briefly pursuing a career in animation radicalized me on this. So many stories from the industry about how you have to start with your character design as dark as possible, because INEVITABLY you'll get "notes" from higher-ups asking you to make them lighter.

In a class about making a pitch bible my teacher once role-played as a shitty executive with a classmate, pressing them in intentionally abrasive ways about why they made their characters diverse. He emphasized that we had to learn to defend these things, because the racism in the industry is extremely deliberate.

i don't like how Marmeladov is always viewed as "that guy in the tavern that won't stop yapping" because he was actually a very useful plot device for Raskolnikov's development. on the one side after receiving his mother's letter about Dunya's upcoming marriage he saw what was wrong with it because Marmeladov had told him about his daughter's fate; "do you realise the Luzhin kind of cleanliness is just the same as Sonya's cleanliness, perhaps even worse". and when Marmeladov got run over by a horse and Raskolnikov was nearby having decided to commit suicide he was reminded of how finite and real death is and therefore decided to continue; "the sensation might be comparable to that experienced by a man who has been sentenced to death and suddenly told he's been reprieved"
