i was rereading parts of aftg and am currently giggling about how genuinely more insane neil gets on every reread. this is the scene that got me this time:

Andrew's mouth gave a violent twitch, a grimace he forcibly repressed, and he finally looked up. The darkness in his stare almost took Neil's breath away. Fast on the heels of shock was a bolt of triumph. Andrew had been back from Easthaven for almost two weeks, and this was the first sign that there was anything real going on behind that blank mask. Neil would have preferred to see the real Andrew under safer circumstances, but knowing he could be reached was a desperate relief.

"Fuck you," Andrew said.

The edge in his voice had every hair on Neil's arm standing on end. Neil held Andrew's stare, silently daring that anger to break against him instead of Allison.

like, andrew is furious, and neil is over here like "ha! you do feel things! now i can emotionally poke you with a stick until you snap!" and also swooning about the glint of murder in his eyes. he was not kidding about wanting to see andrew lose control. which, objectively, is very insane of him. oh and also "silently daring that anger to break against him instead of allison" is another mark in the insanity column. what a weird little freak he is. andrew never stood a chance

one of my favorite moments from aftg is the one where andrew is covering neil's wounds with a trash bag and tape (way too much tape, in neil's opinion), not only for the intimacy and domestic feeling around it, but also because i like to imagine andrew's flow of thoughts behind it. i am terrible at it and i have not once managed to understand how his little mind works, but he heard abby told neil to cover the wounds with plastic and he went to look for said plastic to take care of it. what was he thinking from the moment he got to his room (after spending the night with neil in a blanket in his living room while matt slept right beside neil and neil studied andrew's face until falling asleep) to the moment he went back to neil's with the bag? and then, when he is actually covering him up, you can FEEL how close they actually are. and it is crazy because they don't say a word to each other (well, neil says he isn't wearing anything under the hoodie, but that's it). idk idk idk i just love it so much
