the cycle of life
My teacup broke soโI guess lll have to go to an antique shopโฆ damn you god! *looks up antique stores immediately.*
hi do you have any book recommendations on russian folklore or mythology - possibly ones with illustrations? thank you :-)
Hi! I guess you prefer English soโฆ Honestly, I have not read any books about Russian/Slavic folklore in English, and itโs not easy (for me at least) to recommend that kind of book, but Iโll try my best :)
1) โHeroes, monsters, and other worlds from Russian mythologyโby Elizabeth Warner. A good illustrated book with fairy tales and with information about characters of these tales. Also there is some historical information.Itโs a good book for a beginner. I have the book but I just keep it because of the lovely illustrations. I didnโt read, just looked through it. :D
2) โThe Worlds of Russian Village Women: Tradition, Transgression,Compromiseโ by Laura J. Olson and Svetlana Adonyeva. The book was published in bothlanguages, and itโs about three generations of Russian women and their life in the 20century. There are traditions, songs, magical rituals and superstitions of the Russian village. The book is lack of the illustrations, but I highly recommendyou to read it. Iโm reading the book right now, and itโs very interesting.
3) โIvan the Fool: Russian Folk Belief: A Cultural History.โ by Andrei Sinyavsky. About tales, spirits, folk Christianity, religious sects and so on. Without any illustrations :)
4) โThe Songs of the Russian People, as Illustrative of Slavonic Mythology and Russian Social Lifeโ and โSongs of the Russian Peopleโ by William Ralston. Translated russian folk songs and romances with commentaries. No illustrations :D
5) Also I heard that the books and research of Linda J. Ivanitsare good but I never read her. Try โRussian Folk Beliefโ, for example.
6) โMorphology of the Folktaleโ by Vladimir Propp. This manual is not about mythology or folklore but the structures of the russian tales. And if you want to know how tales (any tales not just russian or slavic) are created, this book is for you. But be careful the text is too academic (well, itโs too academic in Russian, I guess this is also true for English version). The book without illustrations.
What do you mean by โtoo academicโ?
Maybe I used not right words, but I mean Morphology isnโt nonfiction book. Propp analyzes the tale. He didnโt try to attract people with beautiful words, didnโt entertain the reader with funny stories or easy language. I believe some of readers may get bored with this book.ย I fell asleep a couple of times while reading this book :)
Sometimes it looks like this:
Schemes and charts.
Imagine sitting in your mini library with your lover. Your favorite book in one hand and a cup of tea or coffee in the other. You stare out the window to see the beautiful sun slowly starting to set. You look the other way and see your lover sitting on the couch, emerged into a book in a way youโve never seen them do before. Theyโre amazed by how many good works there actually are. Itโs adorable. You smile, knowing that your love for literature or them, will never disappear. Oh to be in love.
dark academia but in 2020 and gen z
- staying up late in the dark reading wikipedia articles on obscure topics on your phone
- researching random things that caught your interest instead of paying attention to your zoom classes/ doing homework
- reading during zoom classes
- checking daily if your local library reopened
- notes app poetry at 4 am
- reading by candlelight at night just because lamps are too bright and you might get caught by your parents
- waking up early to watch the sunrise before online school
- developing a coffee addiction over quarantine
- wearing dramatic coats and button ups etc to just go to the supermarket

the misty blanket of fog that hangs low in the sky and veils the tops of the buildings
a street-corner singer, crooning softly and strumming their guitar with calloused fingers
a hidden coffee shop, tucked away in a tiny alley
scoping out the best second-hand book store
waiting for the subway at midnight whilst listening to soft jazz
a sea of umbrellas all moving as one as their owners hurry toward their destinations
reading from a rooftop terrace, feeling like youโre simply floating above the world
riding the bus in the rain, passing the time by thumbing through a well-worn anthology of romantic era poetry
researching the history of the city, and making it a goal to find the still-standing historical landmarks

๐ Connect with the spirits of the dead through meditation or rituals.
๐ธ Watch your favorite spooky/witchy movies to awaken Samhain's energy.
๐ Pull some tarot cards for guidance.
๐ธ๏ธ Take a walk in nature for grounding, clear your mind, and appreciate the beauty of autumn.
๐ Since Samhain is also a fire festival, connect with the element of fire by lighting candles or a small bonfire (always safely).
๐ธ๏ธ Craft yourself a Samhain mask, inspired by ancient Egyptian funeral masks, which were believed to protect the soul on its journey. By creating your own โdeath mask,โ you symbolically protect yourself when the veil is thin.
๐ Celebrate Samhain also as Nutcrack Night, by enjoying the seasonโs nuts, you can crack them open to release their energy and use them for their magical properties, whether by eating them or using them in spells.
๐ธ๏ธ Practice candle and fire magick.
๐ Try scrying or mirror gazing, divination is especially powerful when the veil is thin (this whole month especially, and in November too).
๐ธ๏ธ Do a simple releasing spell: take a leaf, focus on something you want to let go of, crush it gently, and then release it into nature.
๐ Host a Samhain feast for your loved ones. Leave an empty place at the table with food and a photo of the deceased, inviting their spirit to join you.
๐ธ๏ธ Do some trick-or-treating with baked cookies or small crystals to share your energy with others.
๐ Try an apple peel divination: peel an apple in one long, continuous spiral and throw it over your shoulder. The shape it forms is said to reveal the first initial of your future love.
๐ธ๏ธ Offer wine libations or food offerings outdoors (make sure theyโre safe for animals).
๐ Visit a cemetery or the grave of a loved one. Leave flowers or other offerings to honor them.
๐ธ๏ธ Add photos of your ancestors or deceased loved ones to your altar.
๐ Wear black to honor the Sabbat and the departed.
๐ธ๏ธ Bake Samhain treats (like soul cakes, barmbrack, Colcannon, or pies) with your desired intentions and positive energy.
๐ Harvest the last fruits and vegetables of the season.
๐ธ๏ธ Dance and celebrate both life and death.
๐ Invoke and honor deities associated with this sabbath, such as Hades, Hekate, Morrigan, Persephone, Anubis, and more.
๐ธ๏ธ Use divination tools like pendulums, dice, or tarot cards to communicate with spirits or seek guidance.
๐ Collect acorns, chestnuts, or hazelnuts and keep them until Ostara. Care for them and charge them with your energy, then return them to nature in spring as an offering.
๐ธ๏ธ Collect animal bones or feathers to honor the natural cycle of life and death.
๐ Play apple bobbing (traditionally done to honor the goddess Pomona). Successfully catching an apple symbolized a successful future relationship. You can place your caught apple under your pillow to dream of your future partner.
๐ธ๏ธ Try reading in tea leaves.
๐ Carve pumpkins with sigils, runes, or symbols you want to attract into your life.
๐ธ๏ธ Bake a pumpkin or apple pie and carve a sigil on top.
๐ Focus on healing and transformation spells.
๐ธ๏ธ Wear Samhain colors in your clothing, makeup, or nails (orange, purple, white, black, brown, and gold).
๐ Set up your altar with Samhain or autumn symbols.
๐ธ๏ธ Use crow feathers or crow motifs to honor death and transformation.
๐ Carve symbols onto candles and anoint them with essential oils and herbs.
๐ธ๏ธ Visualize your intentions and desires clearly, and ask your deities or ancestors for help, but remember, they guide you, they donโt do all the work for you.
๐ Try a dumb supper, eating in silence to connect with spirits and ancestors.
๐ธ๏ธ Connect with crystals associated with Samhain (hematite, obsidian, black tourmaline, bloodstone, smoky quartz).
๐ Decorate your home with Halloween or Samhain-themed decor to welcome the energy of the season.
๐ธ๏ธ Prepare a dinner and leave offerings for your dead loved ones.
๐ For many pagans, Samhain marks the Witchesโ New Year, so channel your energy into spells for new beginnings, healing, transformation, and manifestation, and honor deities connected with witchcraft.
๐ธ๏ธ And last but not least, donโt forget to have fun and, most importantly, celebrate every sabbath in the way that feels right to you and connects you deeply with your own magic. Blessed Samhain!!! ๐โก๐ท
while it can be scary to know the veil is thin, this is a perfect time to connect with ancestors and those whoโve passed for guidance! remember you are protected, what you do not allow in cannot hurt you <3
Organised chaos.
Howww do you make your obsidian so aesthetic? ๐ I couldn't figure out how to do something other than the default page layouts ๐
thankyou so much <3 i don't know if there is anything specific you are asking about, but in the picture i'm using:
theme is gruvbox
https://github.com/CyanVoxel/Obsidian-Colored-Sidebar for the colored folders
calendar plugin for the calendar
i make drawings by hand, remove the background with photoshop/gimp and use modular css to get two columns https://github.com/efemkay/obsidian-modular-css-layout
also, i personally love the spaced repetition plugin
if you are looking for inspiration, then the obsidian discord community is a great place to look at people's layouts and ideas
good luck and feel free to ask more questions!!!
