I would have erased the memories of everyone who bore witness to this disaster of magic.

It stung. Maybe it shouldn't have, and on some level it didn't come as a surprise that Easthies stood by his convictions so imperturbably, but some stupid little part of Utowin had still held on to the hope that friends were an exception. That he was an exception. And that wasn't all – he had hoped for a better explanation than 'this is how it must be', something that went deeper than that, something that would reveal more of Easthies' true and private thoughts to him. (And perhaps let him glimpse a sense of regret.)

He clenched his fists, frustration, disappointment and other such lovely emotions tugging at his willingness to punch Easthies in the face for the coldness he showed him, but he restrained himself. He had to be better than that, especially since he'd already lost his temper a few moments ago, shoving him against the wall in anger. The mood to do so lingered, the thought of shaking this stubbornness out of him satisfying far to satisfying. Instead Utowin took a breath and slowly relaxed his hands. Regardless of what happened that night, Easthies was not his enemy – he refused to imagine a day on which he'd ever be – so they would find a way to settle their differences another way.

With two quick steps, Utowin was in front of Easthies again, and without bothering to change the frown on his face, he leaned in and, raising his hand to brush Easthies' hair from his face, pressed a brief (but somewhat aggressive) kiss to his forehead. Then, letting go just as swiftly, he reached down to pluck the plate with the flan from the food tray he'd brought and walked to the door. "Just for pissing me off, I'm confiscating your flan." Without allowing room for a response, he opened the door and stepped through. "...take some time to reflect while you're in here, Eas."

I need to talk about the fact that Utowin (supposedly) had no interest in celebrating his birthday but when he saw the others being lowkey sad that he wasn't interested in doing so despite their preparations he celebrated HARD.

I feel like Utowin would be good with animals. For one, he's the type to not mind rolling around in the dirt while playing with a companion animal, so he'd find a way to bond fast. He also likes animals because they don't judge you the same way humans do and many of them, if you don't mistreat them, are very loyal too (and loyalty is important to him).

He'd enjoy training e.g. a dog or bird or horse, because it would be a very hands-on trial-and-error approach. It's not the act of repetition or the difficulty of a task, or even the time it takes to learn something that bothers him, it's the tediousness and the inherent boredom of the method with which most things are taught that he simply cannot endure/deal with. So being outside with an animal, running around, doing something practical would not bore him for hours, even if it technically is work.

There's also something cathartic about helping a creature, that is so different from him that he can't just use language to teach it, learn and understand something. He has to find out what works for the animal and it feels like a success for both of them when it clicks.

P.S. ..something something about him feeling like he can take care of an animal and actually make a change by helping it in a way he can't with people.

With Easthies I'm wondering.. it'll probably turn out to be a secret third thing, but for now my working theories are that he is as strict and absolute as he is because he

is a sith

experienced some horrific forbidden magic and "learned" that being harsh with those who practice it is the only way to prevent the horrors it creates, even if sometimes that means being seemingly cruel in the moment. the driving force for his strictness is the fear of what he saw/experienced

similar to the above, but it was someone close to him (e.g. a parent) who used the forbidden magic and they had to be stopped (by him?) even if that felt impossible to do. the driving force for his iron conviction here would be that to falter in it now would force him to face the fact that maybe there would have been a way to save his loved one and that would be too painful, so instead he insists that this is the only way so no spark of doubt can creep in

Some thoughts on Utowin and how he sees himself that have plagued me all day.. canon might correct me at a later point, but from what I've seen so far I think he carries a rather complex form of low self-worth with him that has solidified over the years until it's become indistinguishable from his personality (to him). He is not in a fragile state, he is not on the verge of breaking down over it, he is not self-loathing (overtly) or has such low self-worth that he'd let others walk all over him – in fact he has multiple traits of someone with a seemingly good confidence in himself. He is sociable, chatty, daring, funny, cocky.. and I wouldn't say that's all just for show while deep down he thinks he's a loser and needs to pretend. That would be too simple.

There are things he is good at and things he can do; he does have traits that are worth something, he's smart, he's loyal, he is physically fit & strong, he gets shit done. It's just all.. eh. He's mediocre where it matters. He's lucky he found something he can throw himself at with all he has (the Knights) – but "all he has" is like 30% of what other people can give. Unlike most witches, he doesn't struggle with understanding or being able to learn some complex spells, he already struggles with sitting down and reading the damn books. He doesn't even get to the complex stuff. How was he ever going to be something great? He can barely scrape the surface. And after an entire childhood of that and all adults around him telling him repeatedly that "boys like him" won't ever amount to anything "unless they change" – a change that was completely unreachable to him (because nobody cared to find a way that helped him specifically) – he became a "man like that" and now that's who he is.

He's arranged himself with it, he's found something to do and someone to follow. But he doesn't see himself as great or outstanding in any way. He might see the basic usefulness of what he does, but it often feels like base level stuff. Why feel proud of something that most people could do? If he is good at something then it's nothing amazing to begin with. Achievements don't really feel like such, they're just something he didn't quit half-way through for once.

So the self-deprecating comments are like breathing to him at this point; he doesn't say them to get attention, he genuinely feels that way. Maybe there is some subconscious part of him that also says them to hear someone tell him it's not true – the little boy who never heard praise from e.g. his own father? – but the conscious part is his own inner voice that has learned to repeat what he knows to be true. He is not a good witch and he never will be. He is grateful for the Knights and his duties, because it's a ready-made path he can walk and someone else's orders he can follow and it means he doesn't have to think about all the grand discoveries and innovations and achievements he would fail at spectacularly if he even so much as tried.

The only thing that really makes him question these things he says about himself, like when he downplays himself or something he did, is when someone else criticizes that in the right way. Like Easthies saying he wouldn't trust just anyone to watch his back. It takes him aback, because while his own opinion of himself is crap, he values Easthies' opinion (in general), so to hear that his negative comments somehow end up insulting Easthies puts him in a bit of an uncomfortable box that forces him to think about his own automated self-rejection.
