his--diamondsĀ started following you
Link stared curiously up at the other, eyebrows knitting into a scowl. He couldn't remember a previous encounter with this man before... but something told him he was bad news. "Who are you?"
āFor the most part, trying to keep myself alive.ā An insecure chuckle escaped through his words as he reached up to rub the back of his neck uncomfortably. In all honesty, he wouldnāt have been able to explain his own habits to his friend, for the reason being that he himself didnāt know. He hadnāt ever given much thought to his reckless adventuringā he simply did what was commanded of him. Although more so often that not nowadays, he found himself following his own lead.Ā
Link wasnāt exactly the most⦠perceptive, to say the least. But when he found the other male suddenly had dropped to his knees, fingers grippedĀ strenuously through his tamed slate blue locks, the blondās eyes widened. Had he said something to put the other male in a state of such distress? Although he hadnāt thought he had said anything that could possibly result in such conflict, such obvious agony that corrupted the princeās expressionā¦
āMarthā¦?ā He whispered in a hushed tone, although the sound of confusion in his voice didnāt cease to make itself know. Link wasĀ cautious, as he slowly approached the other male that had hunched himself over the ground. He himself was in a shock, as a result of Marthās unexpected reaction. The prince had always appeared so strong, so noble⦠what could have possibly lead to this? But Link did know that if he wasnāt careful, he knew could hit another nerve and make the situation worse. However, he couldnāt stand there and watch as the other slowly fell to shambles in his presence, even if he had tried. It was in his blood to help others, by whatever means he was physically capable of.
āWhatās wrong?ā He asked, as calmly as he could manage. Maybe if he appeared to have a level head on his own shoulders, it would be of some reassurance to the other. But it was rather difficult, that was, holding back the endless number of questions that scratched at the back of his head, desperately trying to escape, as well as the concern that laced arctic orbs. He Ā took small, diligent steps closer to the other, a small frown accompanying curious eyes as the sound hopeless sobs rang their way through the heroās ears.Ā
The royal opened his mouth to respond but quickly shut it once more to avoid making the situation any worse than it already was for him and his friend. If he did go with him, he would probably end up fretting over him the entire time, and he saw that now. Of course, he was better than right after, and he knew the other male would get injured. Still, he would be sure to keep something on him to heal him if needed. He wasnāt suffocating. His entire army knew that, but he did like keeping everyone in their best state.
Marth rubbed his eyes with a gloved hand, trying to regain a noble look or one as close to it as possible. He was king above anything else. That was what he lived by and how he saw himself. This wasnāt how he was supposed to be acting and yet, Shiida. If she hadnāt taken arms with a fool like him, he would have one more friend and possibly a queen. Getting over a person was one thing. Getting over everything that he had missed along with the guilt of letting people die for him was another matter. Even if his heart and mind were open due to the advice of his counsel, it didnāt make death an any less painful thing.
A few more tears fell, rolling down his cheeks and adding to his miserable appearance. After this, he would need to wash up and possibly hide his face until back to normal. He could feel the others gaze rest on him and felt as if it was going to burn a hole through him from more guilt that arose. For all he knew, Link thought it was his fault as it seemed others always took the blame when the king was the one in question or in these situations in general. Holding his breath, he forced himself to quiet down to the point where his cries were inaudible, and he got to his feet with a small sway as if unable to find his center of balance. āHow may I help you?ā He asked, voice even quieter than normal and breaks between each word. His voice rang with clear sorrow, and he was unable to hold his head up on his shoulders.
The blonde-haired male deserved to have a friend that could protect those they wanted to, that could actually help him in a time of need or save the day in an adventure. Hero of wars or not, he still couldnāt look past his mistakes to see the great he had done for so many people. āN-nothing,ā the Altean royal replied with a long sigh to drown out another desperate whine that sounded from his throat. Normally bright, happy eyes were now glassy, red and flicked to look over his shoulder at Link, pulling his hands from his face to force a smile.
Link frowned as theĀ agitatedĀ whimpers continued to escape the other, as Link's conflicted thoughts racked his brain for some form of help. It obviously wasn't nothing, something had set a trigger off in Marth's mind, and it had likely been Link's fault. And he knew that, whatever it was, he most likely wouldn't be willing to talk about it so openly. After all, they hadn't known each other very well, if fact -- this was most likely the most out and personal either of the two had been with each other. If discussing the issue aloud would make matters worse, well... maybe it was best to leave it alone. "But... Marth..." He argued, eyebrows pulling together to form a scowl.
What was he to do...? He was supposed to be a hero, wasn't he? No, he was a hero. But for some reason, Link just couldn't figure out how he could have possibly salvaged this situation for the life of him. He should have been able to stop his feel from moving forward as they did, positioning the blond at an angle which hovered just over the other male. However, at this point he was simply running on his gut feeling alone.Ā
Link knelt to the ground slowly, facing the now desperate looking Prince from a slight angle. Never in a million years had he expected to see this man in particular at a point of such weakness. He looked up to him, and in fact, on many occasions, he awed over the undying strength he saw in the blue-haired male. He hadn't thought it was possible for anything to make him falter. But-- it seemed the Prince had been more human than Link had expected. Marth was just as human as he was himself, after all.
"I--..." He would have apologized, for whatever problems he had strewn upon the male that could possibly lead to this. However he was cut off, by theĀ uneasiness of his own voice, and the look of utter hopelessness in the other's eye that caught Link's attention. He just wanted to be of some comfort to him... But before Link could even begin to process his own actions, he had already leaned forward, to wrap both of his arms around Marth's shoulders from the side.

"Hey there... thanks for following." Link greeted towards the newcomers, rubbing the back of his neck with a single gloved hand.Ā "My name's Link." He smirked softly, however it was more welcoming than anything.

āOf course! It would be nice to have some company, anyways.ā He sang, with a soft smile of reassurance towards the other male. It did get rather lonely nowadays, seeing as he was doing most of his adventuring by himself now. It was a bit of a relief not to have someone constantly breathing down his neck and telling him what to do⦠but then again, he wasnāt used to quite so much independence. Maybe having a friend tag along once in a while wasnāt such a bad ideaā at least he would have someone to talk to.
āIāve never seen one like this beforeā¦ā He chirped, the excitement weaving through his tone as he pressed a palm lightly to the cool glass of the window. ā⦠Could we go in there..? He asked. But before he knew it and without an answer from the other, he found his curiosity getting the better of him, as it usually did. Moving away from the window, he neared the door which lead to the small courtyard, and carefully began to push it open.Ā
As he stepped through the door, Linkās eyes widened in awe. Upon his many adventures, it was only natural that he would come across fields of unique flowers and blossoms, but he couldnāt recall seeing so much life, and vibrant colors all at the same time. It was beautiful⦠with a wider variety ofĀ differentĀ plant species that he wouldnāt ever be able to keep track of. āThis is amazingā¦ā He murmured, taking a few steps deeper into the garden as icy blue orbs lit up with interest, before he slowly turned over his shoulder to glance back at the other.Ā
āHow exactly do you go about your quests?ā If funding was needed, Marth was more than willing to pay for both of them to a certain extent. He wasnāt sure how to go about it though. How was he going to run the kingdom while out and about, possibly in a completely different world? He would need to find a different person to run everything, someone he could trust not to cause complete mayhem or hand over the kingdom. Currently, he couldnāt think of anyone though. The very thought of the work that would have to be put into that made him sigh quietly.
He jumped a little, coming back to attention as the other spoke and wiping his eyes once more, so his expression was basically the same as before, smile and all. Before he could even begin to think about replying, the other had run off though leaving Marth with his mouth open and about to speak with his bright hues closed. A slightly annoyed grumble left him, taking off as soon as he could. However, the agitation quickly changed to amusement, and he actually chuckled to himself.
Marth followed after the other quickly, needing to keep an eye him to be sure everything would be alright. Visitors had to be approved by him or the guards would throw him out, so it needed to be blatantly obvious until someone saw them that the other male was his guest. The idea of going into the flower gardens was not necessarily something that appealed to him, clearly by the tear that dripped off as he left the scene, and he had to look the other way when he entered the court yard to keep from growing anymore emotional. It was bad enough to be crying to himself after this much time let alone creating a scene for his friend.
As he heard the other speak, he couldnāt help it though. All of this was so much for him, and he couldnāt help but think of how much grander it could have been. Wyverns had trampled it in places. There were still dead spots from the attack where his father had been killed and sister was taken. The air smelled slightly of wet pegasus, which being so close to one of the stables didnāt help in the slightest. The opposing courtyard was much nicer than this one, in his opinion. That was probably because of the things that plagued his mindĀ while around here though. He even had his servants care for it instead of him.
His bright blue eyes dared to move over toward the colorful flowers only to grow a slight pink, cheeks soon matching soon after as his hands clenched tightly into a fist to calm himself. It didnāt work though, and his face was soon stained by tears dripping down his cheeks. āT-t-they are⦠quite nice,ā he muttered before his breath suddenly caught in his throat, unable to say anything else and even that had come out weak sounding. His whole being felt weak, and he just couldnāt do anything about it.
Suddenly, the blue-haired male dropped, sinking to his knees among the flowers and arms limp by his sides. The salty, clear liquid fell only to be soaked up by the soil, trying to hide as best he could by covering his face with his hands. He felt so pathetic, as if all of his pride as a king was stripped from him from a simple flower garden. A small, whimpering noise left him as he finally took a breath, but it was muffled by his gloves luckily, making it inaudible for the most part. However, it didnāt really help and in fact made him feel even worse about himself for losing his calm.
He hated backtracking like this. It was like reliving the moments where those important to him were swiped once more. For so long, he had blocked it out, having thought he had gotten used to it, but he now realized that wasnāt the case and was completely ashamed of it. People had been there for him, but all he had done was blame himself and put it off. Still, he shouldnāt have let Shiida take up arms with him. They were supposed to be together, and that was taken so easily. Now he had new friends though, and it made him see the same fate in them as well.
The king cared for his friend like he wouldnāt believe, unable to think of him being taken as his former fiancee had been. Even if he swore he would never let it happen again, he didnāt believe himself. How could he when more and more threats kept pouring in. He had accepted that not everything was within his power, but he was more than willing to give himself to help them. Sure he had been back then as well, but he had never thought about doing so, giving him hesitation to react and making him too late. This time would be different.
Biting his lower lip and tugging on his hair, he peered through his parted fingers to be sure that there were no eyes on them or figures around in general. At least they were alone. He didnāt need anyone seeing him like this, especially one of his people. He knew his friend could keep his mouth shut at least though. It would be difficult to deal with the story of the direct descendant of Anri sobbing in his garden as if he had lost his mind. A weak king was what he would come across as, and that was the one thing any nation should fear. It meant treats coming to their borders to take advantage, a crushed economy and loss of control.
With a shake of his head, Marth turned on his knees so his back faced the other male, hiding how he felt by bending forward and looking as if he was caring for a flower. However, as his hand pulled away, his occasional sniffling and whimpering grew louder, making it nearly impossible to hide that he was up to something. He did not want Link to feel as if he had said or done something wrong though, so out of courtesy, the male was tempted to go up to his room and get his mask just to even better hide himself for even he was painfully aware of how obvious this was.
He cleared his throat, trying to find something he could possibly say. Words seemed like a foreign thing though, and at first they came out more as mumbled nonsense, unable to be mistaken for any language really. When they actually did leave him correctly, he wasnāt able to think of what to say anymore though, and his voice shook as a simple āuhā left him. What was he doing? He was a king. Dealing with hardships was part of the package he had been forced to receive. He felt as if what he should have done, what his father would have done, was get to his feet and walk off with a beckoning motion, but he just couldnāt.
"For the most part, trying to keep myself alive." An insecure chuckle escaped through his words as he reached up to rub the back of his neck uncomfortably. In all honesty, he wouldn't have been able to explain his own habits to his friend, for the reason being that he himself didn't know.
