"...Hey." And there he is, larger than life. It's still weird to see him so- casual. Many of the dreams he'd had of Sora were filled with him running around, talking with people, fighting.

Finding out that Sora was just a normal guy had been the biggest twist of them all.

Okay, maybe he should've planned this out a little more.

"You want to walk around a bit? We hid some skateboards near the tram stop." Or they could do something else? He knows how he'd like the day to end- everything else is up in the air.

"Sure, that sounds good. Heh, maybe you can give me a few pointers for skateboarding-- I'm used to surfing."

He was trying not to feel like this was awkward. It was just a small start, is all. Sora felt like there was a bit of a cloud over them for the moment, though... Maybe it was just him. There was... A fair amount of history between the two of them, after all. And not all of it was very good.

He silently reassured himself that it was just his nerves, hands moving to rest against the back of his head-- his usual casual stance, "I'm ready whenever you are."

"I know." Oof. Wrong thing to say. Roxas holds back from the urge to cringe, spinning on his heels and leading the way into town. "Don't worry about it. I can spot you."

His lips purse as he tosses a few ideas on what they can talk about around in his mind- some things are probably too invasive. Others are... difficult subjects. Not exactly the kind of thing he can bring up lightly.

"So, it's all over. What're you guys gonna do now?" Is this the end of the adventures? Time to go back to school, act like normal kids?

They’d made a promise…but Xion could be awfully sneaky when she was trying to get out of something. So far, he’s looked all over Twilight Town, Neverland; pretty much everywhere he knows they know, and a few more besides.

So by the time he finally finds her, Roxas is pretty ruffled. He’s not really paying much attention to whether or not she looks different than usual, he’s just-

“There you are!” Going to grab for their wrist the moment he’s close enough, with every intention of swinging back to Twilight Town by corridor if she concedes. Honestly, Xion. “Look, it’s just clothes shopping. It’s not that bad.”

He promised they’d find something Xion would like– that they’d find their style. And he’s going to do that. Today.

they'd been in the middle of wandering around aimlessly when they're suddenly grabbed, pulling xion out of their thoughts. it's the weekend, after all, and they had so many plans for it, only to find they didn't really want to do any of them...

had they had real plans made?? they can't recall, but they've been so busy lately with extra training and studies - maybe it just slipped their mind. ..although, clothes shopping...? maybe they'd forgotten on purpose...

"W-wait, why do we have to do that?? It's such a lovely day..!" clothes shopping is inside! better to stay outside!

"You can't just wear that coat everywhere." If he was honest, Roxas would be happy if they stashed those things away forever, even if they're too useful not to keep. "Don't you want to try wearing something that isn't leather? And different colors?"

Black might be their color, but it sure isn't his. Besides, there's plenty of colors neither of them have tried!

"We won't shop forever, just a few hours. C'mon. Please?" Does he have to give the puppy eyes because he will, damn it.

What is your favorite board game?

"Board game?" Well that's... a hard question. Has he ever played a board game? Sora has, but he's not giving Sora's answer as his own.

Roxas spends probably too much time thinking about it, before slowly giving a shrug. "I dunno. Is that something I should try? Do darts count?"

The search for Sora takes them everywhere. Weeks after his disappearance, they’ve practically scoured all the worlds they know…except one. Really, they should’ve checked it first, except no one really wanted to go there.

In the end, Roxas is the only one to volunteer. Axel reluctantly agrees to accompany him, which is how they find themselves back at the Keyblade Graveyard, walking through piles of dead blades that had been flung around like debris for miles.

And the closer they get to the empty maze Xehanort had crafted, the more Axel hedges away, until Roxas steps inside on his own with a roll of his eyes. It’s just the remains of a battleground. No one’s gonna be here.

There’s certainly nothing terrifying about it.

.. He had certainly hoped to be dead and gone - to fulfill his purpose.

To potentially return back to the Whole, and not be left like this. But .. no. He wasn't so lucky. Why? Why was he left to suffer?

He hadn't even been reunited with his brothers.

Vanitas could just imagine the cruel laughter that would spill from his Master's mouth - thank whatever the fuck he's dead. Which he could only assume had happened. He hadn't tried to move from this area since discovering himself to be conscious again. Loose threads lingered within his mind from the battle onwards from when he had been defeated, but .. it was mostly a blur.

A crunch of gravel .. A pit of fear almost dared to manifest within the boy's stomach, before he tried to force an Unversed from forming. But then again .. he didn't have to try now, did he ..? Especially since he was away from the asshole.

But old habits died hard.

''Who's there?'' He instantly demanded, his keyblade shimmering into his grip as he pushed himself off the ground. His helmet had been long since discarded - it laying off to the side somewhere.

That voice makes his stomach lurch; it's right, but it's wrong. Too low, too gravelly. Too dark. It's still enough to have Roxas moving swiftly, rounding the corner and coming to a halt with a spray of dirt at his heels, staring down the other end of a Keyblade into a face that is equal parts right, equal parts wrong.

Ventus had spoken about him, a little. This would have to be...

"So you're Vanitas."

Fantastic. Oathkeeper is quick to appear in his hand, raised in a similar fashion. Pointed out in a grip that's all wrong, on a face Vanitas knows all too well.

His first impressions of Xehanort aren’t great. Xemnas was always a figure of authority in his mind– someone who could inspire others to follow, if by nothing else but fear. This…old man, with slumped shoulders and age creasing his face?

Less impressive. Doesn’t mean Roxas is willing to underestimate him, but even so. 

The blond doesn’t blurt out the questions others might’ve asked. There’s no but why are you still here!? No how?! Just a teen that slowly walks across the length of the edge of the room, eyes fixed on his opponent.

Neither have drawn their weapon, so maybe the better term is… antagonist. Evil back from the dead. Again.

No one ever stays dead when they should. Roxas included.

It's strange. As much as he wanted to think Ventus was the one who stood before him - no, that wasn't one bit true. Even if he had considered Ventus to be a vessel at one point ..

He shook his head momentarily to clear his thoughts.

Roxas. The Nobody of Sora.

Files had been on the boy back in the Castle That Never Was. ..Did that world survive after all that had happened? Or would it just be added to the list of dying worlds? Probably the latter, he mused for just a mere second.

Nevertheless, there seemed to be a sort of understanding in between the two - hence the lack of a keyblade shoved into his face.

But then again ... there was no true point of drawing his own weapon, same as for the other. The Second Keyblade War had passed ..

And failed.

"Roxas," a simple word tore out from his throat.

Look at that. He got it memorized.

"That's what you called me." To hide the Recusant Sigil in plain sight. To keep an eye on him, no matter what. That resentment is bottled away; tucked behind fixed concentration as he waits for one wrong move.

So long as the air between them remains watchful, and nothing more, Roxas' will slowly relaxed from his prowling movements, head tilting in quiet assessment.

"Is this just you, or a replica?" They'd assumed all of them had been used... or destroyed.

They haven’t…hung out yet.

Not to say they haven’t been around each other. They’ve done that plenty. Everyone had wanted to spend time on Destiny Islands, or checking out Land of Departure for the first time. But that was everyone. Axel and Xion, Ventus, Terra, Aqua. Kairi and (ugh) Riku, so did those times count?

Maybe. Maybe Roxas is just thinking too hard. Either way, he’s the one who decided to invite Sora to spend time together in Twilight Town, so he’s just going to have to deal with it. It’s not gonna awkward, or uncomfortable. They’re just- two people who are probably overdue in getting to know each other properly. Right.

Sighing under his breath, Roxas jams his hands in his pant pockets, trying to keep himself from getting too lost in thought. Sora said he was going to take the Gummi Ship to the Mysterious Tower, first, so he’ll probably waltz out the doors any moment, now.

Better pay attention if he doesn’t want to look like he got here hours ago- which he did, but that’s on Roxas.

He couldn't say he wasn't nervous.

He'd had one-on-one encounters with Roxas before, but almost all times were in the middle of... Well, chaos. He'd fought alongside Roxas, fought against him, but never just... Hung out. Not to say he never wanted to. He wanted to know who Roxas was, as himself and not just the knowledge that... He was Sora's Nobody. Still, he wanted to let the blond reach out first, unsure if the other was really ready.

Well, now or never.

He made sure the books he'd stolen borrowed from Yen Sid's tower were tucked away into his bag, put on a smile and made his way through the doors of the tower. His smile brightened a bit as he saw the blond waiting, though part of him did wonder if he'd been waiting long.

"Roxas! Hey!"

It was almost like they had suddenly appeared behind him, hands behind their back as they leaned forward some. Pale blue eyes scanned the alleyway curiously before they straightened up. They do not bother to explain their behavior, only studying him quietly.

"Ah-!" He flinches involuntarily, whirling around to stare at the stranger, who's already staring at him. Where did they even come from? He was so sure he'd been careful about not being spotted by the residents...

"Why not?"

They don't have the social means to make a good excuse, so they simply... don't. "There's danger up ahead, I saw it." as if they didn't appear behind him. "It's better to go around the block and avoid this place all together."

"What kind of danger?" Structural? Environmental? Or... something that doesn't belong here? "If it's that bad, someone should take care of it."

And he's more capable than most of the people in this world would be. Even before they have the chance to explain, he's already starting to walk. Right in the direction he was just told not to go.

He really doesn’t want to hunt down Xigbar.

Roxas remembers plenty about their missions together; the old guy had always been wily. There’s so much he’d said back then that went over the blond’s head; plenty that still does.

So he really isn’t excited to try and locate him, if he’s even survived. That someone like him has been sighted in Radiant Garden needs to just be a coincidence. Stalking through the streets, his eyes flick to every ledge and high point he can see, mouth set in a frown. He really, really doesn’t want to do this.

They’re all going to get shot. Then Roxas is coming back to life, so he can tell them all he told them so.

Months of looking for Sora, and what do they have to show for it? Nothing.

It’s been chafing at Roxas for a while. It’s been pulling at his patience since the first second Sora disappeared, slowly leaving him teetering over a knife’s edge of anger and resentment he has no idea what to do with. It’s easier to be angry than to be– anything else, so he is.

Roxas is angry. And conveniently? Riku just happens to be there.

“Sparring.” No hi. No excuse me. When Roxas walks up to him, it starts with a demand. “You and me. Right now.”

He’s never been afraid of the dark.

Maybe he just spent too much time in it, before he was aware enough to realize he should be. It’s not uncomfortable. It’s not unknown. He’s spent what little life he has traversing it on the daily, running from mission to mission.

The Realm of Darkness is almost as familiar as his own face in the mirror. It’s not the first time he’s been here. It certainly won’t be the last. The Heartless don’t really know what to make of this stranger in their midst. Half twitch and scurry around the edges of his path, either curious or uninterested. Others rush for the attack. He deals with the latter in brutally efficient fashion, and ignores the rest.

Roxas isn’t here for them. He’s here for- somebody else.
