au where james and regulus have been dating since high school. their relationship started to get rocky during their law (james) and med (reg) school years. one night, during one of their most heated arguments, james decided to take a break and leave for a while, where he ended up in a car accident that left him unconscious for three days. when he finally woke up, he had no recollection of anything. overwhelmed by guilt, regulus asked their friends and family to refrain from reminding james of their relationship.

regulus packed everything that could remind james of their relationship and moved out of their home. he focused on graduating from med school and kept a distance from james. then during his first year of residency, james was rushed to the emergency room by his boyfriend to the hospital where regulus was working.

regulus was attending to another patient when he heard james’ boyfriend screaming for help. as he tended to james, who suddenly felt a sense of familiarity and asked regulus if they had met before. regulus quickly denied it and handed him over to an intern.

ever since that encounter, james has been unable to get a certain doctor out of his mind. he has made it his mission to learn more about him and uncover if regulus is one of the things he had forgotten in the past…. that’s when he stumbled upon an old polaroid photo of them beaming at each other, with regulus showing off his engagement ring.

“What d’you think?” James asked nervously, waving his hands around to indicate his need for approval of the shoebox-sized flat they were currently standing in.

Regulus, who was having a hard time not falling to the ground and having a complete panic attack, nodded tightly. “It’s nice,” he murmured, too busy lost in his own thoughts to pay much attention to his surroundings.

It’d all happened so fast: James graduating from Hogwarts, the summer sliding through his fingers like water through a sieve. And now, they were here, looking at a flat for James whilst Regulus prepared for his final year of school.

Regulus wanted to scream at time to stop. Why was it that when he finally felt happy, things decided to happen at lightning speed?

James looked at him with a frown. “I’ll keep looking,” he muttered decisively, turning to leave.

It was the older boy’s sadness that jolted Regulus from his panic. “Wait–no!” he sighed, turning to his boyfriend. “It’s–it’s nice, James. I’m just…all of this just reminds me that you’re going to be here, and I’m going to be there. I–” he took a shuddering breath, the fears he’d been keeping at bay tumbling out of his mouth like they’d been begging to be freed. “You’re moving on. Getting your own flat! Who’s to say you won’t find someone else, decide you want other things, while I’m trapped in bloody Sco–”

James’s favorite way to interrupt him had always been with a kiss.

“Baby,” he murmured reverently, making Regulus shiver, “That will never happen. But you realize–this will be our flat, our home! Your name will be on the lease!”

This made Regulus stare. “I–what?”

James stared, looking shocked. “Why d’you think I’ve been dragging you around in this search?” he demanded. “Of course you–well, shit, only if you want t–”

Regulus’s favorite way to interrupt him had always been with a kiss, as well.

“Oi, Prongs? Can I borrow your light-blue sweater?” Sirius asked loudly, sticking his head out of his room and into the hall of the flat he shared with his best friend. “I’ve got lunch with my brother and I want to look put-together!”

Almost instantaneously, a head of messy hair popped out of the room one door down. “Nah, mate,” James replied, grimacing. “I’m so bloody mad. Remember that night I stayed over a bloke’s house?”

“Yeah,” Sirius beamed, proud of James for finally getting laid after dealing with a devastating break-up. “Ickle Jamie grew up and got gay like the rest of us. Why?”

“I think I left it at his place. M’still trying to get the nerve to text him to get it back…and to see him again,” the taller man replied, blushing a bit as he spoke.

“Mate, you haven’t stopped talking about him for days. Grow a pair and text him. For my sake and yours,” Sirius replied, snorting.

James rolled his eyes and flipped him a finger. “I’m working up to it.”

“Work up to it faster. Moony and I want to double date,” Sirius grinned, but James just threw a questionable sock at him.

An hour later, Sirius arrived at the restaurant where he was going to meet Regulus. As usual, he was a fashionable twenty minutes late, so he could see his brother through the window when he arrived.

And when he did, he nearly screamed.

Pulling out his phone, he immediately called a familiar number.

“Potter!” he barked as soon as James answered. “I found your bloody sweater!”

“Wh…what? How?” James replied, sounding genuinely thankful that Sirius had done so.

“Your hookup? What was his name?” Sirius growled, clenching his fist and already trying to decide what way of murder was best.

“Er…never caught it, to be honest. He’s saved in my phone as ‘angel.’ But why…?”

Sirius stared into the restaurant window, where his brother was wearing an oversized light-blue sweater. “Did he happen to look a little like me?” he snarled.

James’s gasp of realization was clear even over the phone.

“Ah, look. There’s your boyfriend,” Barty hissed to Regulus, choosing to speak in French rather than English so nobody else understood.

Regulus, who was eating his breakfast and trying to mind his own business, shot his best friend a glare. “The fuck’re you on about?” He responded in English.

“Your boyfriend,” Barty repeated, smirking at him and jerking his chin toward a group of people standing close by. “Don’t act like you don’t want to snog him senseless, I know you too well.”

Regulus narrowed his eyes. “Know me well enough to know when I’m about to commit murder?” he hissed back in French, flipping his friend a finger.

But Barty just chuckled. “He’s looking this way, Reggie. Fix your hair.”

Without thinking, Regulus moved his hand to his head, then scowled when Barty cackled. “My embarrassingly romantic feelings about Potter are none of your damn business. Or should we start talking about you and Evan?”

This, it seemed, was enough to shut Barty up. Or maybe it was the fact that James Potter was heading their way. Both boys busied themselves with their forks, only to look up again when James stopped right in front of them.

“Erm, hi. Crouch. Reggie,” the older boy grinned, making Regulus’s face feel warm. “I…thought you should know. Sirius is teaching me French.”

Both Regulus and Barty’s mouth popped open, and Regulus could feel himself going bright red.

James, however, kept right on smiling. Leaning down close to Regulus, he whispered in slightly-fragmented French: “I want to snog you, too, by the way.”

Then he stood and walked away, grinning wildly, leaving Regulus and Barty both gaping at him.

Rewatching stranger things and my spicy ass take is that Mike and Eleven are actually in a very healthy, loving relationship while they grapple with and develop their respective identities as TEENAGERS. I have not wavered from my previous opinion of them and continue to be a Mileven shipper. Yes, they absolutely are a little codependent because they are YOUNG and their emotions are strong but what is labelled as "toxicity" is incredibly tame for what we normally digest from romantic relationships in popular media. Also, their romance is so incredibly central to the narrative that there is absolutely no way it could be destroyed in the last season.
