āMy parents got divorced after my little sister was born, like three years ago, I get you. They wanted to have her to fix all their problems and like⦠Having the common goal of wanting to have her helped them for a little bit but when she was born they got super frustrating and the rest of us were like āhey yāall are bad and me and we will leave if you donāt clean up your act.ā We were almost adults by then. I mean, me and Jeanette, sheās one of my sisters. And my mom has always been kind of the worst but my dad being bad is like brand new. I hate it.ā
Granted, he was away he was the one who was being a kid in this scenario, but he was grown now. āItās just frustrating, I mean, this whole shit with my dad. Heās not gonna understand and Iām not going back to him. What kind of guy kicks out his kid. I donāt deserve that shit.ā
Casey nods slowly, listening. āNo, man, you donāt deserve that shit. And you should do whatever you can to avoid moving back in with them, if heās going to treat you like that. Anyway, itāll be fun to have you stay at my place-- we can have movie nights and stuff. Itāll be a good break from the shit your dad has put you through.ā
He straightens the pen cup next to the cash register, frowning a little. āI never figured out if I was a save-the-marriage baby or an accident baby. I have a hard time imagining that my dad actually was interested in having a second kid.ā
boss
āItās fucking the worst. And my family is just⦠My dad is acting like this is no big deal or whatever but he doesnāt give a shit. Heās justā¦ā He let out a groan. āSorry, this is uh⦠Itās just a whole mess right now, and Iām just fucking mad about it.ā He shrugged. āSorry for dumping this on you.ā
He frowned. āOh, shit thatās shitty. Are your parents like divorced or something?ā
Casey offers a sympathetic smile. He pulls out a disinfectant wipe to wipe down the cash register just for good measure. āNo worries, man. I have a great mom. But yeah, they got divorced before my first birthday. Itās okay to be frustrated with your family shit-- and you can totally talk to me about it, I donāt mind. I get where youāre coming from. Iām not the kind of person who really has any enemies or anything like that, but my dad really grinds my gears. So I understand how frustrating it is to have bad shit with your parent.ā
He wads up the spent wipe and tosses it into the trash. āThe main thing with my dad is heās really juvenile, I guess? My parents were teenagers when they had my brother, so my mom grew up really fast, but my dad just sort of stayed a teenager forever, kind of."
boss
God, he really was going t have to deal with everything heād fucked up. He didnāt want to break it all to Joly that he was a total fucking moron with all this shit. āYeah, no problem fam. I really appreciate that, like honestly. You have no idea how great it is to me.ā
His phone rings and he immediately declines the call. He knows his dadās ringtone, and heās not really ready to talk to his father at the moment. āLet me know what they say, I can do shit around the house or whatever.ā
āNo worries, man. My roommate Brandonās cousin slept on our couch for like three weeks a while back, so Iām sure everyone will be fine with it,ā he says, offering his coworker a smile. āIt sucks when your family kind of sells you short like that. I totally have the kind of dad who would kick me out without a second thought too. I mean, he would if, like, I ever lived at his house. Which I havenāt. Ha.ā
boss
He blushed. This was a lot more kindness than he deserved from Joly but it was fine. He was so deprived of love though he would take it. And Joly made a fair point. The park bench was not the easiest place to sleep. āThat would be really nice but uh⦠I gotta be up front. I canāt pay rent or anything right now if thatās something you need from me⦠Iāve got some money issues.āĀ
Casey shakes his head. āNo worries, man. I have an air mattress with your name on it.ā
He canāt help but wonder what the guyās Money Issues could be-- Klaus works more hours a week than Casey, and since he was living with his family, it wasnāt like he probably had tons of monthly expenses. But whatever. Not his business.
āI should run it by my roommates, but Iām sure theyāll be fine with it. Theyāre chill.ā
boss
Now Jolyās got him going. Being able to be with someone who gets sit, someone with a shitty enough father that Boss can talk about it and not feel awkward. āItās so fucking annoying because he acts like heās the mature one, you know? Like what heās doing is āfor my own good.ā and then he kicks me out? Sorry, sleeping on a park bench isnāt good for me!ā
Well he hadnāt meant to spill the beans that far. Fuck. He blushes, feeling a little sheepish for getting so into himself. āSorry, I got riled. I donāt have a new place yet.ā
āNo, dude, thatās totally fair-- kicking you out isnāt doing you any fucking favors,ā Casey says, frowning hard-- it rings too true of how his own dad treats him. āAre you seriously sleeping on a park bench? That fucking sucks. You should come stay with me. My place is kind of in a sketchy area and itās small and stuff, but it beats a park bench, dude.ā
boss
He smiled. He liked Joly, he was a good kid. He really didnāt need all the shit that was happening in Klausā life now, especially since he was so determined to help people. But Klaus needed to vent and all his other friends would have a need of being shitty about it - they were in the hole too. He was debating getting out. Maybe the outside opinion would open him up.
āI actually just moved out of his place. I mean, like there was this whole thing and he was super unreasonable and kicked me out.ā He hopes he hadnāt mentioned going home earlier this week when they had worked together, but he had started digging. He needed to let it out.
"Oh, yeah?ā Casey asks, tossing the last of the disinfectant wipes in the trash and pumping hand sanitizer into his palms. āThat really sucks, dude. Sorry to hear it. My dad has had his unreasonable moments too. Sucks having to be the... I donāt know. Mature one, I guess-- when youāre dealing with your own parent. Did you get a place on your own?ā
boss
āYou definitely can put that on your resume. Itās a lot of shit - I feel like people arenāt ever going to stop puking in this place.ā He chugged his monster really fast and looked around the room. Thank god there were no customers.
He had to make the choice with how much he was willing to share. āItās been really fucking rough couple days. I had to deal with my fucking dad doing some bullshit.ā
The easygoing grin that had previously lit Caseyās face falls. He hasnāt known Klaus for long-- heās only been working at Louisā for a couple months, and they only recently started sharing shifts since James kicked up dirt about being on the night shift all the time. Though Casey never has a hard time getting along with others, and making friendly conversation, theyāve never actually ever, like, Expressed Feelings to each other.
āIām sorry to hear that, dude. I have a bastard dad too. I know how it can be,ā he says. āAnd you live with him, donāt you? So itās harder to get space.ā
boss
At least he had Joly during this shift. He didnāt know what heād do if he would have to deal with James talking about his fucking Quidditch team or some other bullshit - Joly was nice. āWell, good news. We got the place picked up. Letās get some other stuff, you know. Letās do the other cleaning shit.ā
He smiled at the other and grabbed a candy bar and a Monster. āItās definitely one of those days fam. Hopefully no one else will do anything else.ā
Casey returns the grin. āHereās hoping. But I should probably get used to dealing with puke if Iām going to work at a hospital. Ha. I should put that on my resumĆ©-- experience with vomit.ā
He goes to disinfect the front counter and the cash register. āWhatās been going on with you, man?ā
boss
[text: joly] it happens to some people but i donāt think youād be able to text super lucid if you did. Isnāt there like a 10 sec window?
[text: joly] if you want i can come pick you up and all four of us can have a bomb time. They think youāre cool!
[text: boss] heart attacks have warning signs dude they can be PREVENTED
[text: boss] plz just have fun w ur sisters i dont want 2 ruin ur thing!!!!!!!!!!! ill hang out with u guys tomorrow like we planned dont worry about me ill figure it out
boss
Klaus catches it and puts it on over his face. Christ, this is was something he didnāt want to deal with, he already had so much to deal with! He didnāt know what to do with all this bullshit. āI hate this. I fucking hate this.ā He whined, getting down to usher vomit into a back. He wasnāt trying to be as clean as his friend.
āIām going to fucking murder James. Knowing him this is probably his goddamn puke and heās just embarrassed it was all over the store.ā Heās not usually so mean, but he was tired and he was sad and he slept in a fucking park. āIām going to fucking murder him.ā He repeats, grabbing another trashbag and the lemon clean up spray.
āAnything else happen today? Or is it just going to get up from here?ā
Casey frowns a little bit. The puke is all gone, so he starts in with disinfectant wipes. āYeah, ha, maybe. I mean, I just got here a few minutes before you did, bro. Who knows whatās been going on here. The night is young-- anything could happen.ā
He throws the wipes in the trash bag and knots it before peeling off the rubber gloves. āThanks for helping, though.ā
boss

[text: boss] no dude fuck i forgot u had ur sisters!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! forget abt it im fine webMD is just scaring me
[text: boss] i mean its unrealistic for me to have a heart attack right im 25 and i exercise and shit but the warning signs are there yknow
[text: boss] totally ridiculous right?????
@va1etudinarian || make a man
The gas station was a safe haven at the time being - from his father, his mother, his home - his lack of one. He had no where to go where he truly felt safe, but the gas station felt safe. Louisā was the rock he needed to stop himself from falling apart. Also, he desperately needed the money now, so he was going to have to start working night shifts more often.
None of that was allowed to bother him through the day though - not when he had things to do, people to see. he already had a late start in life and he certainly didnāt want his coworker to see him in despair. There werenāt ready for a total Clerks moment. Boss just had to make it through the night with nothing happening and heād be fine. He could keep answering his phone, deal with the money situation and the dad situation.
And of course as soon as he entered the building, the gas station was dealing with itās own puke situation. The floor, the walls. It was horrible in color and in smell.Ā āFuck!ā Boss grunted. This was going to be a long night.
Casey is already exhausted by the time he gets to work-- he maybe had a late start to his day after staying up too late with R and a ziplock bag of weed cookies and an Itās Always Sunny in Philadelphia marathon, maybe barely woke up in time for class, maybe dropped a huge stack of flash cards on a busy subway and spent far too long collecting them-- but he grins and bears it. He changes into his work uniform polo and heads to Louisā, ready to spend the night at the gas station, truly burning the candle at both ends--
And then, right when he gets there, the previous attendant hurries off-- and a vomit situation makes itself known.
Heās maybe a third of the way through cleaning it up when his shiftmate arrives. He forces a cameraderic grin as Klaus huffs out a swear.
āI know, dude. I donāt know what happened. It was like this when I got here. Guess James didnāt want to clean it up.ā He grabs another nose and mouth mask cover thing-- he should figure out what these are called if heās going to be a nurse-- and tosses it to Klaus to save his nose.
