Under the Radar Festival

Under the Radar (UTR) is an annual theater festival that spotlights international artists ranging from emerging talents to masters in the field. The festival is a wild mix of works by ensembles, solo artists, writers, and creators. UTR is a project of the Association of Performing Arts Presenters, produced by Mark Russell and The Public Theater in New York City. The ultimate goal of UTR is to offer a crash course in theater that is exciting, independent, and experimental, created by some of the most dynamic artists working today. Over the last 11 years, The Public’s UNDER THE RADAR FESTIVAL has presented over 181 companies from 39 countries. It has grown into a landmark of the New York City theater season and is a vital part of The Public's mission, providing a high-visibility platform to support artists from diverse backgrounds who are redefining the act of making theater. Widely recognized as a premier launching pad for new and cutting-edge performance from the U.S. and abroad, UTR has presented works by such respected artists as Elevator Repair Service, Nature Theater of Oklahoma, Gob Squad, Belarus Free Theatre, and Young Jean Lee. These artists provide a snapshot of theater today: richly distinct in terms of perspectives, aesthetics, and social practice, and pointing to the future of the art form.

The Under the Radar Festival Symposium Keynote Address by Kristy Edmunds, Executive and Artistic Director, Center for the Art of Performance at UCLA. Thursday, January 8, 2015. 9:30 am. The Public Theater, NYC.

"The Under the Radar Professional Symposium focuses on the global issues of producing and presenting theater. The two-day event features keynote speakers, a chance to see performances in a concentrated period of time, and formal and informal opportunities to meet colleagues and new artists.  The symposium is a pre-conference event of the Association of Performing Arts Presenters (Arts Presenters) and will be held in conjunction with the APAP|NYC 2015 conference. The dates of the 2015 symposium are January 8-9. Registration priority is given to presenting and producing organizations."

Under the Radar 2015: An interview With Co-Director Meiyin Wang

Tell us about your curatorial philosophy and some of the places you have been scouting for work?

I respond most to work that demands my attention; that makes me lean forward in my seat. That could be translated into work that has a sense of urgency -- whether it is about where we are in a cultural or political moment, or about a radical aesthetic position or about the risks the performers are taking on stage. I love work that is rigorous, that provokes, that irritates, that has a sense of play and that creates its own rules for its universe. It is a more intuitive approach, but really about responding to the artists' lines of investigation. We do not program the festival with a thematic line -- we respond to the artists and the work that we see. It is only during the festival that thematic and aesthetic lines reveals itself to us.
