We NEED to talk about this scene because it shape-shifts when you watch the movie a second time???

On your first viewing, when Grace leaves the party to join Stratt on the deck, you’ve been following Grace's POV for the whole movie. You can feel how he's trying to break the ice and connect with Stratt via humor: "Permission to come aboard, captain?🫡"

And Stratt being Stratt kills the joke immediately: "You’re already aboard." And by killing that joke she also kills his attempt at connecting with her. That's her thing. You feel it in the knock-knock scene and you feel it here because Grace is feeling it. He stammers and he's nervous ("Talk too much, that's my problem, like right now"). His attempt at human connection is painfully unrequited (again).

When you finish the movie, you learn, however, that that is not true at all. You hear Stratt's voice crack when she has to do what she has to do, and you realize how her carefully constructed armor fractures because of him. He is not nothing to her.

And when you (inevitably) watch the movie again, and your POV is not limited to Grace's anymore but you can shift your view to Stratt ever so slightly, then suddenly the whole connecting-via-jokes business drops away to make room for the metaphorical meaning of "coming aboard".

"It is okay to be in your space? Am I allowed to be closer to you?"

And her answer?

He is already in her space, behind her defenses, and he doesn't even realize it (blissfully unaware about SO many things in fact). He is asking to be allowed inside the house while standing in the damn living room.

Of course watching a movie a second time will always deepen your understanding of the characters, but it's remarkable that Stratt's answer does not just gain a more differentiated level of meaning. Instead, it is transformed into it's opposite, from a very clear "I am not letting you in" to an equally clear "You've come in uninvited a long time ago", and both can be true at the same time!

God, the writing in this movie is KILLING ME

one thing that i really really enjoy about ryland grace’s character is that his main character flaw (cowardice)…

a.) isn’t generally perceived to be a “positive flaw” (eg. stubbornness, pride, martyrdom, etc (while these are all flaws, they’re generally warped as just behaviors and occasionally twisted back into being a “good thing” instead of being played as a genuine flaw))

and b.) isn’t ignored or erased by the narrative or fans

being a little cowardly and selfish is a KEY part of grace’s character. and those character flaws aren’t the common charismatic ones that we see in a lot of media these days! at least not in main characters- side characters may have similar flaws and cruxes, but so rarely does the main character in a narrative have a flaw like that that’s generally perceived as unattractive and doesn’t wrap around to somehow being a positive thing.

geace didn’t want to go on the mission because he didn’t want to die. this is self preservation. this is true.

grace also wasn’t moved enough by the entire rest of Earth’s population facing a mass extinction event to sacrifice himself. his student’s lives weren’t enough to convince him. in fact, when faced with being forced onto the ship, grace threatened to sabotage the entire mission and essentially condemn Earth to death. this is also true.

and while grace definitely grows through the progression of the book/movie (i really love how grace draws bravery and courage from the person he thought he was, but that’s a whole other text post), he pretty clearly still struggles with drawing past these clear character flaws that continuously test him throughout the book!!!

grace runs from the science field when he’s faced with backlash. he runs from phm when given the opportunity to save Earth. these two giant points make all of grace’s growth that much more impactful throughout the narrative!

i think holding these two fundamental truths of grace’s character beside one another even though they clash makes his character that much richer! let your characters have flaws that the reader/watcher might dislike! give your characters nuance and complexity!! let ryland grace make mistakes and fall into old habits and have to continuously work to find bravery within himself when he’s failed to do so before!!!!!

i dunno i just think it makes grace feel incredibly human and realistic. in a world full of carbon copy morally-grey characters and boring character traits, letting your main character be consistently flawed and struggle to act beyond those flaws is such a breath of fresh air.

totally i understand narratively why project hail mary ends with grace becoming a teacher again but ever since i saw the movie i haven’t been able to stop thinking about what a crazy move it is from the eridian perspective. like imagine if we had one (1) alien on earth and we liked him so much that we just let him have a class of schoolchildren to teach all the brand new alien science to, for fun. what’s the selection process for that classroom. do the adult eridian scientists wish they were in there

now we need the story of an impatient adult Eridian scientist, who happens to be very small in stature, and who comedically tries to fake being an Eridian child in order to get into Grace’s class and learn from/observe the alien in person..

Okay but like....maybe he goes to extra lengths to modulate his voice so it sounds like a child eridian....and move like a child eridian...but Grace doesn't need all that since he's still learning the language a bit and can't really discern all those differences yet.

All the kids see right through it tho.

Eridians must be absolutely amazed that Grace can be woken up before his sleep cycle is finished. They take advantage of this and fit the biodome's bedroom with a remotely-triggered alarm system, so if something ever goes wrong with the life support systems while Grace is asleep, they can wake him up and have him move to safety. But, being that their sleep is more like a deep dormancy, they WAY overestimate what it takes to forcibly wake someone up.

The first time they have to use it (over something stupid like a tiny ammonia leak), Grace wakes up to like three different foghorns and a hundred camera flashes going off at once and is like HOLY GEEZ THE APOCALYPSE IS UPON US
