So there's currently a sort of quandary that I'm facing. A new friend gives you their number, with a request to text. You do so, and no response is forthcoming. So, there are four obvious possibilities. One, that the number was fictitious, and they would rather you didn't question this fiction to save face for all around. Two, that the number was genuine, but that they are ignoring you, which is similar to one save that the number is easy to remember because it's the same one, and you simply have to ignore future communiques. Three, the number is fine, and they're busy, phone has broken, or some other minor error. And four, the number is wrong, but simply due to a mistake, and the person is potentially wondering why you haven't been in contact.
In the first two situations they do not wish to speak to you, which either belies a very rapid change of mind, or that they in some way felt obligated to provide their number. Having not been in the situation of anyone asking for my number more than once, I can't speak with any authority about the issue of trying to dissuade the persistent. But volunteering one's number seems to suggest at least some level of interest in further communication. Probably.
So if either three or four apply, and you yourself would like to see this person again, then it seems reasonable to want to pursue other means of contact. In the past this might have been through mutual friends, letters, or other such means, with the benefit of often being proximate rather than direct. Responding to a letter or, now, email, again requires less personal contact if you're trying to keep someone at a distance.
But now we have Facebook. And if they gave you a full name and you remember them even a little bit most people can be easily found within one search. Click box, type name, press enter, find friend. The website has become so common that it becomes almost strange NOT to find someone on there.
With all this being said, there remains one thing.
Privacy.
To what extent should one's Facebook page be considered "private"? You've uploaded it in the full knowledge and, indeed, intent that it be viewed by others. Generally those who are already your friends, but since it's nice to make a new connection people often don't limit their privacy settings to ONLY their friends, allowing others to view their profile. Even Google searches can return a Facebook page reference. So does this count as doing something wrong?
While I was at uni one of my flatmates went on at some length about her online handle and about her favourite forum. Out of curiosity I searched for her username on said forum to see what sort of things she was discussing, and discovered that several of the things were attacks on myself. I subsequently confronted her about this, and was then labelled as "creepy" by her.
I feel that if you post something in a public forum, one that anyone can read, and you make a great deal of your username, then it should come as no shock when people see something written by you and make note that you were the author. And if you have said something unkind or objectionable, why should I not be permitted to call you on it? I haven't hacked or gain illicit access to something, you typed it in the full knowledge that it could and would be read by strangers. Why does hiding behind a handle guarantee you immunity from comment if someone makes a connection? If you make a statement you should be prepared to stand by it, regardless of context.
So with all this, and in the full acceptance that MANY of us will look at the Facebook profiles of those with whom we are not yet firm friends, why is it still deemed unseemly to admit the fact? Is it because it feels that something has been betrayed when someone admits to essentially "finding out about you"? And while I know it's different to asking others about you, why in this age of public sharing and information do we still treat them as something so completely different?
Reconnecting
Over the past couple of moths I've managed to reconnect with a few people I'd all but lost touch with. You know the sort of thing, still aware of each other's existence, friends on Facebook, but with your relationship with them sort of "on hold pending further inquiries". Maybe some sporadic contact, but nowhere near enough to call an active friendship or otherwise.
Then you have a conversation that seems the same as the "This will probably be us for another long while" type ones you've had before, but somehow it takes off rather better. Maybe you're both in the right frame of mind, maybe it's finally the case that you have time to reflect on what made you talk to them in the first place, and how you feel about it being gone. Because no "end" happened, there's more a tendency to have a sort of vague sense of regret that you don't talk so much any more, and to wonder why not.
If there is someone that you feel like you've lost touch with for some reason but that you want to see again, send them a message apropro of nothing. Just a "Hi", something to remind them of your existence. Maybe they thought you didn't want to talk to them, or just couldn't think of a good reason to make the attempt.
Either way, send someone a message. If nothing comes of it, then you've lost maybe a few minutes of your time. And if they say "Heya" back, maybe you'll regain a friend.
However it turns out, at least you can say to yourself that you tried.
Better than nothing :)

Spending Time
Isn’t it nice to spend time with people, especially of the opposite gender? Ones that you aren’t trying to hook up with, and who relate to the way you feel? (This post fuelled by alcohol :-P) It brings a whole new perspective on things, and helps you feel more comfortable in a whole range of ways. In the same way that traditionally women enjoy having gay male friends, I think it’s nice to have a female gay friend. Not because they are lesbian, but because it removes the overt sexual element to the conversation. You can share experiences and thoughts without the focus on trying to bed the other, and it’s genuinely relaxing and nice to know that she is my friend first, and to be apart from the pressure of “Am I funny, smart, or interesting enough to impress her?” Plus she is currently playing with my tail, which is making me gently melt. I don’t want her to stop, because I just love the careless affection :-) *hugs*

Why yes, I DO enjoy 40k :)
Every so often I'm reminded that our body really does put itself back together after damage, and for just a short while you get to think of yourself as a really, really low-speed Necron. Aside from the whole "metal body" thing. Wait, we have iron in our blood! Close enough ^_^
Fairly Young Continuations
So, I now have a Tumblr blog. Which I am somewhat obliged to contribute to in some capacity, because it exists. Hmmm.
So, why should people care what I have to say? Not entirely sure about that. I haven't really achieved great fame. fortune and success yet (If I had, then someone else would be writing this. Probably.) I suppose that like a lot of people I just like the idea of an outlet for some of my thoughts, somewhere to lay them down. I do find that sitting down to write through something does help clarify my own thoughts, simply because I have to find some way to articulate them in words, rather than sidestepping the problem.
Who am I? The somewhat cliche but accurate answer is that I'm not entirely sure as yet. I like Magic: The Gathering and gaming in general, certainly, though I find that a lot of games hold my attention less these days. Last one I played compulsively to completion was Tomb Raider. Lots of game I end up playing for a while, and then break off about two-thirds of the way through and then only complete much later. This probably says more about me than it does the games.
I'm currently trying to find some sort of direction for myself. I'm interested in a lot of things, but not driven by many, and those that I am really drawn by don't seem to be terribly helpful for finding a career. I just don't really know what I want to do.
This really applies quite broadly across my life. I'm just not sure about where I'm going. At the risk of this turning into an attempt at an eloquent whine, I'm just not very happy about many things. I've yet to maintain a relationship longer than six months, and I feel lonely a lot. I have rather screwy mindsets in that regard, some of which I put down to the efforts of past exes, most of which I put down to my own need to improve past them. Which can be challenging.
At the moment I'm trying to figure out where my interests lie in regards to subcultures. I've been to Torture Garden in Edinburgh twice, and loved it both times, but I wouldn't describe myself as being deeply into the "whips and chains" side of things. I'm a reasonably gentle person, and I just haven't found a good balance in that regard. I've also more recently started exploring the furry fandom, and to that end have acquired some fox ears and tail, both of which I love. My main interest relates to the art, most of which I find wonderful, with the added quirk that gender doesn't seem to be any sort of factor in my appreciation of it. When there are so many anthropomorphised species, what does it matter if both are male? A sexy wolf and a cute tiger together can look attractive regardless of any other factors. The other thing that I find a bit odd but nice is that being rubbed behind my furry ears is very relaxing and theraputic, and stroking my own tail is similar. They may not be a true part of my body, but I can still have a connection to them, one that I want to explore, and to find others that share my views. Will be nice to meet people that I can relate to about it.
So, with this "stream of consciousness" wall of text basically done, I hope that you've read this far. I like to have my words and thoughts read, and even if the final verdict is "Been said before, not very special", at least I can know that I've created something that someone else has experienced. I think I spend too much time just consuming the work and words of others, it feels good to write some of my own.
And who knows, someone might like my words :)
In the absence of knowing how most people run their blogs, I'd like to hear what people have to say about my daubs. If you like it, hate it (Although invitations to "Please kill yourself you write so bad" are a tad unproductive), or just want to say something to me. I will try to think of something to say in the future, and naturally all messages are welcome.
Hope you have a good day wherever and whoever you are.
