface on the ground, which can be walked on. While watching a video of it, without knowing the title, I began to call it “Patterns of the Universe.” It is reminiscent of the sea, of microorganisms, of the universe, of speed and change and human understanding. It is dizzying at times; there are enough bright, flashing lights that I was annoyed that there wasn’t a warning for epilepsy. Certainly it was a worthy experience. I don’t know of a word that encompasses the feelings I had; it was like dreaming or thinking without words. Much of my understanding was subconscious, but I felt fulfilled by it. It may be relevant to note that these feelings were not distinct from those I get upon viewing other artistic installations without sound. The medium may be slightly different, but the power of the art is the same.

Susan Philipsz is an artist with a keen awareness of places of meaning. Working in Germany and seeing the Holocaust memorials there only deepens this natural understanding. She is also interested in the psychological effects of sound. Through these two things, her Sound Art develops. In 2012, Philipsz revisited Pavel Haas’ Study for Strings. Study for Strings was written in the Theresienstadt concentration camp in 1943 and performed by prisoners for Nazi propaganda purposes. Shortly thereafter, the musicians were sent to Auschwitz, where Haas and most of the other performers were killed. Philipsz isolates two parts of the composition - the viola and the cello - and combines them with silence. The silence is, of course, referring to the missing players; victims of the Holocaust.

One Square Inch of Silence is a piece meant to raise awareness of the dangers to the environment and the importance of protecting it. However, the name is incorrect. The recording is not of silence, it is the sounds of nature. In the description, it is referred as “true quiet.” It most certainly is not. If I am meant to believe that ambient sounds in nature affect the human psyche differently than man made ambiance, I shall require evidence. But despite the clumsy delivery, the message of preservation is important and necessary for the continuation of human life on this planet.

The Planck Universe [Micro], Study for Strings, and One Square Inch of Silence are all examples of the many and varied ways that Sound Art can be effective. Artists can and do use it in much the same way traditional artists do to bring attention to something, or to invoke a feeling, or to think abstractly in a way that can be experienced by multiple people. I do not see a strong distinction between this and previous types of art studied in this class.

Artists can and do use it in much the same way traditional artists do to bring attention to something, or to invoke a feeling, or to think abstractly in a way that can be experienced by multiple people. I do not see a strong distinction between this and previous types of art studied in this class.

Week 15

Your reflections on the reading ? In my opinion, in the “One square inch of silence” I can hear the birds and frogs like it was in a natural environment place and even the feeling that makes the sound. Also I learned that it helps the memory to recognize which sounds the guitar, telephone and car have names of a sound. If you hear them, you convert it to art. It’s just not objects, but a different perspective. Also I learned that to balance the sounds  by making different  points of sounds, it makes the sound different. Also, I  don’t like the sounds too loud but I do like those sound that are low and sweet. In addition, hearing is different from listening which I didn’t know. Listening is paying attention and interacting with it. Listening happens when we convert sensible sound and connect with it. 

Your     reflections on the videos/media? My reflections on the video are that     Susan Philipsz was born in Glasgow, Scotland. She works in psychological     and sculptural sizes of sound. She records her voice and makes music. She collects     old historical instruments and makes music sound with them. She puts her     work of art in the environment in the water, street and traffic passing. The     train station that Suzan spends most of her time at is one that was used     most often to take the Jews to a concentration camp. Susan and the Jewish     man work together, and composed music which they made sound like if it was     World War II. Susan wants to make on her 18th anniversary the     sound of the annexation of Austria by Germany.She lives and works in Berlin.

Has your opinion or understanding of art changed at all? How? In my opinion this class changed my point of view to see life differently, especially art, because before I didn’t think sound was art.

What artworks did you strongly like or dislike and why? I like “One Square Inch of Silence”  because it is natural, it feels calmed down, and it’s a place to relax.  

How does this relate to your life and interests? Well I like sound, but not too loud. I am more like a calm person and like the sound low.

Minerva Cuevas

While watching the video about Minerva I noticed she had a strong sense of community and bringing people together. I really enjoyed learning a little more about her community and what influences her art work. I never really knew a lot about Mexico but when Minerva said she is inspired but the amount of improvisation in the town and how there are so many people from all over and from different backgrounds come together to create music, dance, and art. No matter where you came from or who you were it was a safe place for everyone to be and take part in the activities.

The first project Minerva talked about it thought was pretty cool. I did not catch the name of the project but the concept caught my attention. She started with giving away phone calls which then turned into subway tickets, food barcodes, and even student ID’s. I think when you come from somewhere where the whole community struggles getting these things for free could mean the world to you. A simple phone call could be the biggest difference in someone’s day or week.

I was also a big fan of how she used the history of cacao to create a sculpture. Her main focus was on the problems of starvation and this reminded me of last week’s discussion post of the child and the vulture. The chocolate drip was my favorite part of this video because the chocolate drips every time a person dies from starvation and the drips created a small yet large sculpture.

Reading the articles about relational aesthetics I was really confused. Reading the beginnings of the articles just seemed all over the place. I did however, appreciate how Jeriah asked friends to put it into terms it would be easy for someone who knows nothing about art to understand. This somewhat helped but I needed to dumb it down a little more.

I researched into it further and realized the name makes It sound much more complicated then it actually is. I understood it as people taking everyday objects to create art by changing or adding onto the object itself but not enough to take away from the original subject. Or an object that has a set purpose and creating another purpose for it.

I looked up an artist one of the pages suggested to see if a visual aid would be more help into understanding this subject. I recognized the name Maya Lin from when we learned about her a couple weeks ago. It helped to understand more but I am still not sure I get it quite yet.

While reading the introduction article the writer summarized the topic to be about social interaction or places we come together to interact and this made way more sense to me than much of the article did. This type of art can not be limited to anything. It can be anything, include anyone, and be made of whatever helps the artist create their project.

How did she come up with that idea of using chocolate? It is amazing to think that she got that machine to drip every three seconds and that is the number of people that die due to starvation.  In my opinion she puts this work of art , because she wants the people don’t be blind. Also, Minerva’s  is  very interesting in social problems that we have in our society.

Week 13

Your reflections on the reading? What surprised me in this week is the art, especially the sculptures,  that are very interesting because of what they art made for.

Your reflections on the videos/media? What it surprised me is that Minerva Cuevas is a sculptor that is not only making art is also influencing the society she lives in. Minerva Cuevas is known because of her project Better Life Corporation, Mejor Vida Corporation founded in 1998. The company offers a variety of public services including the facility of special barcodes to cut the cost of food items at supermarkets, as well as personalized fake student ID cards. Also, she showed to society the corruption of the company a Del Monte which linked to politics in Guatemala. Since 1521, the chocolate called Soconusco cacao has been a part of Mexico. Cuevas used soconusco cacao to create art. It gives other point of view to society about what is happening in real life, and don’t be blind because you can make difference. Also, I like the sculpture idea about the chocolate dropping to the floor, making a sculpture out of a pile of chocolate. The artist said it is example for startation for every minute in the world. She creates social, economic, and political artwork.

Connections/comparisons you find between the two?.The connection that between about the artist is that each of them has their ingredients. The comparison  that I found between Minerva Cuevas and Feliz Gonzales-Torrez are that both artists like to used sweet food items. Both artists are created art with every product that we have handy.  The comparison with Gonzalez-Torrez and Minerva Cuevas is that both artists have used emotion to show to the public what really is happening with corrupt corporations and react to the situation that we are living in.

Connections to another artist's work from the "Relevant Artists" section of the course content? Pedro Reyes, an artist from Mexico City has connections with Minerva Cuevas. His art deals with social problems that we have in our society.

What surprised you in this week's content? What surprised me is that Minera Cuevas, is a protestor but also, she shows to people how art can demonstrate what is behind society.

Has your opinion or understanding of art changed at all? How? My opinion on this art. Is that I didn’t know the artist can use simple life products to make art.

What artworks did you strongly like or dislike and why? I like Minerva Cuevas chocolate sculpture when drops of chocolate fall and she explained it is when a person is starving.

How does this relate to your life and interests? It’s related to my life because I am also, from Mexico, so I know what it is like living in the country. Also, I have tasted the kind of chocolate she uses.

week 11

Your reflections on     the reading

My reflections in the architecture are how it is been constructed for decades. Also, the architecture has a lot of detail, the primary elements used are stones. An Edifice like Machu Piccu I know is Indian and the archaeologist said that was made by an Inca emperor and is located in south Peru. The architecture take time to create, design, and build. The project contains a lot of detail. Also, architects design the public buildings with brick and stone.

Your     reflections on the videos/media? My     reflections with Maya Lin is the she is an American artist who created the     Vietnam Veterans Memorial. She also called herself a designer instead of an     architect. Maya Lin created the Grand Rapids Ice Rink and Park Project in     Michigan. She used circle to be the theme. She used water, steam and ice     to skate and created the work of art. She also, geography.

Connections/comparisons     you find between the two? The connections the I     found on the artist Frank Lloyd Wright(jr), Wayfarers Chapel, Palos Verdes,     California (p.393). The connections are that both artists used circles, the     geography of the landscape, and glass.

Connections to     another artist's work from the "Relevant Artists" section of the     course content?  I found a connection in the Round Stone     Dairy Barn, Hancock Shaker Village, Pittsfield, Massachusetts, 1826 (p.387).     I found the artist used three dimensions and the geography of the region to     build a piece of art. Also, like Maya Lin’s Ice rink, the work of art is outside.

What surprised you in this week's     content?     What surprised me is the architecture is all over the world. Also, every     artist has his or her own techniques to create art. Some artist used     circle, stones, texture, line, space and colors. Also, the artist who made     architecture need more people who help them with the painting and architectural     projects to put detail in the work of art. In addition, architecture is     now in the city where there are those big buildings. Also, what surprised     me is the artist used math to measure the structures, windows, and circles.

  Has your opinion or understanding     of art changed at all? How? Yes, now I can see the colors, texture of art in     details in what material the artist used if is visible. Machu Piccu, for     example, shows that is almost seven hundred years old. The Incas must have     mathematical knowledge to create each monument of stones, big structures     that have been standing for a long time.

  What artworks     did you strongly like or dislike and why? I like the The Pont du Gard, Nimes,Nimes, France.     Mid-first century c.e (p.397). Its three dimensional arches extend     widely, in a gothic design. Also made of stone, it uses pillars to support     the arches and creates a beautiful path to cross the bridge.

  How does this relate to your life     and interests?     When I lived in Mexico, my uncle made my grandmother bedroom windows in     arches and painted them in the scolors white and red. I love her bedroom     because it gives you a view to the street.     The arched windows have an old style but look beautiful from my     point of view.

Week 8

The reading, like always explains different ways to do the certain type of art style we’re learning for the week. This week is focused on sculpting. Something that I love about sculptures is the real feel of being next to one and even the sizing of them. For example, the Cloud Gate located in Millennium Park, Chicago is so big that dozens of people can go underneath it. A sculpting technique that I am most familiar with would be modeling. I love modeling because it deals with clay makings. While I took 3-D art, we made a lot of projects with clay and wire. Assembling would be related to the wire projects I did. 

Kara Walker was the relevant artist that I researched last week, and it was really awesome getting to learn more things about her style of work since it was hard for me to find. She typically paints instead of making sculptures. In Sugar Baby, it blew my mind when she was able to assemble and create a sculpture that big and put that much sugar on it. I liked seeing her work have a greater meaning to it, like relating it to slavery. I like how, even though it may be seen as “porn” rather than art, she still sticks to what she wants to make. I think my favorite part of her piece would be the babies that were made out of sugar. I felt like I was there while watching the video. Seeing the sugar melting from the children made me think of a child that was actually sweating from working in the fields.

Kara’s work would be like modeling. She was able to carve out the styrofoam and form the children from sugar. In some ways, I think Kara applied the concept of casting as well because she applied a layer of sugar instead of bronze or plastic.

In her interview that we had to read, I found it interesting that she had to create a piece based on a book she hated and never wanted to read. Halfway through the project, she realized she had to give in and read, “Gone With the Wind.” In the end, she created a painting that has a lot of meaning to it and is something she enjoys. “The silhouette lends itself to avoidance of the subject—of not being able to look at it directly—yet there it is, all the time, staring you in the face.” This is something that I have never thought of about silhouette’s and really like how this quote is worded. I think this painting sums up how slavery was back then. In the left part of the painting, you can see the man and woman there, but the rest of the painting shows what an African American had to deal with.

For my relevant artist, I chose Tara Donovan. Her work is very realistic and blew me away at how detailed everything is created. Tara was born in New York in 1969 and still works in New York today. She is a contemporary artist and is known for her site-specific installations. She uses ordinary things you find around the house like toothpicks, Scotch tape, straws, and other objects. In the biography I read of Tara, she mentioned that she wasn’t trying to simulate nature, but more of mimicking nature and the way things grow. Her work has been displayed all over the country.

I think it’s really cool that you got another week to learn more about the relevant artist you chose and to really dig deep to understand her ways of experiencing her beliefs through her artwork. I also thought it was kind of weird and somewhat funny that Kara had created a piece she got so widely attached too over a book she despised because of the racial history. The relevant artist I choose this week was used everyday things you could find around the house. The relevant artist I choose was Rachel Whiteread.

yes I  love the art work, that Kara Walker made. The sculpture with sugar is not  just a piece of  artwork but  it is about history.  The artist researched to be more creative in a piece of art. The History that  impacted Kara Walker was African American History. The talent is not just from Kara Walker but with the help of other people with the piece of art, who seemed to have fun with the sugar. In this chapter I learned that with only simple ingredients you can create.

Week 2

Reading

  The reading discusses the main principles of art starting with lines, shapes, and forms. Being new to art I am not very familiar with how in-depth it goes. While I was reading I was very surprised at how much I didn’t know about lines, and how many different ways a line could be used and described. Looking at the pictures of the different pieces and their descriptions I learned so much about the little things that make a piece complete. Shape and form are also key components of a piece of art and there are two different types of form, two-dimensional and three-dimensional. The different shapes and form can help make a piece complete.

Having seen the Parthenon in Nashville, Tennessee I am very familiar with different scales of art. The statue of Athena inside the Parthenon is larger than life and puts the art around the rest of the building into perspective. The lighting of the building helped to highlight certain parts of the statue and after reading the section about lighting I began to realize why.

Texture and color are two aspects of art that most recognizable in a piece of art. Color is usually the first thing I notice and the texture is not too far behind it. Seeing something with texture reminds the brain of what it would feel like even without touching it.

Katharina is a very good artist that has a true passion for taking blank spaces and making them into something beautiful. Katharina goes through her thinking and designing process in great detail and uses her art to bring joy to others. Katharina likes using a parallel skill set to design her works and acrylic spray paints the give the pieces more color. Katharina is good at problem-solving, and when something in her process goes wrong she is always ready with something to fix it.

Connections/comparisons you find between the two

The video put all of the things talked about in the reading into a real-life example. Katharina puts a lot of thought into making a blank space into something beautiful. She talked about her thinking and designing process that gives the viewer insight into the life of an artist. The content in the video was a little over my head at first but Katharina explained everything in a very good way.

Relevant Artists

Claire Morgan is a world-renowned artist who currently lives in Gateshead, England. Claire was born on May 18, 1980, and she studied at Northumbria University and Ulster University. Most of Claire’s work is fragile hanging installations that show her interest in natural process and organic material. Claire uses her pieces to express how hard it is for humans to understand life and death. She uses her pieces to help her make sense of life and death for herself.

This relates to my life because I also struggle with the boundaries of life and death and find it difficult to understand the after death part of life. The way Claire shrouds the animals in her work is almost like protecting them from the unknown, or death.

week 7

Your reflections on the reading? My reflections on this chapter is that I learned how the artist used photography to capture the attention for example  Dorothea Lange, Migrant Mother (Nipomo,California 1936. p. 285). It  capture the time of history and the children. It  is a  realistic picture of a poor family. It was nationally distributed and helped more families to get better life and the women in the picture was memorable.

Your reflections on the videos/media? My reflection on the video is that Natalia Almada  takes the film very personally what is going in her life in the past and the present, that is not only in Mexico City, it  is all over the country of Mexico, the cartels  and the danger to be in Mexico right now with the crime. Natalia has her roots as a Mexican women as she lived in Mexico and she made artwork by taking pictures, and film and listen to family histories about her grandfather Plutarco Elias Calles.

Connections/comparisons you find between the two? They both have personal histories of memories to remember Natalia’s  sister who drowned have little memories because she was too little to remember about her. Jim Cummings have his moms funeral and expressed himself.

What surprised you in this week's content? It surprised me how in the twentieth century used cameras and  been change to cell phones,tablets, and computers. Everything is transformed by technology and used not only by common people but the artist use digital technology to create a piece of artwork.

Has your opinion or understanding of art changed at all? How? In my point of view, how I see art has changed. Sometimes I just didn't pay attention to the piece of art: how the artist  used color, the quality of photography and technology. The artist may transform a photograph into a piece of artwork.  The artist uses a photograph and places it on top of a different photograph to add different meaning.

What artworks did you strongly like or dislike and why? I like the Walt  Disney Studios, Aldar bonds with the lemurs (frame from Dinosaur 2000. p. 320). Because is film not real but it attract the attention by looking at the photography or film. In this case this time period was prehistorical.

How does this relate to your life and interests? I like to enjoy art and see what the twenty first century brings us. The technology is bringing a lot of  helpful tools. I am interested  in  looking at how the artist used the photography and uses it  as a piece of art.
