Upcoming Lecture: Treasures and Tea: Beautiful Forms: Poetry in British Fin-de-siècle Magazines
Dr. Alison Chapman (Department of English)
Literary magazines of the Victorian fin-de-siècle were an important venue for crafting a new approach to poems as beautifully integrated visual and textual spaces. Special Collections has impressive holdings of magazines in this era, including Woman’s World (edited by Oscar Wilde), Atalanta, Pageant, and the Century Guild Hobby Horse. This talk will offer examples of how these magazines experimented with visual and textual design, and will suggest new ways of reading illustrated poetry in 1880s and 1890s ephemeral print culture that re-thinks conventional approaches to poetic form.
Date: February 7, 2018
Time: 1-2 p.m.
Location: Special Collections and University Archives, Mearns Centre for Learning - McPherson Library, Room A003
Treasures and Tea brings together the campus and the community to explore and share highlights from Special Collections and University Archives. Refreshments follow the informal talks.
