Upcoming Lecture: Treasures and Tea: Beautiful Forms: Poetry in British Fin-de-siècle Magazines

Dr. Alison Chapman (Department of English)

Literary magazines of the Victorian fin-de-siècle were an important venue for crafting a new approach to poems as beautifully integrated visual and textual spaces. Special Collections has impressive holdings of magazines in this era, including Woman’s World (edited by Oscar Wilde), Atalanta, Pageant, and the Century Guild Hobby Horse. This talk will offer examples of how these magazines experimented with visual and textual design, and will suggest new ways of reading illustrated poetry in 1880s and 1890s ephemeral print culture that re-thinks conventional approaches to poetic form.

In this talk, Dr. Bradley will describe rare materials from the Northwest and will discuss the value and importance of reading the literature of the West Coast.

Upcoming Lecture: Treasures and Tea: An Artist’s Book that is Ready for Anything: Paul Éluard, Joan Miró, and the Making of A Toute Épreuve

Dr. Daniel Mato (Professor Emeritus, Art History, University of Calgary)

In 1958 Paul Éluard and Joan Miró published A Toute Épreuve, an artistic collaboration featuring poetry by Éluard and woodcuts by Miró. In this talk Dr. Mato will discuss the collaboration between writer, artist, and their publisher, Gérald Cramer, in creating what is considered one of the most beautiful artist’s books of the twentieth-century.

The first of two talks this academic year on a mysterious item in the Bruce and Dorothy Brown Collection, one of UVic’s few Italian language manuscripts: a personal collection of culinary and medicinal recipes, charms, scrawled notes and doodles. In this strange and messy book are many secrets and delights. Dr. Williams Boyarin will reveal lost medieval poetry that lies, unnoticed and unseen until recently, in and beneath its pages.
